Holiday & Atypical Schedule Days • September-December 2014

There’s something about this place… and it’s all inside this edition of the fall 2014 JCC Program Guide. As always the Guide is intended to complement our monthly Center Peace publica-tion by providing our members with a time-sensitive snapshot of the variety of programs and services we offer from August through December. On our front cover you will see a chart of elements akin to the one we learned in high school chemistry. Only, if you look

closely, you will see that this chart has elements associated with the many programs and services we offer at the “J”. In fact, the J is at the very center of the chart because it is the element that defines us.

You will see from the table of contents on the inside front cover that programs are listed by constituent groups beginning with early childhood and continuing through services for adults. Interspersed you will find a series of advertisements describing upcoming events and special program initiatives that may be of interest to you.

While this guide will serve as a program and special event refer-ence for you for the next 5 months, it also lists our hours of operation and a calendar of special events (page 2), upcoming holiday schedules (page 3), and a listing of local businesses that participate in our Dine Around and MVP programs (see pages 15 & 23 respectively) and provide JCC members with special incen-tives and promotions throughout the year. In addition, at the bottom of each page we have included additional contact infor-mation such as our phone and fax numbers and website address so that you can reach us in whatever way is most convenient. You may also check us out via our Mobile website, Facebook, Twitter and Yelp.

Program registration for many classes is available online making it even easier to sign up for a class or program. Please note that some of our more popular programs do have registration limits, so don’t wait too long to register. Sign up early and save your space. Some of the programs and events highlighted in this issue include: Youth Soccer Academy (see pages 7 & 11), Youth Swim Clubs (see pages 12 & 13), junior and adult tennis programs (see pages 12, 13 & 22), Family Sukkot and Chanukah Celebrations (see page 8), and STARZ and NOVA Children’s Theatre Produc-tions (see pg 8).

Then, of course, we’ve got the Vexler Theatre’s 16th season, which this year will feature a quartet of spectacular theatre experiences including Dale Wasserman’s acclaimed stage adap-tation of, “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”, Euripides’ tragic story, “The Trojan Women”, the Pulitzer Prize winning romantic comedy production, “Tally’s Folly” and the season concludes with the return of Neil Simon’s hilarious production of “Rumors” (see page 16). Season tickets are on sale now and if you’re not already a Vexler Theatre supporter, please consider becoming a “Friend of the Vex” and help us maintain the high quality enter-tainment featured each season at The Vex.

Services to adults of all ages continue to be a high priority. We provide transportation for seniors as well as meals, socialization and group exercise along with periodic opportunities to attend cultural arts events including Sunday afternoon Vexler Theatre performances, select concerts, lectures and Jewish Film Festival showings. Our Silver Cinema initiative is offered complimentary on the 1st and 3rd Thursday of each month. And for adults of all ages check out some of the upcoming adult enrichment and education activities (see pages 17-22) scheduled this fall.

Later this fall we invite you to join us at our annual fall fundrais-er The Main Event on Saturday, November 22, as we honor Pat Kalmans and Mike Ozer, the Gladys and Ralph Lazarus Founda-tion, and the Lazarus Foundation Fund for their very special contributions to the JCC and our community. They each represent the best of leadership and philanthropy. We hope you will join us for another fabulously fun evening with great food and enter-tainment and all of your best friends. Invitations will be mailed early October.

Please always keep in mind that we value your membership and hope you will keep us informed about how we’re doing. We learn a great deal from the feedback we receive from our members and it helps us to develop new programs and make adjust-ments to existing services to make them more effective. For your convenience, you may use any of the following methods to tell us about your experiences at the “J”. You can call us, fax us, or email us. And of course, you can always fill out a comment card at the courtesy desk or just come by and visit with us. Your input helps us improve our services and increases the value of your membership.

Thank you for your on-going support and enjoy looking through your fall 2014 Program Guide for all of the ways for you to Live up!

Early Childhood ServicesThe Block and Dreeben School for Young Children: where play and learning connect! Our program is one of twenty-six NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) accredited programs in the greater San Antonio area, and the only one that is Jewish. NAEYC sets the highest national standards for early childhood programs. The JCC pro-gram, ranging from infant care to pre-kindergarten, promotes the development of the “whole child”: socially, emotion-ally, intellectually, physically, and spiritually. The joy of childhood is nurtured, and children are respected as capable and competent learners. The curriculum is based on learning through play in an environment carefully prepared by early childhood education professionals. Jewish culture, values, and traditions are integrated into daily activities. The Block and Dreeben School for Young Children is exclusively for JCC members. Visit www.jccsanantonio.org/ecd for more information and feel free to call 210-302-6846 for a private tour.

Discover: CATCH (“Coordinated Ap-proach to Chil-dren’s Health”) Early Childhood is a program deliv-ered through the

JCC Association, the leadership network for the JCC Movement, the aim of which is to enrich the lives of young children, their families, and our faculty while working toward establishing healthy eating and physical activity habits. Developing these healthy habits early in life should lead to making healthy nutri-tion and activity choices later on.

At the JCC School for Young Children we began implementation of this dynamic program with a one-day teacher workshop in June with the objective of incorporating specially designed, develop-mentally appropriate, physically active, and fun games and ac-tivities into the daily curriculum. Teachers and Coach Randy are currently implementing lessons designed so that children move and stretch their muscles and raise their heart rate through mu-sic and movement and playing games in the classroom, on the playground and during their time with Coach Randy. Teachers also talk with children about “Go Foods” and “Whoa Foods” with the intention of cultivating a strong foundation for children to make nutritional choices that are good for their bodies.
