Try-It’s, Junior Badges and Interest Projects are not going away. They will look slightly different and some will have different

names. All will be called badges, but there will still be opportunities for girls to build skills in familiar and new

areas of interest.

What do you do between now and September 2011?

Cookie Sale Girls will receive one dollar ($1) per cookie box sold, after the first 50 boxes sold. The troop/ group/Juliette will also receive the basic commission from the first item sold.

The qualifications and criterion vary by Girl Scout level.Juniors Girls who commit to the PSA have the current Girl Scout year’s cookie sale to earn money toward a council-sponsored two or three night June trip during the same year.

Cadettes Girls who commit to the PSA have the current Girl Scout year’s cookie sale to earn money for Seniors one-year earning programs. An additional Girl Scout year is added for girls planning participation Ambassadors in two-year earning programs. Council-sponsored one- and two-year programs are listed below.

Gift of CaringThe Girl Scout Fall Product Sale Program is a perfect opportunity for friends and family to “give back” to their community during the holiday season. Not only does their gift help a family in need through the Monmouth/Ocean Food Bank, it also supports the girl participating in the program. A Gift of Caring is also a great way to get someone involved who may not want to purchase nuts or magazines for themselves. The council handles all deliveries. If girls would prefer to choose a different Gift of Caring recipient they can. Simply let the council know who your donations will benefit.

Magazine / Nut Promises OnlineThe magazine component of the 2010 Fall Product Sale Program has been redesigned to better help girls achieve their goals while learning modern entrepreneurial skills.

• Magazinescanbepurchasedonline. Look for the link on the council website (girlscoutsjs.org) and on the council fall product sale website ( jerseyshoregirlscoutnuts.com).

BONUS: Girls who provide e-mails to invite 12 or more friends and/or members of the family to order magazine online will receive a bonus patch. To earn the incentive, they MUST print the confirmation and detail order report and submit it to their troop by the due date.

Volunteer Training OpportunitiesThe Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore are committed to providing opportunities for volunteers to grow in competency and skills, as well as their overall understanding of the mission and guiding principles of Girl Scouting and the fundamentals of the Girl Scout program.

A wide range of training opportunities are provided in an effort to meet the needs of our volunteers. Training opportunities are designed to be flexible, engage adults in active participation, conflict resolution and cooperative learning experiences.

These courses can be completed online. Visit our council website for a listing of available online courses. All adults who work with a Girl Scout troop on a consistent basis must be registered and must take leadership training which is a requirement for the leader and assistant leader.

Training Registration ProcessRegistration is a must for all courses and will be confirmed upon receipt. Please complete a training registration form (located in the back of this publication) and return it to the service center with refundable registration fee of $5.00 and additional fee for cost related courses. Make checks payable to Girl Scouts of the Jersey Shore. Registration fee will be refunded on the date of the course when the participant attends. Registration fee will be refunded if participant cancels 48 hours prior to course date; fee will not be refunded if attendee cancels within 48 hours of course. If you have a question or would like additional information that is not posted here, contact Volunteer Development at 800-785-2090 ext 123.

In the interest of providing a valuable learning experience for volunteer leaders and volunteer trainers, the council may cancel a course if:1. Less than five participants are registered for a course.2. The council closes one/both service centers and/or Monmouth and Ocean County schools are closed.

Special NeedsPlease call the Service Center at 800-785-2090 to inform us of any special training needs. We will attempt to meet your needs

Welcome Webinars!Webinars happen online and by conference call at the same time. Each participant sits at his/her own computer and is connected to the course facilitator and other par-ticipants via the internet and phone. Participants will view a presentation while hearing the instructor over the phone. This is a new convenient option which allows you to learn in the comfort of your own home. Pre- registration is required for every course.

Leadership Training 1 (LT1)Leadership Training 1 is an introduction into leading girls. It provides informa-tion needed to work with girls, get a troop started, utilize necessary resources, practice and understand Girl Scout traditions, gain understating of council and national guidelines - including forms, holding ceremonies, participating in product sales, handling a troop bank account and more.

GS Leadership Experience Courses (GSLE)The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is the new face of Girl Scouting. It is the center of the new Girl Scout Program which was created to help girls and adults develop their own leadership skills. Girls of different ages follow different “Journeys” towards developing themselves as leaders. They discover things about themselves and the world around them. They connect with their friends, other Girl Scouts, and families and take action in the community, locally and globally, to make the world a better place.

Girl Scouts of the USA has designed a step by step course for leaders to under-stand the new Girl Scout Leadership Experience and provide direction for working with existing program materials. This course will show leaders of every age level how to lead the girls through their own leadership experience called GS Journeys as well as instructions on using badges, try-its and interest project patches to enhance the leadership experience for girls and adults.

Outdoor EducationAdults attend Outdoor education Courses in order to learn the necessary outdoor skills, and learn how to teach these skills to the girls. Outdoor training is required whenever a leader plans to implement skilled outdoor activities including outdoor cooking. Since space is limited, course is available on a first come-first serve basis.

Basic Outdoor SkillsThis course for Adults only includes skill training in health and safety planning with girls, outdoor cooking skills, basic knots and use of tools. A prep session is required for this course for adults to plan their menu and purchase food items for the weekend. Outdoor training develops not only a leader's skills in the outdoor program but utilizes the patrol system for budgeting, menu planning, and shopping. All courses are ADULTS ONLY.

The Christmas Bird CountFor over one hundred years, the desire to both make a difference and to experience the beauty of nature has driven dedicated people to leave the comfort of a warm house during the Holiday season. Each of the citizen scientists who annually brave snow, wind or rain, to take part in the Christmas Bird Count, makes an enormous contribution to conservation. Audubon and other organizations use data collected in this longest-running wildlife census to assess the health of bird populations - and to help guide conservation action.

At our workshops we will learn how to participate in the Christmas Bird Count which takes place from December 14 to January 5th each year. We will hook you up with a circle so that you can count birds and be part of the citizen scientist project where your data is shared with amateurs and professionals to be used to help understand more about our bird populations. This workshop will go beyond the counting with stations on migration, identifying birds and creating your own bird field journal, learning about owls (dissecting owl pellets) and much more.
