Missouri Wine Country is a short jaunt down scenic Highway 94 amid rolling hills, beauti-ful countryside and

quaint German towns including Augusta, Defiance, Dutzow and Washington. These towns boast numerous wineries along the picturesque Missouri Weinstrasse (High-way 94) which are top producers, garner-ing critical acclaim. Tourists delight in sampling local vintages, touring wineries, strolling through historic districts and browsing the shops.

AugustaAugusta, located on the bluffs above

the Missouri River, is a scenic 35-mile drive from St. Louis. The area is home to picturesque farms, lush vineyards, breath-taking scenery, as well as antique shops, small boutiques, restaurants, unique his-toric sites and bed and breakfast inns.

Augusta also has the distinction as be-ing the first recognized wine district in the United States.

The motto of Arthur, Ill., “you’re a stranger only once,” is backed up the by hundreds of thousands of visitors who annually visit the town, situated in the

heart of Illinois Amish Country. Located 10 miles west of Interstate

57 off exit 203 in Central Illinois, horse-drawn, Amish buggies are a common sight around Arthur and Amish country.

Arthur, as well as Arcola, Tuscola and Sullivan, are home to about 4,500 Amish who farm the rich soil and operate numerous country stores.

Arthur’s vibrant shopping district boasts many Amish shops selling antiques, Amish quilts, fudge, cheese, handcrafted clothes, custom cabinetry, Martin guitars and much more. Most Amish businesses are closed on Sundays. At mealtime, locally-owned eateries serve lovingly prepared comfort food.

Arthur hosts many events each year including the 43rd Annual Cheese festival Sept. 5-7, It will feature giveaways of 700 pounds of cheese and crackers and a 100-foot sub sandwich, plus cheese competitions of all kinds, kid’s games, car show, inflatable rides, food and craft vendors and Amish buggy rides. On

Monday, a 5K and 10K race, along with a Strongman competition will be held.

Over 300 carved pumpkins will be on display Oct. 24-30 at the Arthur Lighted Pumpkin House. From Sept. 15-Oct. 31, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Great Pumpkin Patch will be open.

On Sept. 19, 600 to 800 bicyclists will gather in Arthur for the Bob Galloway Me-morial Amish Country bike tour.

Oct. 9-10, top-quality competition bar-becue teams from the Midwest will gather for the Bragging Rights of Central Illinois BBQ Competition.

Effingham, about 100 miles from St. Louis, is easy to spot when traveling down Interstate 70 at Interstate 57. Just look for gleaming white Cross at the Crossroads. With plenty of wa-ter in area rivers, this fall is a great time to take a float trip. The area surrounding Ellington, nestled in Reynolds County,

is a haven for outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy floating, boating, fishing, hunting, camping and hiking.

The small town is located at Missouri Scenic Highway 21 and Scenic Highway 106 approximately 125 miles south, south-west of St. Louis.

The Current River, the first river to be designated as a National Scenic River, is located just west of Ellington. It is known for its crystal clear water, large gravel bars and hundreds of springs.

Southeast of Ellington sits Clearwater

Lake for boating, swimming, water skiing, camping, pic-nicking, sightseeing, hunting or fishing. Webb Creek Rec-reation Area offers a secluded camping area with pavilions, modern restrooms, a play-ground, beach, showers, plus a full-service marina with boat rental available.

Three rivers – the East Fork, Middle Fork and West Fork – come together to form the Black River as they enter Clearwater Lake to the north. Webb Creek Recreation Area, on the west side of the lake offers camp-ing, restrooms, beach, marina and more.

The Current River Conservation Area encompasses approximately 28,000 acres

and includes the Blue Springs Natural Area. Blue Spring is the sixth largest, and the deepest, Missouri spring.

While visiting Ellington, also check out Rocky Falls, Klepzig Mill, the Shut-Ins and Reed Spring.

To view elk, take a driving tour at Peck Ranch or the Current River Conservation area west of Ellington. The Peck Ranch tour will not be offered Oct. 10-11, 24-26 and Dec. 5-6.

Outdoor recre-ation is a short drive down Interstate 44 where the Meramec River cuts a path between Cuba and Steelville. Steelville is

situated on three rivers: the Meramec, the Huzzah and the Courtois.

During warm weather, canoers and kay-akers flock to the rivers and streams, but the towns offer attractions too.

CubaCuba, 80 miles southwest of St. Louis

on I-44, is dubbed “the Rte 66 Mural City.” It boasts 12 colorful, outdoor murals, a history museum, a veterans memorial and the Guinness world record’s largest rock-ing chair, plus shops, dining and antique malls.

Cuba hosts numerous events through-out the year including the Rt. 66 Cuba Fest Fall Festival on Oct. 17 and 18. It will

feature crafts, music, apple-butter mak-ing, food, a 5K race and more.

A history lesson of early Lutherans in Missouri can be

found down Interstate 55 about 80 miles from St. Louis. There visitors will discover Perry County, to one of the oldest com-munities in the state, which includes Per-ryville, Frohna, Altenburg, Brazeau and Farrar.

In Frohna, the Saxon Lutheran Memo-rial, an outdoor history museum set in a log cabin village, highlights the pioneer-ing spirit of the early German immigrants who settled Perry County in the early 1800s. The site, listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, consists of 15 buildings, seven which are log cabins dat-ing from 1820 to 1840.

On Oct. 10, the memorial hosts a Fall Festival with demonstrations from the 1800s, crafts, German food, entertain-ment, apple-butter cooking and more.

While in Perry County, visit Perryville’s shops, wineries, then head to Willow House Bed and Breakfast. Built in 1901, the Victorian home has been historically restored and provides many of today’s ac-commodations.
