PLEASE NOTE!

All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments.

Page 4: Fairmont Focus 26: 20 August 2015

All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test, a relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed is also required.

Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department.

Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be required.

5) ACCOUNTING : ANNUAL OLYMPIAD

Four of our accounting Matrics who participated in the Annual Olympiad at Spine Road High School last Saturday, finished in 7th place out of 35 schools. They were very disappointed not to finish in the top 3 positions, but it was still a great achievement to have reached this position amongst the top schools.

The highlight for the learners was the fact that Premier Mrs Helen Zille attended and opened the prestigious event. The learners were: Willan Adonis, Jade Rautenbach, Kayla Heinrich and Laura Putter.

6) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE

THE LIGHT BEHIND THE WINDOW

by Lucinda Riley

THE PRESENT

Emilie de la Martinières as always fought against her aristocratic background but, after the death of her glamourous, distant mother, she finds herself alone in the world and sole inheritor of her grand childhood home in the south of France. An old notebook of poems leads her in search of the mysterious and beautiful Sophia, whose tragic love affair changed the course of her family history. As Emilie unravels the story, she too embarks on her own journey of discovery, realising that the château may provide clues to her own difficult past and finally unlock the future.

THE PAST

London 1943. A young office clerk, Constance Carruthers, is drafted into the SOE, arriving in occupied Paris during the climax of the conflict. Separated from her contact in her very first hours in France, she stumbles into the heart of a wealthy family who are caught up in a deadly game of secrets and lies. Forced to surrender her identity and all ties to her homeland and her beloved husband, Constance finds herself drawn into a complex web of deception , the repercussions of which will affect generations to come.

8) FAIRMONT FOUNDERS DAY 2015

To all fellow Monties, past and present, on Saturday, 5 September 2015 we will be celebrating Fairmont Founders Day 2015 with a full programme of Sport Events and family friendly activities.

The full programme will be sent out closer to the Event, but in summary the following games have been scheduled:

3 past pupil’s Men’s Hockey on Astro, starting at 08h30.

1 past pupil’s Ladies Hockey on Astro

1 past pupil’s Men’s Soccer

1 past pupil’s Ladies Soccer

1 past pupil’s Ladies Netball

2 or 3 past pupil’s Rugby

There will be a jumping castle for the kids with adult supervision and assistance from current Fairmont pupils.

Food and beverages will be available (complimentary toasted sandwiches), and Cafe Monty will be open for the event.

No alcohol may be sold on the premises, but you are welcome to bring your own beverages in a cooler box.

Mr & Mrs Wigg will be attending the function.

Mr Dingley, Fairmont’s Principal, is hoping to showcase the Aquatic Centre (still under construction) on an informal basis as it is currently a Construction Site and may not be safe to arrange a viewing of the Complex.

If the weather is inclement, the jumping castle will be moved indoors and the sport will go ahead as planned.

There are no costs involved in the abovementioned Founders Day Event.

Many thanks

Barry Chedburn Member of Fairmont Past Pupils’ Association

9) GIRLS’ 1ST SOCCER TEAM

Page 16: Fairmont Focus 26: 20 August 2015

On the 6 August, the 1st Girls’ soccer team participated in the S.L.I.M cup held at Deutsche Schule Kapstadt (German International School). A total of 6 matches were played and a total of 25 goals were scored. Our top goal scorers for this tournament were:

Shannon Mills 7 goals

Naemi Frenzel 6 goals

Nina Dunleavy 5 goals

The girls played very intense games with great discipline, commitment and teamwork allowing them to advance to the semi–finals where we met Buren.

Buren played well, but the Fairmont ladies demonstrated some great skills to advance to the finals where we met Herzlia.

Thank you to Eskom, the final was played in the dark but Fairmont didn’t let that interfere or affect their game. Fairmont scored three quick goals and didn’t allow Herzlia any chances.

Fairmont won the final 3 : 0.

Well done Ladies with yet another excellent achievement!! We are really proud of you.
