FEARFUL COURAGEI know fear. Low-grade or full-blown anxiety. Fretful worry. Recently I cleared out a stash of papers from 2006, the year my wife Caryl was on dialysis. Reviewing the list of multiple doctor visits, hospitalizations, and medications surfaced intense feelings deeply buried in my psyche. The fear, the anxiety became my unwelcome companions again for a while.

William Cowper, a well-known 18th century poet, knew fear as well. He periodically suffered several nervous breakdowns due to ravages of severe depression. One such episode led him to seek to drown himself in a river. Taking a horse-drawn carriage in Olney, England, the taxi driver surmised Cowper’s suicidal mindset and feigned getting lost in the fog. Cowper eventually fell asleep. Many hours later he was delivered back home.

Refreshed, he took his spared life as a gift, a sign from God. And that led to the writing of the hymn still sung today:

Ye fearful saints, fresh courage take, the clouds ye so much dreadAre big with mercy, and shall break in blessings on your head.

(from “God Moves in a Mysterious Way)

Similarly, Scripture is replete with this divine message: “Fear not.” More than 80 times we hear “Be not afraid.” Rabbi Jesus brings this assuring message from God’s lips:

Don't be afraid of missing out. You're my dearest friends. The Father wants to give you the very kingdom itself. (Luke 12:32, The Message)

Jesus is a clear-eyed realist, knowing that fear can serve us well in emergencies. Fear forces us to problem solve quickly, to consider what resources we have to survive danger. Subsequently, though, previous traumas we’ve experienced can, if unacknowl-edged, continue to revisit us often.

Ongoing fear cripples us. Projecting unknown possible catastrophes that rarely happen is energy depleting. Such fear robs us of the precious present. Fear kills our creative spirit full of gratitude for our blessings. Fear fades as we remember to embrace the full gifts of God’s grace and mercy in the scariest of places.

Mark Twain knew hardship and tragedy. His personal response was this jewel: “Courage is not the absence of fear…it is the ability to act in the presence of fear.”

Lord God, take my fears, those based on reality, those based on “what if” conjecture, and reshape my spirit around your words “fear not” into your deeply known assurance and presence. Remind me, Lord, again and again, to “be not afraid.” Amen.

Summer Internships:Ministry That Changes LivesBy Nicole Gates, Summer Intern, Central TexaseMy name is Nicole Gates and in 2016 I was given the incredible opportunity to intern for Lifeline Chaplaincy. I was placed in Austin, Texas, under the careful supervision of Tom Nuckels. I can admit now that I blindly accepted this internship, having no idea to what I was committing three months of my life. It soon became apparent to me that I had not signed up for acomfortable summer. Daily, I was asked to set aside my own “needs” so I could fully give my time, attention, and care to whoever lay in the hospital bed before me. I found that I was extremely uncomfortable with the idea that I would not know for sure that that person even wanted me to be there in the first place. One of my first experiences with this discomfort came when my co-intern and I were asked to shadow a chaplain on a visit to a neuro-rehabilitation center. We were visiting a man I’ll be calling James.

A few months earlier, James had been hit by a truck while he was crossing the street. The accident should have been fatal andeveryone was amazed that he had survived. Needless to say, James was not in good shape. Our first visit with him was incredibly awkward. He had a tube in his trachea and was unable to speak. He sat there with a grumpy look on his face, watching us through disgruntled eyebrows. I left the rehab center already dreading the next time James would pop up on our referral list. I just knew he didn’t want us there. I could feel it. But pop up on our list he did. We pushed through a second visit and then a third. Our third visit came to a close and I was feeling relieved as we stood to leave when James grabbed my hand and said “never stop coming!” I went out and cried in my car. That day, I thanked God for proving me wrong and I promised to let go of the idea that I knew what people needed from me. For the rest of the summer we made it a priority to visit James twice a week. By the end of my time in Austin we were dear friends. We cried with him on discouraging days and laughed with him on the days when he was up to cracking jokes. I looked back at the journal I was keeping at the time and I wrote this about our times with James, “We rarely had theological conversations with James but God moves when you simply show up.” James just needed us to be there. On our last visit he thanked us for showing him God and he said he couldn’t wait to go to church with his wife when he got out of the hospital. I’m so grateful for a God who allows us to be used, even when we are initially unwilling. The times shared in James’ hospital room are some of my most treasured.

On July 20th, 2017 “The Great American Tradition” was observed when the immortal words echoed though out the stadium, “Play Ball”. Yes, once again, it was time for the Lifeline Chaplaincy and Compassionate Touch annual benefit fundraising dinner at Dell Diamond in Round Rock, Texas. As in past years, the attendees enjoyed the silent auction and good ole ballpark food. Dr. Virgil Fry, Executive Director of Lifeline Chaplaincy, addressed the attendees and spoke of the 34-year history of Lifeline Chaplaincy. This year, as in years past, we recognized individuals and institutions that had excelled in areas of philanthropy, service and partnering with Lifeline Chaplaincy and Compassionate Touch. This year’s awards and recipients were:

Vance & Sarah Lynch Philanthropy AwardThe Yvonne H. Simard Foundation

Jay KasorekWillie Kosarek

Connie V. Kosarek

Lifeline Partners AwardHealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital

Bradley Dinsmore – CEO & Michael Randolph – Dir of Human Resources

Dan Bonner Outstanding Pastoral Care AwardAlbert & Vicki Dennington

I would like to thank everyone who sponsored tables, provided underwriting and attended the dinner and ballgame. This year was an outstanding success raising more money than in the previous 5 years. Your donations and volunteer service will allow Lifeline Chaplaincy and Compassionate Touch to bring God’s comforting words into hospital rooms to patients and their families and provide short term emergency financial support to those families who find themselves in a health crisis.

May God’s Blessings be on you all.

Holy Sedition

Scandals blossom across the headlines. Culture vies for the affection of humanity. Christians offer a holy sedition to competing claims, and none is more treasonous to secular culture, than prayer.

Lifeline Chaplaincy volunteers engage in this rebellion on a daily basis. Entering into a patient’s room during a health crisis, we engage the ultimate in Christ’s counter-culture. We pray.

Lest you think this is hyperbole, consider this statement from Paul. “For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the power of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:12).”

So, yes. Prayer is Holy Sedition. Christian prayer rejects easy solutions to the problem of suffering. We sit quietly and pray with our patients. We “…give to God what belongs to God..” (Mk. 12:17), and let the culture’s glib answers swirl outside the room.

Take Mary, who I visited recently. Two of her sons spent Thanksgiving in Texas prisons. One was guilty, she said, but the other unjustly accused. My heart quivered with pain and sorrow, having had a family member serve two years in prison.

Mary and I wept together and prayed. We prayed for “justice to roll down like waters” (Amos 5:24). We entreated the Lord for healing in Mary’s body, her spirit, her family, and in society at large.

We prayed for the kingdom to come…on earth as in heaven, and she was comforted by her faith in a God who frees the captive soul.

I Peter 2:19 reminds us that “…we are a royal priesthood, a chosen people, a holy nation…” We’re not the only ones to pray, but we can show you a powerful hospital, in which to pray. Please join us.

eSince the inception of Compassionate Touch, Inc. 20 years ago, our organization has thrived because of the compassion and support shown by people with caring hearts. Several months ago our city experienced a disaster associated with Hurricane Harvey. Many homes and livelihood were affected drastically. Through this tragic event, our city was able to overcome some of their adversities with the help of many thoughtful and concerned citizens.

Similar to the disaster experienced in our city recently, an unforeseen event as a serious illness of a loved one can drastically affect a family’s financial situation. Right now, we are receiving more than our normal daily caseload of patients’ requests for such needs as parking, lodging, food and various living expenses from social workers. Veterans affected by Hurricane Harvey have shared a large percentage of our funding. By the end of year 2017, we are projected to fund an estimate of over a quarter of a million dollars to support the urgent need of patients and families.

Recently we received a visit from Steven Penn, representative of St. Luke’s Foundation. The Founda-tion had received some gift cards from a Transplant Department in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and awarded the cards to Compassionate Touch. The gift cards will be used to help support transplant patients at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

A recipient states –Thank you for the gift card. We appreciate it very much. It will help us with transportation and parking expenses associated with our visits after transplant.

- R. Sorge & Family

Compassionate Touch is grateful for the outpouring of love that has been shown throughout this year by the generosity of foundations, corporations and individuals. It truly shows the essence of caring hearts at work for the good of mankind.

In an effort to make this the “best” family Thanksgiving Day ever, I brushed up on appropriate songs, passages, and quotes. Three times I was surprised and thrilled because things turned out much better – way better than what I anticipated with my plans and efforts.

Thirteen in our family gathered at the house of Kevin and Sarah Thompson, our son-in-law and daughter. While waiting in their den before supper Wednesday, Kevin asked, “Jesse, what is a good Thanksgiving Psalm I could read before we eat?” While I was thinking, Paige, our daughter-in-law, spoke up, “Psalm 136; it begins, ‘Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good. His love endures forever.’” Kevin read it while the family listened and recited, “His love endures forever.” twenty-six times after each verse. To myself I thought, Wow, that was good. Beginning the day before Thanksgiving with Bible readings relieves some of the pressure of doing too much of that sort of thing at the Thanksgiving Day meal.

Then Thanksgiving Day while the family circled the kitchen island filling their plates, Barbara, my wife, began the song, “Give Thanks With a Grateful Heart.” The whole kitchen swelled with praise to God as our family sang. I love the lines from that song, “And now let the weak say I am strong, let the poor say I am rich because of what the Lord has done for us!”

When we were all seated, had prayed, and were placing our napkins to begin eating, the highlight of highlights happened. Elizabeth, our six-year-old granddaughter, started singing, “Seek Ye First the Kingdom of God and His Righteousness.” We all joined in singing with Elizabeth! This brought smiles and joyful hearts to all of us around the table.

John’s Gospel says, “From the fullness of his grace we have all received one blessing after another.” (John 1:16) How truly blessed I felt this Thanksgiving -- beyond my plans and preparations. Some call this, “Surprised by Joy!” I find God doing this over and over in my life. As a hospital chaplain, I do make preparations before I visit at the bedside. But, I must restrain from pushing my agenda because everyone would rather be blessed by the fullness of God’s grace than by my best efforts and plans.

Houston Non Gala – GalaEven Hurricane Harvey Could Not Dim the Stars Over TexasBy Chuck Hix, Director of Development - Southern Texas Region

This year Hurricane Harvey ravaged the landscape of South Texas but the human spirit became very much alive. Neighbor helping neighbor became a beautiful response. People of all backgrounds and cultures helped each other.

The same holds true for Lifeline Chaplaincy and Compassionate Touch loyal donors. The decision was made to forego our annual fundraising dinner while so much recovery as going on. But not having the dinner made no difference to our donors. Those who normally would sponsor a table at the dinner did so, those who would normally underwrite did so, those who would normally make an annual gift at the dinner, did so. God has blessed this ministry and our donors for 34 years. As long as we continue to do His work, I believe God will always be with us.

So, from the depths of our hearts, Thank You and May God Bless you and your families.

Houston 2017 Award Recipients

It has been a long-standing tradition for Lifeline Chaplaincy and Compassion-ate Touch to recognize individual or institutions that have made significant contributions to both organizations each year. This is normally done at our annual fundraising dinners, but due to the hurricane this year we were not able make such recognitions. Living Beneath the Lighted Cross –A Personal ReectionBy Paul Riddle, Director of Spiritual Care - HoustoneOverlooking the sanctuary of Bering Drive Church of Christ, where I worship, is an illuminated cross. To one side, behind a decorative brick wall, there is a light switch, which controls the light that illuminates the cross. Posted on the wall next to the switch is a note, written many years ago by Bill Love, who was minister of that church for over twenty years, and also served as Lifeline Chaplaincy’s first Director of Development. The note says, “This switch is always to remain on, out of respect for Jesus, and to remind us that we, his disciples, are called to live under his cross.” The first time I saw that note I was moved – not only by fond memories of Bill, but more importantly by the power of the symbol of the illuminated cross. The always-lighted cross in my place of worship challenges me to reflect on the relationship between worship and the rest of my life. What light does the cross cast on, say, my Monday morning commute? How about my dealings with patients on Tuesday afternoon? How does it illuminate the way I treat the person behind the counter at the sandwich shop at lunch on Wednesday? The mechanic at the garage on Thursday? My wife when she comes home after a long day at work?

How does the cross illuminate my sense of self-worth? My ideas about what constitutes success? My attitude toward failure (my own failures and those of others)? My decisions about how to use my time, my money, and my talents? By the way, does the cross cast a critical light on that little word “my?”

The lighted cross also stands as a beacon of hope, reminding me that love is more powerful than hatred, that hope is stronger than despair, and that God is deeply and personally invested in me, in you, and in the redemption of all humanity. Far from being merely a pious decoration, the lighted cross is a potent reminder of the bond we Christians share in our Lord, of the sacrifice that forged that bond, of the love that motivated the sacrifice, and of the life to which we who live under it are called – both when we worship together and then go our separate ways to be salt and light in the world.
