Ellington, Mo., is a havenfor outdoor enthusiasts who

the north. Webb Creek Recreation Area, on thewest side of the lake, has a secluded camping

The Current River Conservation Area en-

compasses approximately 28,000 acres of stateland and includes Buford Pond.

Blue Spring, known for its blue color, is amust see. It is the sixth largest, and the deepest,

spring in Missouri.Hikers will nd plenty of adventure and

water along the Blair Creek and Current Riv-er section of the Ozark Trail. Along the trail,

they’ll discover Blair Creek, Bloom Creek, Cur-rent River, Rocky Falls, Klepzig Mill and Buz-

Get Outdoors & Experience EllingtonOne of the oldest com-

munities in Missouri can befound down Interstate 55in Perry County. The area

was settled by Lutheranimmigrants in theearly 1800s. Located

just west of the Missis-

sippi River about 80 miles from St. Louis, thearea includes Perryville, Frohna, Altenburg,Brazeau and Farrar.

Frohna is home to the Saxon Lutheran Me-morial, an outdoor history museum on 30 roll-ing acres in a log cabin village. The museumwas the home of Wilhelm and Christian Bergt,brothers who participated in the 1839 immi-gration from Saxony, Germany. The site, listedon the National Register of Historic Places,consists of 15 buildings, seven of which are logcabins dating from 1820 to 1840.

In Perryville, shop specialty stores, visitwineries, then head to Willow House Bed andBreakfast, the town’s rst bed and breakfast.Built in 1901, the Victorian home has been re-stored and provides many of today’s accommo-dations. Located two blocks off the PerryvilleSquare, the B&B is ve minutes from I-55.

Creek Recreation Area – Hwy H – Bringthe family to boat, ski, ish,

and unwind on crystalclear Clearwater Lake.This area of the lake isformed where Webb Creekand Logan Creek emptyinto Clearwater Lake. Itis known for its crappie,bass and catish ishing in the spring and fun for the

entire family all summer long. Camping is available atWebb Creek Recreation Park; plus a full service marina

with boat/wave runner rentals on site. Webb Creek Parkfeatures over 40 campsites, swim beach, playground,showers, picnic pavilions, boat launch, and more. CallWebb Creek Marina at 573-461-2344 for marina,

Black River and KBridge Recreation

Area – K Hwy – Float, canoe,ish and explore the beautiful

Black River. Enjoy swimming,camping and picnicking on thebanks of the Black River.K Bridge Recreation Area andCampground offersplayground, showers,

electric and comfort station. Floats (raft orcanoe) can be arranged on site by calling Jeff ’sCanoe Rental at 573-598-4555. Cabin rental anda small general store is also available.

Current River – Hwy 106 – Fish, swim,camp and relax on crystal clear Current

River. Rough camping is available at Powder Mill(formerly Owl’s Bend) and features 10 familysites each with a picnic table, ire pit, lantern hook

and bathrooms nearby. These are on a irst come basis.

Most campsites at Powder Mill are located on the waterso bring your tubes and rafts and expect to get wet. This

campground is conveniently located near the Ozark Trailwhich passes by on the far side of the river. For the shorthike enthusiast a marked 1.5 mile hiking trail leads to thebeautiful Blue Spring. Family sites are $10.00 per night;electric not available.

Blue Spring, Current River – Hwy 106 –

This spring is the 6th largest spring in Missouri andknown for its deep blue color. The quiet forest hikethrough huge oak and sycamore trees preparesvisitors for the coming scene as they approach thesky-blue waters of Missouri’s deepest spring. Thestunning beauty of the spring – named “Springof the Summer Sky” by early Native Americans– and the peaceful natural setting are treasuresto long be remembered by those who stop to seethe spring. A walk of about a quarter mile alonga forest path is required to get to the springlocation. The parking area has picnic tables andbathrooms. A trail of 1.5 miles connects the BlueSpring parking lot with the Powder Mill campground.

Rocky Falls – NN Hwy – Cascading RockyCreek drops 40 feet through shut-ins of scenic igneous rockinto a lazy pool just right forswimming. The rocks are nottoo steep to climb nor the watertoo swift to enjoy – and thebeauty of the area is breath-taking. The falls are on nationalpark property and the site offerspicnic tables with ire grills

and bathrooms. There is also ahiking trail along Rocky Creekfor the more adventurous. TheOzark Trail also goes through

the park area for serious hikers. A must see if you are inthe area and fun for all ages. Wear non-slip shoes and usecaution when climbing on the falls. Camera is a must!

Current River Conservation Area – Consistsof 28,000 acres of state land. Deer, turkey, eagles,

elk and a multitude of wildlife can be seen. UTV’s, ATV’s,horse and vehicle trafic are welcome on miles of gravel

roads that wind through some 60+ food plots. Buford pond,Missouri’s irst ire tower, a 1926 log cabin and an earthen

Fort Barnesville can all be found here. Buford Pond providesishing and picnicking and is a favorite location of all. For

hunting enthusiasts an unstaffed rile and archery range are

provided. Main park entrance located on South

Road in Ellington, other entrances locatedoff Hwy 106 and H highway. Maps areavailable at the main park entrance.

Local Flavor –Visit the Copeland-Shy Visitor

Center to pick up brochures and

information about the area. This home is

believed to be the oldest home in Ellington,

dating back before 1900. Located at 155 W.

Walnut Street (Hwy 106).

You won’t want to miss the Reynolds CountyMuseum while visiting Ellington. This museum is illed with

relics from days gone by and the rich history of the Ozarks.Volunteers staff the establishment and are happy to answerquestions; open Mar-Nov, T-F 10-4 and 2nd Saturday of themonth 10-4. Call 573-663-3233 for more information.

To add a little nostalgia to your visit grab a blanketor your lawn chairs and enjoy a movie the way yourgrandparents once did… under the stars! Built in1949 and recently renovated, 21 Drive In is oneof only 13 operating drive-ins in Missouri. Moviesstart at dusk May-September. 21 Drive In is located

Ozark Trail – Blair Creek & Current Riversection; Hwy 106 – Whether you are looking for

a one day hike or want to make a few days of it; hikingthese sections of the Ozark Trail is rewarding andadventurous. Such splendid locations as Blair Creek,Bloom Creek, Current River, Rocky Falls, Klepzig Mill andBuzzard Mountain Shut-Ins are located right on the trail.For the adventurous visitor this is a must!

Blair Creek – Hwy106 – This area is a

favorite of the locals! Forthe person who is lookingfor the unknown, adventureinto the wild Ozark hills for

the beautiful views, caves,swimming, picnicking. Hereriding the back roads in ATV’s,UTV’s and 4-wheel drives isexciting and fun. Many horse

enthusiasts adore this area as well. Make sure and bringyour camera you will want to capture this area in print.Entrance located North of Hwy 106 on County Road 106-B (across from Blue Spring entrance).

Scenic Highway 106 – This 26 mile drivebetween Ellington and Eminence is known state

wide for its scenic views and beauty. This section ofhighway is also home to the TransAmerica Bicycle Trailand sees many bicycle travelers from April-October.

Peck Ranch – H Highway, Shannon County –Listen for the bugle this fall! Elk are now roaming

the hills of the Ozarks and can be seen in Peck Ranch,Current River Conservation Area and the surrounding
