FIFTH SUNDAY OF EASTER APRIL 29, 2018 Dear Parishioners,

Every week, Fr. Vordtriede, Fr. Burkemper and I make it a point on Sundays of welcoming visitors and guests to Holy In-fant Church. Parishioners are probably unaware of how many visitors we have with us every weekend. Some mes, they are parishioners from neighboring parishes who find a Mass me convenient, or they might be grandparents of one of our Holy Infant students in town checking up on family members.

Some of the "newbies" are just that, folks new to the neigh-borhood and the parish. So many of these are younger folks, o en enough couples expec ng their first child or those just having welcomed a new baby to their families. I spot them on their way out of church, welcome them and try to get their names. I am always wondering if any in the congrega on, the "regulars", if you will, have also reached out to those who are with us for the first me. It is hard in any situa on to break into a new group, and it can be especially difficult in a parish where many of us have known each other for many years. It is quite natural enough to gravitate to those we already know, but the research has shown that unless new prospec ve mem-bers are recognized and welcomed, it is far less likely that they will be back.

So, I encourage all of our parishioners to put on a nametag this weekend and extend a warm welcome to those you don't know. Even if someone has been coming to church here for awhile, they don't mind being acknowledged. A er all of our Sunday Masses, all are invited to coffee and donuts in our Up-per Cafeteria. I would ask everyone to introduce themselves to someone they haven't met or whose names they don't know. Hospitality is so important; it might just be one of the more important of all Chris an virtues.

Also, this weekend is the kickoff for the Annual Catholic Appeal (A.C.A.) for the Archdiocese of St. Louis. Recently, many of you received a le er from Archbishop Carlson asking for your con-tribu on to this great cause. No ma er the size of your gi , it

will be used across the Archdiocese for many wonderful agencies and causes.

One of those agencies is the Sts. Joachim & Ann Care Center. This agency is the largest social service provider for individuals, fami-lies and children in the tri-county area of St. Charles, Lincoln and Warren. Their mo o is “plan ng the seed of hope, breaking the chain of despair.” Last year, the Annual Catholic Appeal donated $90,000 to this agency that is in the trenches and helping those suffering especially children, the elderly and the disabled. Please be as generous as you can. Stop by the table today in our Upper Cafeteria and fill out your pledge card.

God’s blessings to you and your family!

Every time the St. Vincent de Paul Society follows its mission, three things come together. One group of peo-ple give of their treasure for the benefit of others. Anoth-er group of people take that treasure and seek out those in need. The prayers of the third group of people are heard and answered by God because it is really the love of God that has been given and received. This is sacred and holy. -Deacon Jim Powers

The Gospel today makes clear once again, that when we are united with Jesus we will bear fruit, pruned of the branches that do not bear fruit. God expects results! Love, in words only, is not sufficient. Deeds must follow. Branches that fail to bear fruit are cut away from the vine. These are not easy words to hear, but important for us to hear, take to heart, and use to grow.

The Annual Catholic Appeal is a reflection of much fruitful activity and tremendous acts of love. Each spring the Catho-lic community invites and encourages everyone to be a part of the Appeal.

This year’s theme, Tell Your Story, features story after story of the fruitful witness of generosity and mercy, sacrifice and charity, love and joy. Be the fruitful branch and consider sharing your gifts with the Appeal. Pledge cards will be available in the Upper Cafeteria after all Masses this week-end and next, May 5-6. Thank you in advance for your support!

Ministry of the Month: Legion of Mary What is the Legion of Mary? The Legion of Mary is a world-wide Catholic lay apostolate associa on of men, wom-en and youth called to serve God and His Church, praying and working with Mary and the Holy Spirit for their own sanc fica on and for the conversion of the world.

We are called legionaries, not because we are conten ous, but because of the struc-ture of our organiza on and because with courage and loyalty, we are a powerful group with a common mission to spread the good news in service of the Church. We are made ready for spiritual warfare. The Legion’s strength is the power to do good rooted in the strong faith of each individual obtained from the storehouse of the Church’s grace. We love Mary and imitate her with our sleeves rolled up.

Started in Ireland in 1921, the Legion of Mary is now worldwide. It presently has a membership of some 3 million ac ve and 15 million auxiliary (praying) members. It is the largest Catholic apostolic organiza on of lay people in the Catholic Church and is rec-ognized by the Holy See as Interna onal Associa on of the Faithful.

The Legion of Mary consists of two totally different memberships, the Ac ve and the Auxiliary members. Both of these are essen al to the legion. Auxiliary members are our prayer warriors. They support the Legion by praying the booklet of legion prayers daily.
