A sliding fee scale is provided to help make classes affordable for all families. No one will be denied participation for inability to pay.

The Collapse of Parenting: How We Hurt Our Kids When We Treat Them Like Grown-ups - Parenting Focused Book Study

In The Collapse of Parenting, internationally acclaimed author Leonard Sax argues that rising levels of obesity, depression and anxiety among young people can be traced to parents abdicating their authority. The result is children who have no standard of right and wrong, who lack discipline and who look to their peers and the Internet for direction. Sax shows how parents must reassert their authority--by limiting time with screens, by encouraging better habits at the dinner table and byteaching humility and perspective—to help their children thrive in an increasingly complicated world.

Christine Pedretti, licensed parent educator, will lead group discussions on this intriguing book. Copies of the book are available at Amazon.com.

Present Moment Parenting, Tina FeigalEver wonder why typical parenting, therapy, and teaching techniques are ineffective with some children? Arguments, tantrums, time-outs, bad language, trouble at school, problems with peers, refusal to cooperate, difficult mornings, challenging transitions …Learn ways to bring about real change with proven, positive, esteem-building techniques. The approach applies to all children, ages 2-18, but is especially helpful for children with ADHD, ODD, autism or any child whose behavior does not improve with typical methods.

Tina Feigal, M.S., is a former school psychologist, mother of three sons, and “Nana” of three fabulous grandchildren. She operates The Center for the Challenging Child, a division of Anu Family Services, helping adults apply the techniques in her book, Present Moment Parenting: The Guide to a Peaceful Life with Your Intense Child (2017). Tina has been featured in the Minneapolis Star Tribune and on KARE 11 TV’s “Supernanny.”

Early Childhood Screening

Early Childhood Family Education offers a quality preschool program for 3-5 year old children and their parents. Children have opportunities to learn through their play with others, develop pre-reading and math skills and participate in music and movement activities. Monthly unit lessons are presented from “Opening the World of Learn-ing”, a research-based curriculum. Large muscle play is available at an indoor gym and an outdoor nature-based play ground.

Parents attend on Mondays or Tuesdays and are involved in both the children’s classroom and a parent discussion group. Sibling care is provided on those days. Call 952-442-0613 for registration information.

Waconia Family Preschool has been approved as a 4-star rated program through the MN Department of Human Services Parent Aware Program. To earn a Four Star Rating, programs demonstrate high quality and excel in the use of best practices in preparing children for kindergarten.

Is your child 3½ years old?The early childhood years are an important time of rapid learning and growth. Early Childhood Screening is a FREE service offered by District 110 that will check a child’s overall development and health. Children are screened by a licensed early childhood teacher and a school nurse. Results of the screening help identify any learning or health concerns that may require attention before a child enters kindergarten. In Minnesota all children are required to complete Early Childhood Screening before kindergarten entrance, however, it is not a test for kindergarten. The preferred age to screen is between the ages of 3 1/2 and 4 years old.

Early Childhood Screening includes: * A look at your child’s development * Vision and hearing checks * Height and weight measurements * Immunization and health history review

Screenings take place at the Early Childhood Family Center, 520 Industrial Blvd. Please call 442-0613 to receive more information and to schedule an appointment for your child.

Meet Sue Forster, the new Early Childhood Supervisor

Hello District 110 Early Childhood Families! My name is Sue Forster and I am so happy to have the opportunity to serve you. My career in Early Childhood began 26 years ago in Sleepy Eye, MN. During those years I enjoyed teaching preschool and ECFE classes, providing parent education,

implementing early childhood screening and coordinating the early childhood program. For the past 10 years, I have worked in Waconia and Westonka ECFE programs. After a three year in-termission from District 110, I’m excited to be back and have the opportunity to reconnect with the families and staff in Waconia!

Charlie Vacek

CharlieVacekFootballK-6IthinkCharlieVacekwouldbean outstanding nomination. Charlie has given countless

amountsoftime, effort, compassionandlifelessonstothekids he coaches. I have personally coached with Charlie for 7 years and the kids gravitate to him. He continually

strivestomakethekidsnotonlybetterathletes, butbetterpeople. He truly care about the kids and always puts steps in place to make sure the kids are having fun while learn-

ing. I have witnessed kids who showed little interest at the beginningofaseasonandbytheend, theylovethesportand the discipline that is taught. I have been coaching in our youth program for a long time and I think you would

doing our program a dis-service by not strongly consider-ing Charlie for this recognition.
