We are proud to present the “2018 Volunteer Family Of The Year Award” to the Ryan Gertsch family, Cheyenne. Ryan, Redco Construction, has been a corporate sponsor of the Father Son Duct Tape Duel in Cheyenne for six years. He, his parents M.J. and Tamera, his wife, Allisa and children, Camden and Rachel, all participate in the sponsorship.

Ryan says it is their way of giving back to the community with building supplies, tools, talents and abilities. He added this is a special event for fathers, sons, granddads, grandsons, uncles and nephews. The family collects building materials all year long in a special trailer. Ryan and M.J. bring power tools to the Duel to cut materials for the father son teams, “because if is faster and safer.”

Our thanks to each and every one of you for your support, enthusiasm and caring. You are appreciated. CONGRATULATIONS.

We are honored to announce President of the State Board of Directors, Nancy Aaker, Casper, has been chosen for the 2018 “Volunteer Of The Year”.

Nancy has volunteered to serve as President, guiding the agency with her leadership, encouragement, common sense and caring. She has conducted monthly board meetings with a welcoming attitude that encourages openness and discussion. Her leadership and support has taken the agency to fulfill the

mission of providing assistance to Wyoming residents in need. She could also be found at the Father Son Duct Tape Duel, making sandwiches for the Teddy Bear Tea, volunteering at the Ladies Soup Bowl Luncheon, carrying boxes for the Thankful Thursday event and donating supplies and funding.

To know Nancy is to admire and appreciate her. Being a wife, mother and grandma is important to her as she is the backbone of her family, just as she is the backbone of Wyoming CARES.

Thank you Nancy for all you have done to ensure the success of Wyoming CARES. Congratulations.

Introducing the “2018 Volunteer Duo of the Year” – Abigail Grace and James R. Salisbury, Cheyenne.

Known to family and friends as Abbi and Jim, this father and daughter duo embrace the role of leadership volunteers at the former walks, and currently, at the Father Son Duct Tape Duel and Father Daughter Social.

There is no job too big or too small for Abbi and Jim. Abbi demonstrates her skills at the t-shirt table, the duct tape table, and most recently, at the roses table. With a smile, she created beautifully wrapped roses for dads, granddads and uncles and their princesses.

Jim supports the Father Son Duct Tape Duel by recruiting sponsors, serving as Master of Ceremonies, carrying endless boxes, setting up and tearing down and greeting fellow leadership volunteers. At the Father Daughter Social, he is everywhere from setting up and tearing down to welcoming guests at the check in table to volunteering at the photo area.

Thank you Abbi and Jim for your overwhelming support and caring. Congratulations.

Join us in celebrating the recipient of our “2018 Excellence Award”, Cindi Brachtenbach, Casper. Cindi has been working successfully to actively support all programs of Wyoming CARES, for sixteen years.

With an abundance of common sense, caring, problem solving skills, kindness, leadership and organizational skills, Cindi can be found at the office labeling and preparing the 7200 newsletters for shipment, and providing her computer

skills in organizing agency documents. You can also find her taking photos at the Father Daughter Social, working at the Father Son Duct Tape Duel, Thankful Thursday, the Rocky Mountain Art Show and Auction, formerly on the road supporting the Ride With The Winds Bike Tour, walks and Duct Tape Duels.

Cindi is a fifth grade teach in the Natrona County School District. Her love of teaching compels her former students to return and express their gratitude to her. She is also a wife and mother to a sixteen year old daughter – a role she holds in high esteem.

Thank you Cindi for always being there when you are needed. Congratulations!

Thank you Michelle Heaphy, owner of Pottery By You, Casper, for hosting a bowl painting promotion during the month of September. The public was invited to have fun at Pottery By You, creating colorful bowls for the Ladies Soup Bowl Luncheon in November. Thank you to all who participated and painted 21 colorful bowls. Your

talent and donation is recognized and appreciated.

200 ladies attending the Ladies Soup Bowl Luncheon, held in November, enjoyed a choice of eight different soups, veggies, cake, rolls and drinks at the annual Luncheon. In addition, ladies were invited to choose and keep their pottery soup bowls, receive an array of door prizes, a 50/50 raffle and pottery auction.

We would like to extend our appreciation to the local Casper businesses who donated an array of soups: Holiday Inn, La Cocina Mexican Restaurant and The Office Bar and Grill.

Bowls were donated by the Evanston High School, the Wind River High School (Pavillion). Joy Jones, potter (Riverton) Nancy Hallows (Evanston), Michelle Heaphy (Pottery By You) Casper and Mike Olson, Instructor and students at Casper College.

The 9th annual Father/Son Duct Tape Duel came to town to cover the Gillette National Guard Armory with duct tape and all the creativity of fathers, sons, grandfathers, uncles and nephews. Teams built amazing creations with duct tape and providing some excellent bonding time for fathers and sons. More than 200 participants used hundreds of rolls of duct tape to create flags, video game consoles, minecraft creepers, ships, tanks, cars, and more.

The Wyoming Army National Guard Armory in Gillette provided space for the event, provided free of cost to Wyoming CARES. We would like to thank the Guard for their service and civic responsibility in helping to make this event possible.

The event was sponsored this year by The Home Depot, The Bicycle Shop, Weatherford, Inc., Kistler Tent & Awning, NALC Local 1548, TRENDS Furniture, and Misty Moon Bath and Body. Sponsor graciously donated grey and colored duct tape, cardboard tubes and boxes, plastic containers, egg cartons, and much more as supplies for the father-son teams, who turned them into amazing creations.

Sponsors also provided “Best of Show” awards at the event. Along with the Duel itself, the evening included pizza, cake, T-shirts, photographs, and a whole lot of fun. Congratulations and thank you to all of the volunteers, sponsors, and the dueling teams for their time at this family event!

JULIE KRAMER COLE 2019 FEATURED ARTIST

CARING HANDS AWARD

Assistance Summary

In 1992, Julie Kramer Cole, Colorado, was nominated and selected to the Colorado Hall of Fame. Specializing in painting art, prints and posters about the American West, she began her career as a freelance fashion illustrator.

Listed in Who’s Who in American art, Julie has received national acclaim by winning numerous awards for her art, prints and posters. Through marvelous and unusual composition, as well as a rich, natural artistic talent, Julie is able to present the viewer with a slice of Western life that goes far beyond the expected or the ordinary. Her use of soft, clean colors lends purity to her art and allows the drama and emotion shine through in a serene and thoughtful way. The “hidden images” in her canvas art has sparked collectors.

Come meet Julie Kramer Cole, at the annual Rocky Mountain Art Show and Auction on May 4, 2019 at the Hilton Inn, Casper, WY.

The CARING HANDS award was created in memory of 9-year-old David Martinez, an incredibly happy and hard -working volunteer for the bike tour. David was an amazing volunteer who welcomed every cyclist and volunteer to the bike tour. He would get up early in the morning and help his dad and brother make breakfast and be there again in the evening to help cook dinner. The award has no monetary value, however it is the highest award the bike tour committee can present.

There is no single person who does more to ensure the success or safety of this tour than this year’s honoree. She is always present to solve problems, help riders, and keep everything running smoothly. She might not be a volunteer, but she has shouldered more responsibility than anyone, and I would not be exaggerating to say that without her, this tour wouldn’t be possible.

It is our honor to present the recipient of the 2018 CARING HANDS AWARD to Margaret Salisbury, to recognize her years of dedication and commitment to the “Ride With the Winds Bike Tour”®.

FLU VACCINE TIP SHEETFlu Season is here. Get seasonal flu vaccine facts with this timely tip sheet

Wondering how you can protect yourself from seasonal flu? Or just weighing the pros and cons of the seasonal flu vaccine. The flu vaccine is not only about protecting you from getting the flu but also to prevent you from transmitting the flu to vulnerable people around you, such as the elderly, children, or immune-compromised. Here are some of the fast facts about flu prevention that you have been looking for.

• Influenza causes more than 2000,000 (and maybe as many as 710,000) people in the U.S. to be hospitalized each year. Up to 56,000 people die each year from flu-related causes. Prevention is the key: The United States Advisory Committee on immunization Practices recommends that everyone ages 6 months and older should have a flu vaccine.

• Ideally, you should get the seasonal flu vaccine by the end of October. The upcoming holiday season means hugs and kisses, which help spread the flu virus. However, getting vaccinated with the flu shot makes sense any time during the flu season, which my last from September to May.

Page 13: Fall, 2018 Ride With The Winds Bike Tourwyomingcares.org/Newsletter_files/Wyo.CARES_Fall18.pdf · 2019-10-08 · Fall, 2018 Charitable Agency for RESidents of Wyoming The communities

Page 13

• Think the flu vaccine can give you the flu? It can’t. The vaccine is made with a dead (flu Shot) or weakened form of the flu virus (nasal flu vaccine) which can’t give you influenza. The nasal flu vaccine has caused transfer of the virus to others, but the risk of this happening is extremely low.

• Concern that there’s a link between autism spectrum disorders and the vaccine preservative thimerosal has prevented some parents from getting vaccinated. Worry no more. Studies have found that there is no link between vaccines containing thimerosal and ASD. And if you’re still worried, thimerosal-free flu vaccines are now the standard for children in the U.S. – and available to adults for the asking.

• Stuck on the fact that you need to get vaccinated every year? There’s a good reason. Flu viruses change, so flu vaccines must change, too. Each year’s vaccine is unique, cultivated from the flu strains health officials believe will be most menacing that year.

• It’s long been advised that people with allergies to eggs should not get the flu shot. However, the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology says the vaccine contains such a low amount of egg protein that it’s unlikely to cause an allergic reaction in those with an egg allergy. If you have a severe egg allergy (anaphylaxis), talk to your doctor before getting the flu vaccine. Also, flu vaccines not made with the use of eggs is available.

• For those age 65 and older, a high dose of the flu vaccine called Fluzone is recommended when available. It may be more effective at protecting the elderly because of their immune systems are more fragile.

• The nasal spray Flu Mist vaccine is approved for healthy, non-pregnant adults and those between the ages of 2 and 49. There is a needle-less option for people ages 18 – 64.
