his column was due the day of the “Monday Night Football” game between theMinnesota Vikings and the Chicago Bears, December 20, so I don’t know howthe attempt to ready the University of Minnesota’s TCF Bank Stadium for thatcontest turned out. But my money’s on Mike McDonald, CSFM, the Golden

Gophers’ turf manager, Steve Berg, grounds superintendent for the St. Paul Academy andSummit School and president of the Minnesota STMA chapter, and the sports turf managersof the North Star State successfully completing the task.

Prepping the stadium is more than just clearing snow from the seats and the playing sur-face, by the way. McDonald and Company had already “winterized” the stadium, meaningthe water had been shut off and drained, the toilets disassembled, etc. I have asked MSTMAExecutive Secretary Jeff Turtinen to report on the whole process when it’s over but I’m surehe’s been busting his butt just like everyone else so if we don’t get a first-hand report it’s un-derstandable.

Of course whether the field will be safe isn’t up to them—the choice to play it in Min-nesota is the NFL’s (with a BIG push from ESPN, which certainly thinks they’ll get a largeraudience for a telecast in this setting rather than an antiseptic indoor stadium in a neutralcity). The playing surface could well be frozen; in fact Vikings punter Chris Kluwe tweeted(see p. 28) after a team walk-through the day before the game, “Serious time - All respect tothe people that cleared the field and got it ready, you did an amazing job. That being said, it’sunplayable. The field is as hard as concrete an hour and a half after they took the tarp off, andanyone that hits their head is getting a concussion.”

We’ll all know how it turned out by the time you read this, and after some of the wackyoccurrences in NFL games yesterday (Dec. 19), like the Eagles beating the Giants on a “walk-off ” punt return or that Patriots lineman who rumbled for a record 71 yards with a kickoff,something extraordinary is bound to happen. Let’s hope it wasn’t a bunch of concussions.

This doesn’t happen every dayRPR turfgrass was recently re-categorized as a subspecies within perennial ryegrass. Al-

though RPR is still recognized as a perennial ryegrass species, it has been clearly recognized asa different type of perennial ryegrass, and has been identified as belonging to the category ofLolium perenne subsp. Stoloniferum, a regenerating perennial ryegrass. First cited in 1836 (!),no varieties have been recognized as a Lolium perenne stoloniferum since (regular perennial rye-grass is called Lolium perenne).

In 1836 a Dr. Lawson described a class of regenerating perennial ryegrass as Lolium peren-nevar. stoloniferum. Since then nothing has been bred or identified in this class of perennialryegrass. Barenbrug USA launched the RPR program after more than 10 years of breedingand is the only company to have its varieties listed as Lolium perenne subsp. Stoloniferum. Dr.Joseph Wipff, breeder of the RPR varieties said, “I am very happy with this recognition as itclearly shows the difference between RPR and other regular perennial ryegrasses.”

want to thank you, the members, for making STMA a priority in your professionallife. It has been one fast and exciting year. Where other professional associations havestruggled, the STMA continues to provide exceptional services and sound educationalresources to its members—all while engaging in new initiatives. Some of these initia-

tives are the under-design website redevelopment, image enhancement, and international out-reach. Other areas of focus include improved member services and recruitment, and theenvironment. The STMA’s philosophies, strategic plan, and current and past leadership ofboards, committees and headquarters have led to a vibrant forecast for STMA’s future.

I want to thank our commercial partners who have been a constant source of support toSTMA. Through their generosity, STMA has enhanced its programs to its members. TheBoard and I truly appreciate your commitment through yet another difficult year.

Second, a sincere thank you to all committees and task groups for giving your time and tal-ents to STMA. The participation of these volunteers is critical to our success. Their workshows a true commitment to advancing the profession.

I would like to recognize and thank your Board of Directors. Throughout this year theyhave worked diligently to provide the best value to our members as we traverse these unprece-dented economic times. The Board has worked towards the future by planning for it. Mygoal a year ago was to “drive for a financially stable organization that values its membershipand continues to contribute to them.” I believe STMA is accomplishing this.

I would be remiss if I did not say a huge thank you to headquarters staff and our CEOKim Heck. Kim and her staff are a unified team and provide the most exemplary customerservice I have experienced. Their responsiveness enables STMA members to concentrate onwhat we do best: provide safe, beautiful, and efficiently managed sports turf venues for ourclientele.

As the presidential baton is passed to Troy Smith, CSFM, I extend my best wishes to himand the board. They are well prepared and equipped to manage through any future chal-lenges. Past member surveys indicate two things that members value most from STMA: net-working and mentoring. I have truly experienced this myself, and I have many of you tothank personally for your judgment, knowledge and guidance through my years.

As we lock our offices and close our maintenance shop garage doors, we often are too busywith the happenings of the day or overlook the impact we have on the lives of so many ath-letes and families. The “human” aspect of belonging and being part of a team is universal. Inall of us is a desire to succeed and win. It is rewarding to see this reaction in every youngsterthat finishes a season and is handed an award. Our facilities and fields truly capture this kindof excitement as a memorable life experience. I am profoundly proud to have served this asso-ciation and hope that all of us never lose sight of capturing and reliving those moments onour fields.

How do you feel that you influence otherindustry professionals?

Getz: I really enjoy all aspects of thegreen industry and have been an arborist, agrounds manager and a sports turf managerbut my true passion is sports turf manage-ment. I really think it’s the passion I havethat allows me to help others in the industry.I’m blessed to have a job that allows me totravel to many different venues and pick upideas that I can then pass to others.

What do you feel has been your biggest

contribution to the green industry so far?And what do you see as your role in the fu-ture of the industry?

Getz: I feel my biggest contribution wasto be the chairperson of the certificationcommittee of the Sports Turf Managers Asso-ciation. As a committee, we strongly felt thatfor the STMA to move forward in terms ofrecognition from peer organizations, the in-dustry and the public we needed a way tocertify competence as a sports turf manager.That dream came true after 3 years of plan-ning with our first Certified Sports FieldManager, Ross Kurcab of the Denver Bron-cos in January 2000. I hope my role in thefuture will be to continue to help whenneeded. I enjoy working on committees andprojects as needs arise.

Who has influenced you both personallyand professionally?

Getz: Probably the most influential per-

son both personally and professionally was afriend’s father who was the consummate ecol-ogist and strong believer in protecting theenvironment and sustainability long before itwas the “in” thing to do. His knowledge ofour natural world inspired me to embark ona career in the green industry.

Tell us something about yourself outsideof work (hobby, sport or other personal inter-est) that influences your approach in yourprofessional career.

Getz: One of my favorite hobbies iswoodworking and while I’m not a NormAbrams by any stretch of the imagination,woodworking, through the years, has taughtme patience and attention to detail.

What dreams do you have for the indus-try? What change(s) are necessary to makethose dreams a reality?

Getz: My dream is that sports turf man-agers, groundskeepers and other green indus-

try professionals are duly recognized for theprofessionals they are. We have come a longway in establishing professionalism but westill have a long way to go. There is a big jobahead of us to educate the public on the com-plexity of green industry ecosystems and thatmanaging these ecosystems properly will havea positive impact on our environment interms of water usage, pollution abatementand carbon sequestration.

What advice do you have for green indus-try professionals who want to become influ-ential leaders themselves?

Getz: Do everything you do with pas-sion. Question the status quo, challenge oldideas with new ones and always be a leader.

Who has influenced you both personallyand professionally?

Rossi: I have been influenced by themany giving educators and professionals Ihave met over the years. Among the many areprofessors such as Bob Emmons from SUNYCobleskill, the late Dick Skogley from theUniversity of Rhode Island, Art Gold fromURI, and turf managers such as Fritz Mc-Mullen and Monroe Miller in Michigan,Kevin Trotta in New York, Dan Dinelli inIllinois, as well as professors Paul Rieke,Bruce Branham and Joe Vargas at MichiganState.

Tell us something about yourself outsideof work (hobby, sport or other personal inter-est) that influences your approach in yourprofessional career.

Rossi: I am entering my 5th season as atriathlete, primarily doing the Olympic dis-tance but hope to move up to the half iron-man in a few years. I am on our local schoolboard, coach my son’s Little League team, mywife and I raise alpacas but by far my favoritething is raising my three kids.

What dreams do you have for the indus-try? What change(s) are necessary to makethose dreams a reality?

Rossi: My dream is that we will embracesustainability in meaningful way and work to

more closely match our management withthe needs of society. I believe with issues likethe sustainable sites initiative we may nolonger be able to provide energy intensivemaintenance for turf areas without a clearidea of the function of the site and to be hon-est about what is for looks and what reallyprovide environmental benefits.

What advice do you have for green indus-try professionals who want to become influ-ential leaders themselves?

Rossi: The best way to lead is to be com-mitted to being a lifelong learner. The mostimportant quality of any leader is resiliencyand of course to have a solid technical under-standing.

How do you feel that you influence otherindustry professionals?

Schattinger: Fortunately, I have a greatteam that is committed to making productsthat are healthier for the community, betterperforming and competitively priced. Wehave worked with the EPA’s “Design for theEnvironment” (www.epa.gov/dfe) program tocreate aggressive environmental goals for ourindustry. We work closely with our suppliersto develop a healthier, higher performingstandard for the ingredients in our athleticfield paints.

Five years ago, I was told that a zero-VOC, affordable, high performance grasspaint was not possible. By focusing the effortsof our research team, our suppliers and someselect customers, we have been able to intro-duce four different white paints that meetthese targets. Our research team has under-taken a 4-year program to redefine how thepigments that we use in our industry aremade. Together with the “Design for the En-vironment” program and our suppliers, wehave looked at every input, every energysource, every waste product at each stage ofproduction to make sure that the end result isa better and healthier product for our cus-tomers and our communities.

What do you feel has been your biggest

contribution to the green industry so far?And what do you see as your role in the fu-ture of the industry?

Schattinger: A lot of what we havebeen able to accomplish is to show that prod-ucts can be better for the environment, betterperforming and competitively priced. Byworking with the “Design for the Environ-ment” program, we are constantly beingstretched to raise the bar of expectations forboth performance and environmental profilenot just for ourselves, but for the industry.We will continue to invest in new technolo-gies and in new ways of using older technolo-gies to provide new and better options, tohelp our customers provide better perform-ing, better looking and healthier playing sur-faces. We will continue to push our suppliersand partners to provide alternatives that arehealthier, higher performing and affordable.

Who has influenced you both personallyand professionally?

Schattinger: In our industry, there arepeople who have passion about their fields,their communities and their education andknowledge. With limited resources and help,they are able to accomplish extraordinarythings. These are the people that influenceme the most. These are the people who moti-vate me when we run into roadblocks andseemingly insurmountable obstacles.

Tell us something about yourself outsideof work (hobby, sport or other personal inter-est) that influences your approach in yourprofessional career.

Schattinger: My wife and I enjoy thesport of curling. Curling is a sport that re-quires a lot of strategy and balance. The easyshot is often not the best shot. You need toplan ahead. You need to be prepared with al-ternatives in case your competitor throws agame changing shot. It’s important in curlingand in business to think about what yourplan for the future is, how you want to getthere, and what the consequences for yourdecisions may be.

What dreams do you have for the indus-try? What change(s) are necessary to makethose dreams a reality?

Schattinger: I dream of an industry thatconsistently values the expertise of well trained,well educated turf managers. Too many times,turf managers are forced to use products, serv-ices and maintenance programs that provideshort-term savings but poor life-cycle value. Intoo many cases, facilities are willing to invest
