Dear Peter,Thank you kindly for sending me details of the Whitlocks. I regret I'm not yet

on the net so rely on the post. I don't know if Mr. Whitlock from Ilford sent you myletter, but my Grandmother was an Emily Whitlock born at Tugby, Leicestershire, whoseFather William, a sawyer came from Silverstone (pronounced Silsun). I cannot say withcertainty which one at present, some years ago I went to Silverstone and discovered agood many Whitlocks living there.

The timber yard belonging to the Linnells is still there (Cousins). The GreatMidland Forest there supplied timber for the Royal Navy and Williamjoumeyed North toRockingham Forest working as a sawyer where he married Caroline Sculthorpe and laterlived at Tugby.

Traditionally the Whitlocks are School Teachers and according to my late Aunthad Whitlock legs! Tall and solid!Even today I use obsolete Northhamptonshire words inherited from generations past.

The world of Silverstone near to Oxford and Buckingham is well recalled inFlora Thompsons book Lark Rise to Candleford, and by J. E. Linnells book Old Oak theearly history of the Linnells and Whitlocks at Silverstone, Old Oak himself was acharacter who worked in the wood yards, joined the Gypsies in the Wood and laterbecame a CofE Parson. I don't know if he is any connection of course, but do you knowthe famous painting by William Frederick Yeames of the little boy in blue standing on astool being interrogated by Cromwells men, entitled 'When did you last see your Father'.It actually happened in a Yeomans Farm in Cosby, Leicestershire, the young boy is theson ofBulstrode Whitlock. What a wonderful name.

Enough of my ramblings, I enclose some photos for your records if you wouldlike them. One final note, I have lately thought about the melancholic streak that runs inmy family is inherited from the Whitlock genes, that and the legs!
