January is the mating ritual o the great horned

owl. Afer mating, the owls will continue tohoot into February, not so much to proclaimtheir love and affection but to stake out aterritory and warn other owls away. So the great horned owl mates and beginsnesting in the dead o winter. Must be crazy, right? Maybe. Or maybe no other birds are assmart as the wise old owl. Actually, its neither wisdom nor crazinessthat drives the great horned owl to nest so early.Rather its just that it takes so darn long to raisea young owl. First, the emale owl takes two to threedays to lay on average two eggs, then she sits onthem (incubation) or 30-35 days. Afer hatching, the young birds will

remain in the nest or close to two monthsbeore their first flight, called fledging. Tat canbe mid- to late-May, sometimes even later. Aferward, the young have to be taughtand practice to hunt at night, neither a shortnor simple task. It can take as long as sixmonths afer hatching were into Septembernow beore the young have ully acquiredtheir first winter plumage and are good fliersand hunters. Because owls are mostly nocturnal andsilent on the wing, we dont see them much andthereore weve come up with all sorts o myths. Folklore has bestowed owls with wisdom

and magic, or sometimes they symbolize deathand messengers to the aferlie. Reality is more

exciting. Although much o the great horned owlsactivities take place rom sunset to sun up,sunlight does not blind them. Tey have keenvision day or night. Teir eyes are designed or maximumsensitivity rather than resolution. Tat meansthey can see very well at low light levels but notvery crisply. So they use their eyesight mostlyto avoid obstacles, locating prey with their ears.Teir eyesight is good, their hearing superb. Like all Montana owls, the great hornedversion has a acial disc that unnels sounds toear openings covered by eathers on the sideo its head. Tose inconspicuous ear openingsare lopsided (asymmetrical) not like ours. Tatallows them to triangulate sounds and finda mouse scurrying under several inches osnow in the dark o night.Remarkable. Tose tufs o eathers atop their head?Tey are not ears and have nothing to do withhearing. But their purpose is a bit o a mystery. Some think the tufs help camouflage the birdagainst a tree. Others say the tufs help withcommunication or recognition. Like maybeone bird signaling to its mate on a wintersnight. So this Valentines Day think o greathorned owls amorous in the dead o winterand the dark o night.
