End of Term Presentation: Fall 2015Nathan Lex

CBG Tech Services Co-op Term 4 of 5

About Me

From Dublin, OhioFourth Co-op with Marathon

– Canton Fall 2013– Canton Summer 2014– Cincinnati Spring 2015

Education– Fourth year at the University of Cincinnati– Bachelor’s in Chemical Engineering– Graduate Spring of 2017

Goals for the Fall

My GoalsPersonal Goals

– Take on as many unit engineer responsibilities as I can

– Get the chance to learn a new unit and understand how it is integrated with the rest of the refinery

Professional Goals – Strengthen communication skills – Strengthen technical knowledge on

unit/tower design

3

Projects and Responsibilities

CFU Max Rate Test – Field data collection– Mass and Energy Balance– Post Audit Memo

CFU/LEP FOE MetricsSpring 2015 Bundle Cleaning Program Memo

4

CFU Max Rate Test

Scope of WorkComplete CFU Max Rate test

– Assisted operations with temperature and pressure surveys around all heat exchangers and pumps

– Collected routine and non-routine samples during varying step test rates

Results Mass and Energy Balance

– CFU Charge Rate: 40 MBPD– CFU Charge Rate: 46.2 MBPD

Recommendations for future process improvement

Post-rate test memo

CFU/LEP FOE (Focused on Energy) Metrics

9

Scope of Work: Identify energy metric points within the unit to trackDevelop FOE metrics and implement in UPM and Optimization Envelope

ResultsWorked with Design Engineer and Energy Technologist to determine energy

targets on the identified metric pointsDeveloped five metrics within the CFU

– Steam to Feed Ratios: Dehex, Debut and Deprop Towers– Absorbed Duty to Feed Ratio: Naphtha Splitter – Excess %O2: Naphtha Fired Reboiler

Developed two metrics within the LEP– Absorbed Duty to Feed Ratio: Dehex – Excess %O2: Dehex Fired Reboiler

Drafted memo

Bundle Cleaning Program-Spring 2015

Scope of WorkAnalyze pre and post-cleaning data on all exchangers cleaned in the Spring

2015 Determine the economic/operational benefit of cleaning each bundle

– Heater duty gains– Reducing hydraulic limitations– Avoiding NTE limit

Results Developed justifications and incentives for bundles that were cleaned Drafted post-audit memo

My Experience

My ExperienceReceived the opportunity to take on

greater responsibility– TAR – CFU Rate Test– FOE Metrics

Lessons Learned – Challenging my assumptions prior to

drawing a conclusionTake Away

– Greater understanding on unit integration and tower design

– Greater confidence as an engineer
