August 2018
Well…two weeks under my belt…the walls and/or the ceiling have not fallen in. I call that success. I am slowly transitioning here at Faith and in the great metro of Phoenix. The monsoon season arrived with a bang and I hadn’t realized how much I miss thunderstorms since leaving the Midwest. The sound of rain hitting the house has a pleasant affect; usually lulling me to sleep. I do have to admit, the dirt resulting in mud from a Haboob doesn’t excite me much, but I will take both the good with the less than desirable.
Moving is a good reminder that the world is constantly in motion and change is all around us. Stagnation in our lives leads us into the false sense of security or sense of control. There is so very little in this life that is constant except change. This has been the reality of my family’s life since arriving here.
My parents visited during my first weekend here in Phoenix. Their drive over resulted in an overheated car, driving most of the way without air conditioning, my mother becoming overheated and being taken to the ER. Their car needed $4600 in repairs. Ended up gifting one of our cars to them and purchasing another car for me. Yeah…that was not planned.
This past weekend, John (my spouse), drove up to Utah to visit our youngest child, Oliver. He was in a behavioral school to deal with years of foster care and abandonment issues. The visit was going well, until I opened the mail Saturday night to find out that unbeknownst to us, Oliver’s Medicaid had been transferred to Arizona.
The facility does not have a contract with Arizona Medicaid. John left Sunday morning with our child in tow. Now to figure out how to navigate the Medicaid system here in Arizona. Yeah…that was not planned. In the last week, we found out that John was sought out by his employer to fill a position in Phoenix. We had hoped to have something by the end of the
year, so we could live as a family and not commute back and forth to Las Vegas. He starts his new job on August 1 here in Phoenix. Yeah…that was not planned.
Wendell Berry’s quote sums up perfectly the reality of each of our lives. We do not

get to live the life we planned, but the life we have been given. Or if we look at the Prophet Jeremiah we hear, “For surely I know the plans I have for you, says the Lord, plans for your welfare and not for harm, to give you a future with hope.” (29.11) Some people interpret this as saying God has our lives laid out and both the good and bad are a result of God’s planning. But Jeremiah goes on to say that if we call out to God, if we pray to God, if we seek God, we will find the life and hope (God’s desire) filling us. We are called not to a people of perfect planning, but to a perfect hope.
I look forward to our journey together. We will still plan our ministry as best we can…but let us not lose sight of what God, through Jeremiah, has called us to be: A people with a Plan A, not afraid of Plan B, and, if necessary, never losing hope in Plan C.

tember and through October, is going to look at biblical folks who, in today's world, would provide indispensable help to us if they were to journey along side us. As John Wesley wrote, "No one can be a Christian alone." There will be more information about this series in the next Koinonia.
The Book of Revelation has baffled, terri-fied, and in some cases been ignored because of the imagery. This study will be using the book Revelation by William C. Pender from the Interpretation Bible Studies series. The cost of the book is $11.00. If you need help covering the cost of the book, please let Pas-tor Michael know.
The study will begin Wednesday, September 5 at 10:00 AM at Caribou Coffee located at 2080 West Northern Avenue, west of 19th Avenue. If you are planning on joining us for this study, please RSVP to Mike G. in the church office.

Faith Lunch Bunch News By LaVonna Goudie
Calling all hungry people who like to eat!
The Faith Lunch Bunch meets once a month on the third Thursday of each month to enjoy a time of eating out and catching up with friends. In July 12 folks met at Cracker Barrel in Peoria for a fun and filling meal with fellowship and shop-ping. We welcomed Pastor Michael as we were able to spend some fun time over an appetizing lunch.
For August, we decided to head for the Black Bear Diner at 6039 W. Bell Rd. on 8/16 at 11:30 AM for our next time together. They have hearty servings so plan to share or have leftovers to take home! And if you have an August birth-day, we’ll be sure to sing “Happy Birthday” to you!
John and Carol Getting and their children invite Faith's congregation to join them during Fellowship time to help them celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary. It will be held in the Koinonia Room following morning worship on Sunday, August 12, 2018.
Your presence will be your gift, none other is needed.
Congratulations, Carol & John Getting!

Faith Friends: As you Recently while perusing the Facebook UMC Deacon’s
Page, I came across a video of Justin Hancock, a Deacon in the North Texas conference, preaching at the Eastern Pennsylvania An-nual Conference. As an ordained deacon, Justin serves the world through his missions in the disability community. He works at the Missional Wisdom Foundation (MWF) - a non-profit in Texas that “experiments with and teaches about alternative forms of Christian community.” https://www.missionalwisdom.com/
From the WMF’s mission statement:
“Through thoughtful intentionality and a willingness to learn through trying, the MWF provides space, resources, and support to those seeking ways to ex-plore new paradigms for the deep work of developing spiritual community.”
Deacon Justin serves in The Julian Way, a ministry of the MWF that focuses on developing intentional Christian community centered around those with disabilities. This ministry’s goal is
“to develop an empowered community of discipleship in which disability is not viewed as a hindrance or something to be overcome. All forms of disability are em-braced as expressions of God’s wonderful creativity and vast diversity at work. The MWF strives to create community where disabled and non-disabled persons can work side-by-side and discover and cultivate the gifts that each person embodies.”
Deacon Justin lives with cerebral palsy, which is evident when you meet him. Justin refuses, however, to be a recipient of anyone’s sympathy. Through his ministries of advocacy for those with disabilities, Justin celebrates his ministry as someone with disabilities who has been indeed called by God to serve the church and her people - not in spite of his disabilities, but through his disabilities. He brings hope and reconciliation between the church and those who are differently abled. He also represents the inclusion and diversity that the church seeks in its leadership.
Justin believes in inclusion for all people and of all differences - differences of race & ethnic-ity, gender identity, sexual orientation, and disability. In his sermon he declares:” We are the body of Christ, which means we must be a church that receives as many people as we can hold…If we are the body of Christ, then we need all sorts of body parts… “When we become the body of the Christ and we are interdependent on one another - we cannot separate ourselves. We see the earthly body as a vessel for God’s glory.”
The mission of Faith UMC is as follows: “Faith United Methodist Church” is an inclusive Christian congregation dedicated to the care of its constituents in order to serve the local com-
munity; and in cooperating with other faith-based organizations to reach out to all per-sonal who seek personal acceptance, re-quire sustaining assistance, or yearn for a

meaningful life purpose beyond self. (regardless of age, disability, ethnicity, gender identity, race or sexual orientation.”
Our fulfillment of our mission is evident in our Faith UM church family - people who are differently-abled, the homeless, the LGBTQIA community - all are treated as equals and differ-ences are celebrated rather than just merely accepted or tolerated. As we know, however, this is not the case throughout the Christian community or even our own conference and denomi-nation. There are many prime examples where the UMC has become a church of exclusion ra-ther than inclusion. A way to practice intentional inclusion is through our missions and minis-tries in our church. As we look forward to the future of our church, conference, and denomina-tion, it is my hope that we continue to seek ways in which Faith UMC, the Desert Southwest Conference, and the United Methodist Church can represent the world and, through doing so, we more fully represent the body of Christ.
In Christ’s service,
Pastor Joshua Rev. Joshua L Warner, M.Ed. M.Div. Cell # 602-790-1154

The 2018 Sadao Watanabe calendar has re-placed the 2017 version hanging in the hallway to the Koinonia Room. The 1987 print depicts “Doubting Thomas”. Watanabe, an in-ternationally known Japa-nese printmaker, is famous for his biblical prints ren-dered in the mingei (folk art) tradition of Japan.

Thank You and Many Blessings From Pastor Jody and David Dear Friends,
Thank you so very much for the wonderful celebration of our ministry at Faith UMC. We will never forget the wonderful song composed by Gary and Jane and lovingly (!) performed by our own Faith Musicians!! We are also very grateful for the cards and notes, the monetary gift, and the quilt with all of your messages, which we will look forward to reading once the quilt is delivered to us. Your thoughtfulness and your love shone through in true Faith UMC style!
We have felt very blessed to be a part of this congregation, and while our time at Faith has come to an end, we will always remember all the great times we had doing God's work in this community together. We also know that under Pastor Michael's leadership, Faith UMC will continue to grow and thrive.
So thank you once again for all the great memories, your positive thoughts, and most of all, your prayers as we make our way east to Song of Life UMC in Queen Creek.
God bless,
PPastor Jody and David Topping

The Koinonia is a monthly publication from Faith United Methodist Church. Its purpose is to provide items of interest and information about events and people related to the ministry of the church locally, district-wide and in the conference.
Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.
John 6:35 (NIV)
