FEBRUARY 14-18 DOWNTOWN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE MUSIC CITY CENTER Bold and straightforward. A promise of something truly great. The rustic woodblock show posters of the old American South share more than a few attributes with the TMS 2016 Annual Meeting & Exhibition (TMS2016). Opening February 14 in Nashville, Tennessee, TMS2016 will deliver its own memorable lineup of headliner events at the Music City Center. In recognition of TMS2016’s storied location, the following pages have adopted the show poster look so closely associated with Nashville’s musical legacy to present just a few meeting highlights and dates to remember. (When attending TMS2016, stop by Hatch Show Print, located near Music City Center, to see how these posters are still made using traditional letterpress techniques.) What no TMS annual meeting preview can convey is the tremendous enthusiasm and pride generated by the many volunteers who have developed TMS2016’s more than 380 technical sessions. Excitement continues to build around the expanded presence of additive manufacturing topics. Real or Perceived? Light Metals Keynote Examines Constraints on Innovation

Margaret Hyland intends to inspire questions among those who attend the TMS2016 Light Metals Keynote. “The general theme is pushing the boundaries in innovative thinking,” said Hyland, deputy dean of engineering, University of Auckland, and lead organizer of the session. “The keynote organizers want to inspire the TMS light metals community to think about how we can make positive changes in our businesses and our technologies, within what is usually described as a very mature industry.” Hyland said that the session will include speakers from both up- and downstream aluminum processing who have successfully broken barriers to their own innovations. “I hope these presentations will prompt attendees to question whether those factors that we generally consider to be constraints on the way we operate actually are constraints,” she said. Check the TMS2016 website at www.tms .org/TMS2016 for updates on all light metals programming, including technical sessions, invited speakers, and networking events.

Contribute to the Conversation on Diversity and Inclusion

Transforming the Diversity Landscape, a special symposium sponsored by the TMS Education Committee, will continue the dialogue that was opened at the Diversity in the Minerals, Metals and Materials Professions summit sponsored by TMS in 2014. Natalie Larson, symposium organizer and graduate student at the University of California, had attended the summit with her classmates and co-organizers,Wennie Wang and David Hwang. “The summit inspired us to continue the efforts started there by organizing a symposium that would be available to the broader audience at TMS2016,” she said. “Our hope is that symposium participants

and impact of diversity in science and engineering, along with concrete action items to create an inclusive and innovative professional culture.” In addition to invited speakers, the symposium will feature a panel discussion of TMS past presidents on diversity and inclusion issues, from their perspectives as leaders within their organizations and of TMS. Other opportunities offered at TMS2016 to learn and engage on this important topic include the Women in Science Breakfast on Monday, February 15. Participation in the TMS Diversity Committee, which will meet during TMS2016, is also open to all TMS members.
