1) ACADEMICS

Academic consultative meetings with parents and teachers takes place next week and we strongly urge parents to make bookings for these evenings as soon as possible.

Details and a booking form were enclosed with the first term report.

URGENT NOTICE FOR ALL PUPILS

NO pupils will be allowed to go home early on any day or after a test without a written letter from the parent requesting this. No emails!

Permission for going home early will only be allowed for emergencies.

If a pupil is too sick to stay for the full day after a test, then they must not come to school to write, but must provide the school with a medical certificate.

PLEASE NOTE!

All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments.

All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test, a relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed is also required.

Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department.

Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be required.

3) WINTER UNIFORM

Double fleece knee blankets

Those pupils who opt to bring a knee blanket to school during the cold winter periods will need to use the double fleece knee blanket obtainable from the School Shop. This item is part of the official school uniform and as such no other blankets are acceptable. We kindly ask parents to assist with this request.

Please note that the official change-over to the winter uniform will take place on Tuesday, 28 April 2015.

Pupils may wear either summer or winter uniforms, but may not inter-mix summer and winter uniforms.

The winter uniform requirements are as follows:

Dark brown blazer with Fairmont badge (compulsory)

White long-sleeved collared shirt with tie

Tie – official school tie

Brown chino longs with embroidered badge and brown anklet socks, or shorts with embroided badge and long brown socks

THE MATRIC EXPERIENCE EXPO 2015

Last year saw the Parent Forum embarking on a new fundraising venture in the form of a Matric Dance Expo.

This year we are planning on doing things on a much larger scale!

The Matric Experience Expo will take place from the 21st to the 24th of May in the Tygervalley Shopping Centre and will focus on all aspects of the Matric learner, including the Matric Dance, the Plett Rage, Tertiary Education, Study Loans and Bursaries, Driver’s Licences etc.

Cream Events Library and a group of very dedicated Fairmont moms are working furiously at contacting prospective exhibitors, and offering them the opportunity to be a part of this exciting event!

A BIG thank you to Anna Conradie, Barbara Sithole and Di Pretorius for their hard work and commitment.

We will once again be appealing to the public to donate any unwanted eveningwear, make-up, jewellery, shoes, etc. to the Princess Project, a charity that provides these items to those less fortunate, and who cannot afford the costs involved with a matric dance.

If you’re doing any cupboard cleaning before winter, please remember to keep these items aside and bring them to the expo at Tygervalley!

FAIRMONT PARENT FORUM EXEC : APRIL 2015

Tanya Burness, who has been serving as the Chair of the Parent Forum, was elected onto the School Governing Body in March 2015, responsible for various portfolios. It is for these reasons that she has stepped down as Chairperson of the Parent Forum, although she will continue to support their efforts.

She is replaced by Audrey Dolpire who is a past Chair of the Parent Forum. Congratulations and thanks to Audrey for taking on this role. The other Executive positions remain unchanged: Ian Dunleavy as Vice-Chair, Colleen Wilson as Secretary and Liza May as Treasurer.

Our Drummies will be competing in their First Large Drill Competition of the season on Saturday, 18 April 2015 at JG Meiring High School in Goodwood. The competition starts at 10h00 with the Primary School section, and the High School section starts at 13h00.

Our Drummies will be marching first at 13h00 and would very much like the support of their school. Come and watch the drummies perform their newly choreographed display!

7) HOCKEY REPORT

All hockey players are reminded to regularly check the hockey notice board. All training schedules for all teams have been placed there.

EASTER HOCKEY CO-ED TOURNAMENT

Congratulations to our Girls’ 1st team for winning the Plate Final, and our Boys’ 1st team for coming 3rd in the Fairmont Co-Ed Easter Hockey Tournament. There were 16 boys’ and 16 girls’ schools who took part. This is the biggest Co-Ed Hockey Tournament in South Africa. Well Done to Mr Elgie and his team for running a very successful tournament.

Special mention must go out to our U16A Girls’ for a great effort at the Fairmont Tournament where they played against U19 teams. Our U16A girls’ even managed to pull off draws against St Cyprian's and Settlers 1st Teams.

During the April break, the U16A Hockey Boys participated in the Rondebosch Hockey Festival.

The results were as follows:

This was a great festival, and extremely well organised. The boys enjoyed the 4 days of hockey and building of new friendships.

U14A BOYS’ & U14A GIRLS’ HOCKEY TOURNAMENT - OUTENIQUA (GEORGE)

Our U14A Boys’ and U14A Girls’ Hockey Teams headed off to Outeniqua in George where they played a total of 7 games. Both teams did extremely well and had lots of fun on tour. Both teams ended up coming 3rd, and our girls won their 3/4 playoff on showdowns.

HOLLAND HOCKEY TOUR REPORT

Tour report from the 1st Team captain

Dear Holland / Belgium

It began with a group of 30 young adults, training relentlessly and putting in the hard hours. With morning and afternoon practice, twice a week, one would wonder whether it was worth it?

FINALLY the time had come to depart the Mother City and travel to the desired destination. The uncertainty and excitement was evident by everyone on tour.

The senior lads lead the pack, welcoming all the juniors with open arms. One cannot forget about the coach and management – without order and guidance, how can a team achieve its goals.

And so hockey began… I, Erin Lombard, being privileged to captain this wonderful bunch of boys, took the lead and guided the team through the entire tour and to victory.

The weather was so cold. There was always a constant cold wind that blew until it felt like your fingers were about to fall off when hitting the hockey ball.

One of the biggest highlights was Snow World - an indoor facility where you can snowboard and ski. For many of us this was a first time experience and very cold, but definitely a memorable 3 hours. We ended the experience with tube races down the steep slopes.

Winning 6 of the 7 games was an admirable achievement.

A well planned game plan won us our games. The players were hungry for the wins, showing admirable and dedicated sportsmanship.

The team bonded on and off the field and this was a powerful motivation for the team, before and after the game. Before every game, I would quote a motivational saying, reminding the players to strive for success.

I learnt from this tour that no matter who you are and what you think you know, is not enough. We are small pieces in the puzzle. It’s what you do to make yourself stand out and to show a positive attitude in everything you do. I also learnt that sport is a necessary aspect that all should take part in. It builds friendships and gives one foreverlasting memories. It was difficult at times to lead this group of young guys, but it strengthened me into becoming a better leader, and keeping Fairmont’s name in high regard.

4th ANNUAL EASTER TOURNAMENT

The 4th annual Fairmont/Durbanville 4th annual April Tournament was a resounding success for boys’ and girls’ hockey, thanks to the time and effort made by the Hockey staff and to the Principal, Mr Dingley, the ground staff, Mr Carl Strydom, George (security), Tuckshop (little Monty), the boys’ and girls’ parents and the organisers Mr Elgie and Mr Dino.

All the teams which took part coming from Gauteng, Durban, the Boland and Cape Town, agreed that the organisation and what the tournament has to offer, meant that they all intend to take part again next year.

8) WON LIFE : VOLUNTEER AT OUR LITERACY CENTRE

The Literacy Centre, run in Fisantekraal, is a volunteer-driven organization that relies on willing members of the public to volunteer their time reading with those learners eager to learn this very important milestone.

With each volunteer, Won Life is able to extend their reach and really make a difference in the community of Fisantekraal. If you can spare an hour or two each week, please email Won Life on:

WATCH ME DISAPPEAR

Will the past yield to its secrets if we search our memories hard enough? And where does the line fall between normal desire and something altogether murkier?

For Tina Humber, these questions become pressing when she returns for a family wedding to the Fenland village of her youth, where her best friend disappeared when they were ten. And the more Tina replays events and relives her tempestuous upbringing, the more she believes she has worked out what happened – and who was responsible.

Set against the backdrop of the waterlogged Fens, this novel captures the mysteries of childhood, and that volatile stage when girls become aware of their attractions, but do not grasp the dangers.

Tristan Hamilton Gr. 12

Tristan won the Glacier Steenberg Title last week upon his return from playing Nationals in Bloemfontein. This means he is through to the Glacier National Finals in October for a 2nd year in a row.

This Glacier National Final is the tournament that Tristan has been working hard towards and hopes to win this year.

15) PRINCIPAL

This term has commenced at a very busy pace and that represents what we are all about at Fairmont. The next few weeks present opportunities for fun, togetherness and perhaps good opportunities for our pupils to prepare themselves for the forthcoming examinations. “What to Learn” for these exams will be published on Monday next week to enable parents and their children to plan ahead for a study programme to accommodate their planning for these exams.

I wish all our sport teams success for their weekend fixtures, and a happy weekend to our Fairmont families.
