START CHASING THE PASSION.”
by Tony Hsieh
Julia Masureik won the grade 11 Visual Art in the Tygerberg Eisteddfod. She received a 100% for her artwork and a trophy at the Awards evening held on Tuesday,
25 August at the Tygerberg Art Centre.
1) ACADEMICS
Our matrics commenced their Trial Examinations today and will continue to write for the next three weeks.
Our major focus is to offer our support for the Grade 12’s, to ensure their comfort, and offer the best writing condition that we can.
I ask parents to please support our efforts to ensure that the matrics are on time to write their papers, and that they continue to abide by the schools’ Dress Code and Code of Conduct.
CLOSING TIMES
Due to our Staff Development Programme, the closing times for the following 2 dates are:
Friday, 4 September 13h40
Friday, 18 September 13h30
MATRIC INVIGILATORS
The matrics wrote the first of their prelim exams last Friday, English Paper 3.
Mrs de Ridder and Mrs Behrendt were kind enough to ensure that the hard working educators invigilating the exams were replenished with a snack and water.
A lovely thought knowing the educators look out for one another.

PLEASE NOTE!
All pupils are required to be at school at the regular time - 07h55 - even if they are not writing a test. This time will be used for consolidation or tasks organized by various subject departments.
All parents are asked to please be aware that when your child misses a Monday or a Thursday test, a relevant chemist slip (the date on the slip must pertain to the pupil’s absenteeism and medication bought), a certificate from the clinic or a doctor’s certificate is required. A medical certificate from either the clinic or the doctor is applicable for missing any exam. A note from you excusing your child from school for the days missed is also required.
Grade 9 and Matric pupils must produce a doctor’s certificate for tests and exams missed as these are the two exit phases and their marks are externally moderated by the Education Department.
Learners are not allowed to go home immediately after a test if they are ill. They have to stay until first break. If they are ill, then they should not come to school. A doctor’s certificate will be required.

9) FAIRMONT DRUMMIES
20 August 2015
Dear Karen & Drummies
The Forum would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude and thanks for yet another fabulous event, One to One Day. Each year seems to just get better and better, and we are so delighted to be able to partner with you in this initiative, and to see the joy and excitement it brings to so many people.
We are constantly amazed by the willingness, enthusiasm and generosity
shown by the entertainers each year, despite the challenges brought about by the change of venue and late confirmation of the venue this year. The Fairmont drummies are always a highlight for the participants!
As you know, the Forum invites all the participants from our member centres and co-ordinates their volunteers, as well as coordinating transport requests for those facilities requiring transport.
This is a major undertaking, but always rewarding for us to see the delight on the
faces of those invited guests for whom this is such a special day.
Thank you for enriching the lives of more than 2,800 of our members who joined us on One-to-One Day.
Kind regards
Felicity Dreyer ADMINISTRATOR

10) E-GAMING CLUB
Last weekend Fairmont hosted the 20th MWEB Western Cape LAN Championships for eSports. It was a 2-day event, starting early Saturday morning and ending late Sunday evening at 20h00. It was a very successful event with approximately 100 school learners from across the province.
Saturday results:
League of Legends: Fairmont finished 2nd. They qualify for national team trials later this year. If they are successful, they have the chance to go on an all-expenses paid trip to the World Championships in South Korea.
Members of this team: Daniel Tang, Mingu Kang, Nicholas Mortlock and Jayden Gillman.
Our league of Legends team 2014 also received their National Colours and will play an online test match against Austria later this year.
The members who received their National colours: Seung Ju Lee, Seug Ju Min, Mingu Kang, Nicholas Mortlock and Eric Larsen
Brazilian Checkers: Ms Bosch from Fairmont High School remained undefeated and she received Provincial Colours.
Ms Bosch has been selected to represent South Africa at the World Draughts – 64 Championship 2015 in Russia, from 2 - 11 October, all expenses paid. The prize money for this event is $64,000 US. Good luck, Ms Bosch.
Morabaraba: Mrs Crouse from Fairmont remained undefeated and received Provincial Colours.
She also qualified to participate in the national team trials happening later this year.
Sunday:
Dota: After a very tense tournament, our 2nd team finally beat the 1st team, Dota, with 5 seconds to spare. In doing so, they finished 3rd overall against very strong competition. They received their provincial colours and therefore qualify for National team trials later this year.
The 2nd Team Dota also finished 3rd overall nationally, and are currently ranked 3rd in South Africa.
The team that played was Ehber Burger, Nicholas de Lange, James Vermeulen, Phillip Harrison, and .Michael Middleton
Track mania Nations
Zander Fritz was crowned champion and received his Provincial colours.
Fifa 15: Andrew Reeve won the competition on Xbox, but then there were some complaints from the PlayStation players that it is unfair because they are not used to the Xbox controls. The tourna-ment was then played on the Xbox and Play-Station. After collating the results from the Xbox and PlayStation leg, Andrew Reeve was crowned the Western Province champ overall against some very tough competition.
Andrew who is currently a Grade 9 learner, competed against players 20 years and over. This is a wonderful achievement for Andrew, and we wish him luck at the national team trials later this year.
Counterstrike: Our Counterstrike team finished 2nd overall. They also qualify for national trials next year.
Well done to each learner who participated at the championships. E-sports is a fast developing sport at Fairmont and was only introduced at the beginning of this year. Our learners have proven to be very successful in their competitions.
A special thanks goes out to Thomas de Lange, the team manager, for keeping everything running smoothly.
Our 3rd Dota team that consist of Grade 8’s have improved a lot this year and we are looking forward to what these learners will be able to achieve once they reach matric.
11) FESTIVAL CANCELLATION 2015
Festival Cancellation 2015
FAIRMONT FESTIVAL
SATURDAY, 31 OCTOBER 2015
Sadly due to the high costs of such an event and the lack of financial sponsorship, we have had to cancel the Festival for this year.
We are striving to bring it back in 2016 and need your support to raise enough funds to cover the costs. Any parents willing to get involved in raising sponsorships are encouraged to come and work with us on this venture. Your support will be appreciated.
Please contact Audrey Dolpire on 083 629 7919, email: [email protected] or Ian Dunleavy on 082 990 2679, email: [email protected]

15) LIBRARIAN’S CHOICE
PAPER TOWNS by JOHN GREEN
The thing about Margo Roth Spiegelman is that really all I could ever do was let her talk; and then when she stopped talking, encourage her to go on due to the fact that:
1. I was incontestably in love with her;
2. She was absolutely unprecedented in every way; and
3. She never really asked me any questions.
Quentin Jacobson has always loved Margo from afar so when she climbs through his window to summon him on an all-night road trip of revenge, he cannot help but follow. But the next morning, Q turns up at school and Margo doesn’t. She’s left clues to her disappearance, like a trail of breadcrumbs for Q to follow.
And everything leads to one unavoidable question:
WHO IS THE REAL MARGO?

No alcohol may be sold on the premises, but you are welcome to bring your own beverages in a cooler box.
Mr & Mrs Wigg will be attending the function.
Mr Dingley, Fairmont’s Principal, is hoping to showcase the Aquatic Centre (still under construction) on an informal basis as it is currently a Construction Site and may not be safe to arrange a viewing of the Complex.
If the weather is inclement, the jumping castle will be moved indoors and the sport will go ahead as planned.
There are no costs involved in the abovementioned Founders Day Event.
