Imagine that your child has been dying right in front of you for months…and you had no idea. You couldn’t really tell because they look and act like everyone else, just a bit off. They’ve lost some weight, but they are getting taller. They’ve had stomach aches, but it is flu season. They have been moody, tired, even lazy…but kids can be like that. Then they develop an unquenchable thirst and go to the bathroom constantly.
You are told something horrible and life changing…your child has Type 1 Diabetes or T1D. Fast forward to the end of four days in the hospital where you are given the basics: prick their tiny fingers enough to draw blood 6-8 times per day, count every single carbohydrate they are going to eat, then do mathematical calculations to determine how much insulin to inject them with multiple times a day, just to keep them alive.
Your family and friends are there for you, but they just don’t get it. Try starting a conversation with, “You should have seen how high my kid was today!” Non-diabetics just don’t get it. But then, you are at a work party telling someone that your child was just diagnosed and they quickly call their friend who also has a T1D and you cry and laugh together on the phone because you live in the same town and your children go to the same school.
Living with Type 1 DiabetesAnother day, a mother in a waiting room overhears you and her child has been a T1D for years and she is so comforting to talk to, you exchange numbers to keep in touch. Finally…parents that get it!
For those of you looking for families that “get it”, contact the South Jersey T1Ds. We are a new Type 1 Diabetes Family Support Group based in Egg Harbor Township. Visit our website at www.SouthJerseyT1Ds.com to learn more!

During a family yoga class taught by Rosemary Hennessy, one might hear cows mooing in the meadow, frogs croaking or dogs barking at the moon. They’d look in the class and see children, mommies, daddies, and grandparents grazing the field in cow pose, balancing in frog pose or stretching and howling in downward facing dog pose. Play, Love, Yoga! is an extraordinary place for kids and their parents to experience fun, flexibility and focus. Grown-ups and children play yoga together in energy-releasing and age-appropriate classes. Rosemary says “In our family classes, we create simple, animated poses, games, music, and breathing exercises that help to strengthen coordination and muscles and build body awareness. We meow in cat pose, hiss in cobra and flutter our wings in butterfly, while we take an unforgettable yoga experience! Our inspirational classes encourage children’s natural thirst for knowledge while providing key bonding methods between parents and children.” Offering two types of family classes; Young Yogis - ages strong walkers to six years and Kind Kids – ages six to ten years.
A trained Karma Kids Yoga instructor, Rosemary Hennessy starts class with a sing-a-long song. “Rub your hands, sit up tall, take a deep breath…OM!” Next she’ll do a warm up, a group game to stretch the body, a sun dance and before they know it, they’re off on a yoga adventure! Each fun-filled class includes yoga poses, stories, puppets, music, games, and a sprinkling of gratitude. The children are engaged with animated poses, puppets and songs as they make their way through a yoga journey. The class ends with a relaxation time including foot rubs for the children and children rubbing their grown-ups’ feet if they choose to, followed by the ending sing-a-long: “My little light to shines to your little light, Namaste.”
Rosemary, mother of two daughters, Jillian and Rebecca, is also the director of Music Together of Galloway and has been working with young children for over twelve years. She knows that young children learn best through play and they learn how to be in the world by watching the models of their parents and loved ones. Whether it’s music, yoga, reading, or any activity, parents and loved ones are a child’s
most important teacher. The children will pick up behaviors, habits or attitudes about yoga by watching their parents engage in the practice; that is why family yoga is so important. Children gain a lot from practicing the traditional sun dance and various yoga poses. Before every series of classes, Rosemary explains to parents that it is not age-appropriate to expect the children to do everything exactly the way the grown-ups are doing but to trust in their own modelling and know that the children are taking in a lot more than they realize. They participate in their own way, sometimes later on that day or later that week. For instance, just this past Thursday, Rosemary taught a family class and later that day, Katie, Liam’s mommy, messaged her and said, “Liam (18 months) randomly went into cat pose, so she got down on the floor with him and he popped his bottom up, straightened his legs as he moved into downward-facing dog pose, so she followed his lead and did the same. They both
began giggling right there on the floor in down dog!!” Imagine Liam’s sense of self being the yoga leader! Yoga is a noncompetitive form of exercise that strengthens muscles and flexibility, while building confidence, self-esteem, focus, concentration and a sense of accomplishment. Best of all yoga is a hobby that families can enjoy together!
Classes are held in Galloway at the Reformation Lutheran Church on Thursdays mornings at 11:15 and Thursday afternoons at 4:00 and 5:00. The fall series will begin on Sept 25th. For more information, like us on Facebook at Play, Love, Yoga, email at [email protected] or call Rosemary Hennessy at 609 748 8309.

It’s the time of year when much of Jersey’s fresh produce is in peak season. We should celebrate the bounty of local fruits and veggies that are still available. This recipe offers the perfect transition into fall, as the filling for these mini-pies can be changed up with the season (think apples now and pumpkin later). The flexibility also makes it perfect for kids’ preferences.
Muffn tin mini pies are a fun way to involve your kids in the kitchen, and
gets them eating fresh, local produce. The muffin tin method also provides
the perfect portable portion that can be stashed in lunch boxes.

Let’s start with the crust. There are almost as many crust options as there are filling options. You can prepare your favorite pie crust recipe from scratch, and have the kids help roll it out and cut out circles large enough to fully line the cups of a greased muffin tin. An inverted plastic pint container makes the perfect cookie cutter, and is kid-safe. For a time-saving bonus, pre-made pie crusts are an option. To keep it healthy, make sure your pre-made crust is all-natural and free of trans-fats and preservatives. You can also use biscuit dough, which kids can press into the muffin tin cups. Wonton wrappers, which you can pick up in the produce section of the grocery store, are another easy option for a thin, crispy crust.
Any combination of your kids’ favorite fruit are a potential pie filling. Take advantage of the tail-end of blueberry and cherry season, or use local peaches and plums. All you need for the filling are 4-5 cups of chopped fruit (or whole blueberries), a tablespoon of lemon juice, 1/4 to 1/2 cup of sugar (or honey for a healthier alternative), 1/4 teaspoon of salt, and 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract. Add the filling ingredients to a saucepan and cook it down on medium heat, while stirring, until the fruit is soft and the sugar dissolves. Let the mixture cool thoroughly before allowing the kids to spoon it into the muffin cup crusts. Bake in a 375 degree oven until the crust is golden brown and the filling bubbles (around 15 to 20 minutes).

PaddlePak Back Pack by TrunkiPaddlePak is a water resistant backpack for little explorers. It prevents damp items from leaking through, including any mishaps with juice boxes, and also keeps contents inside dry on fall rainy days especially when puddle jumping. Your teacher will event approve since your homework won’t get wet. It’s also the perfect bag for lunch and gym. PaddlePak will protect your important items no matter what your little one does.
We love these cute backpacks. The quality can’t be beat, and the designs are adorable (9 unique designs to choose from) but, they are on the small side, definitely made for toddlers. The bottom “Fin or Flipper” is a “Dry zip pocket” great for trips to the beach or pool. The top of the backpack is a little odd as it rolls shut and then clips with a safety buckle - easy for the little guys to close on their own.Our little guys loved putting there valueables in the “Belly” and then playing with the bag as a toy. Very cool for pre-school or swim bag.

Sandwich Shaper by TovoloGreat for kids who love cutesy shaped food and the parents who love them. The quality of the cutters is fantastic and there are a variety of shapes and themes to choose from. Our little ladies loved the “Lady Bug & Flower” shaper while the boys favored the “Plane & Clouds” theme.
We used the cutters for just about every type of cold sandwich we could think of AND grilled cheese... even cut
out cookies. Works like a charm. The only problem we found was the overall size of the cutters, it was a little too large for most store bought bread.

a click. The speed of the processor is also impressive and allowed us to run every program needed to run a small business.—— www.amazon.com
