    FASHIONS OF PAKISTAN & INDIA

    What is Fashion?

    - A sense of style that changes from decade to decade, century to century.- Conventional usage in dress, manners, etc., especially of polite society, or conformity

to it: the dictates of fashion; to be out of fashion.

    - Fashion is a general term for a popular style or practice, especially in clothing, footwear, accessories, makeup, body piercing, or furniture. Fashion refers to a

distinctive and often habitual trend in the style with which a person dresses, as well as

to prevailing styles in behavior. Fashion also refers to the newest creations of textile

designers. The more technical term, costume, has become so linked to the term

"fashion" that the use of the former has been relegated to special senses like fancy

dress or masquerade wear, while "fashion" means clothing more generally and the

study of it. Although aspects of fashion can be feminine or masculine, some trends

    are androgynous.

    Importance of Fashion

Fashion makes our life colorful and changes our life with the time or according to the

time. It makes me feel good whenever I follow fashion and trends. So, Fashion is not a new thing

in the world as it is found everywhere. Fashion changed from time to time but it has shown its

existence in all ages. Not only young people do fashion, children, old people also do it.

Everybody can do it. But yes! for all age groups, fashion is different.

You can express your personality through fashion and you can express others that how

you feel about yourselves. If I am speaking for myself, if I am wearing tight fitting or short

clothes, I can never feel good about myself. But, if I am wearing comfortable clothes of nice

colors then I feel I am the coolest person in the world and forget all the worries. I feel too much

confidence in myself. For some women and some men, fashion plays an important part for them.

Good shopping for a new outfit can brighten a mood and gives so much pleasure. Some people

remember you by your dress For example: When you met my mother, you wore that shirt or I

saw her in my friends birthday party, she wore pink top. Some clothes can trigger sad memories

    also.

Fashion is an artistic expression of what is inside. I believe that fashion has the ability to

transform you into a new personality, a different person. Most of the styles are applies by

teenagers. They always want something unique and new style that differs from others. Therefore,

they create a new line of fashion trends to keep their own identity as a teenager.

idea for Pakistans first fashion week, held in November 2009.

    Make-up:

Make-up is considered an essential part of Fashion and Dressing in Pakistan. Some

people in Pakistan and many south Asian countries think as white or pale skin beautiful. In the

US it is the opposite. In Pakistan, make-up plays a big part for weddings. There is an odd part of

    Indian Fashion

    Introduction:

India is a country with diversified customs and cultures. People following various

traditions live here, their way of dressing also differ from each other. The traces of Indians being

fashionable can be found out from the ancient remains of Harappa and Mohenjodaro

civilizations. After the independence, globalization is being witnessed in the Indian fashion

industry, due to which changes have occurred in the style of Indian dressing.

Styles of wearing saris and salwar-kameez have changed. The look is more cosmopolitan

than region-specific. Different styles of blouses like katori style, halter-neck, back button

blouses, high neck blouses, puffed sleeve blouses, etc. have become the hot favorite among

women. The average lengths of the blouses have decreased. Saris are draped mostly in traditional

back pallo style or gujarati style. Indian fashion scene is greatly influenced by its films. For

example Mumtaz style sari draping inspired by yester-year heroine Mumtaz. Here sari is tightly

    draped around the body.

As far as salwar-kameez is concerned numerous styles and patterns can be given to this

garment. For instance the kameez can be long, short, A-line, skin tight, etc. Such variations can

be done to salwar as well as dupattas. Modern version of kameez is known as kurti, it could be

coupled with jeans, pants or churidar. It has taken the form of Indo-western outfit. People in

western countries too have started wearing kurtis.

    Characteristics of Indian Fashion.

With the expansion of western colonialism and development of foreign trades, Indian

fashion has been continually improving to perfection. However, the forte of Indian fashion

industry lies in its free-wheeling nature that incorporates anything exotic into integral Indian so

much that it is not that easy to sport its origin. Nowadays, the Indian fashion industry is

accelerated by mainly two aspects including customer choices and globalization of Indian

    economy.

There are many reasons accounting western impact on the Indian apparel and costume

industry. As a melting pot of multi ethnic groups, the open-minded culture coupled with cultural

diversities of India embrace the whole world in tolerance posture. Each group has its own

prominent style and type of dresses and costumes. Indian Fashion designers are known to

interweave these diverse fashions and lend an amazing Indian touch to them.

In recent years, the awards of Indian beauty pageants on international platforms have

been doing the nation proud. Their natural style of dressing has deeply affected the ladies fashion

apparel industry in India. The dresses donned by these participants are a blend of Indian and

western wear. Commoners openly ape their role models and this eventually becomes the latest

fad in the general fashion wear industry in India.

Apart from the two aspects as mentioned above, Indian movies are also big influencing

factor to leave a never vanishing impact on the minds of the Indians. As a matter of fact, it

affects daily lives. People blindly emulate what their role models are wearing. And with movies

following the western patterns of dressing it is natural for the ordinary folks to imitate them lock,

    barrel and stock.

The extensive scale of globalization and liberalization also pose great impact on the

Indian fashion industry. Indian imports from the west have also made it easier for Indians to keep

a track on the latest fashion clothes and accessories ruling the Western men and women's wear

market. Apparently, Indian fashion industry is also appealing to western buyers. Needless to say,

the fashion fraternity in India have willingly adopted western designs keeping in mind both the

    Indian and western sensibilities.

In addition, the Indian denizens embrace western fashion industry to such an extent that

they like to adapt the social and cultural changes and western lifestyles as well. Indian fashion

industry has come at par with international standards. It has become one of the most happening

and revenue generating industry of India. The people like to dress in style which is accepted

globally. Dressing has become of the important aspect of ones identity and personality

    Woman's clothing

In India, woman's clothing varies widely and is closely associated with the local culture,

religion and climate. Traditional Indian clothing for women in the north and east are saris or

ghagra cholis and (lehengas) while many south Indian women traditionally wear sari and

children wear pattu pavadai. Saris made out of silk are considered the most elegant. Mumbai,

formerly known as Bombay, is one of India's fashion capitals.[citation needed] In many rural

parts of India, traditional clothing is worn. Women wear a sari, a long sheet of colourful cloth,

draped over a simple or fancy blouse. Little girls wear a pavada. Both are often patterned. Bindi

is a part of women's make-up.[citation needed] Indo-western clothing is the fusion of Western

and Subcontinental fashion. Churidar, dupatta, Khara Dupatta, gamchha, kurta, mundum

neriyathum, sherwani are among other clothes.

The traditional style of clothing in India varies with male or female distinctions. This is still

followed in the rural areas, though is changing in the urban areas. Girls before puberty wear a

long skirt (called langa/paawada in Andhra) and a short blouse, called a choli, above it.

    Saree:

A saree or sari is a female garment in the Indian subcontinent.A sari is a strip of

unstitched cloth, ranging from four to nine meters in length that is draped over the body in

various styles. There are various traditional styles of saree: Sambalpuri Saree from East,

Kanchipuram from South, Paithani from West and Banarasi from North among others. The most

common style is for the sari to be wrapped around the waist, with one end then draped over the

    shoulder baring the midriff.

The sari is usually worn over a petticoat. Blouse may be "backless" or of a halter neck

style. These are usually more dressy with a lot of embellishments such as mirrors or embroidery

and may be worn on special occasions. Women in the armed forces, when wearing a sari

piece set consisting of a langa, a choli and a stole wrapped

over it like a saree. Women usually wear full sarees.

Saris are usually known with different names in

different places. In Kerala, white saris with golden border,

are known as kavanis and are worn on special occasions. A

simple white sari, worn as a daily wear, is called a mundu.

Saris are called pudavai in Tamil Nadu. In Karnataka, sarisare called kupsas.

    Ghagra Choli (lehenga choli)

A Ghagra Choli or a Lehenga Choli is the traditional clothing of women in Rajasthan and

Gujarat.[citation needed] Punjabis also wear them and they are used in some of their folk dances.

It is a combination of lehenga, a tight choli and a odhani. A lehenga is a form of long skirt which

is pleated. It is usually embroidered or has a thick border at the bottom. A choli is a blouse shell

garment, which is cut to fit to the body and has short sleeves and a low neck.

Different styles of ghagra cholis are worn by the women, ranging from a simple cotton

lehenga choli as a daily wear, a traditional ghagra with mirrors embellished usually worn during

navratri for the garba dance or a fully embroidered lehenga worn during marriage ceremonies by

    Salwar Kameez

The salwar kameez is the traditional wear of women in Punjab, Haryana, Himachal

Pradesh and Kashmir and has become the most popular dress for females. It consists of loose

trousers (the salwar) narrow at the ankles, topped by a

tunic top (the kameez). It is named as "Punjabi suit" or

simply "shalwar" in the north and "churidaar" in

Southern India. Women generally wear a dupatta or

odani (Veil) with salwar kameez to cover their head and

shoulders. It is always worn with a scarf called a

dupatta, which is used to cover the head and drawn over

the bosom. The material for the dupatta usually depends

upon that of the suit, and is generally of cotton,

georgette, silk, chiffon among others.[citation needed]

This dress is worn by almost every teenage girl in lieu of

western clothes. The salwar kameez is most common in

the northwestern part of India. Many actresses wear the

salwar kameez in Bollywood movies.[citation needed]

    Churidaar Kurta

Churidaar is a version of salwar, which is loose up to knees and then fits the calf below.

A salwar is a baggy pyjama with pleats which gets narrow at the ankles whereas churidaar fits

below the knees with horizontal gathers near the ankles. Usually a long kurta, which goes below

the knees, is worn with the churidaar.

    Ghagro-Kudti (Rajasthani)

Pattu Pavadai or Langa davani is a traditional dress in south India and Rajasthan, usually

worn by teenage and small girls. The pavada is a cone-shaped garment, usually of silk, that

hangs down from the waist to the toes. It normally has a golden border at the bottom.

Girls in south India often wear pattu pavadai or Langa davani during traditional

functions. Girls in Rajasthan wear this dress before marriage (and after marriage with sight

modification in certain section of society.)

developed than that of its neighbor and the similarities between the two countries mean theyshould look to share their design activities.

"Pakistan and India share their roots, their culture and a common value system and heritage. This

is what we already share and this is the right step to begin from and build upon.

roof under the India fashion criteria. These boutiques which are also fondly known as desi

    Conclusion

The differences between Pakistanis and Indians are not as prominent as say the Sudanese

and the Swiss. There are many similarities but the two people are not as similar as Americans

and Canadians. Certainly, there are cases where a Punjabi from Pakistan would obviously looklike their counterpart in a small part of Punjab partitioned to India. (Punjabis comprise of 2% of

India). Similarly, KP and Baluchistan have similarity to Afghanistan and Iran respectively.

Indeed most bordering nations have an overlap of similarity in multiple dimensions. However, A

simple comparison of ordinary people in ordinary circumstances makes it blatantly obvious, that

Pakistanis and Indians are two different people. The purpose of highlighting these differences is

not to suggest that one is better than the other. Far from it, every country should try to emulate

the positives of every other country. The purpose is only to respect our differences. Pakistanis

only wish to lay claim to their proud pre-Islamic and Islamic heritage. In claiming our heritage,

we dont wish to denigrate any other be it India, Afghanistan, Tajikistan or Iran.
