A message from Portsmouth’s Manager
and OUR SPONSORS
Youʼve made it this far, weʼve arranged it and hope to stage a great FIRST tournament, here in Portsmouth in partnership with the University of
Portsmouth, our hosts, Portsmouth Football in Community and Portsmouth Football Club.
The idea of the Festival of Football, in the first instance stems back to 1994, where having played myself in the Portsmouth Royal Mail Cup and since then acted as a coach to the School of Soccer, I made lifelong friends in Barbara O Connell (Wilton & now Cork City), who in fact was desperate for her daughters to get the same experience and football opportunities this great city could offer.
Jesse and Alix will be players for Wilton FC this year and along with many of the teams locally whose coaches remember themselves, playing in the Royal Mail Cup as kids - dreams can be made, dreams can be achieved, fun can be
had and FOOTBALL can bring us together AND has done.
I would like to welcome you all to the FIRST PORTSMOUTH FESTIVAL OF FOOTBALL and hope at whatever level you are involved in you will do your
part to make this a memorable tournament.
This is a great city with Footballing History.#Playyourpart

In June 2014 year, Portsmouth was selected by Sport England as one of three cities in the running for the coveted title of ‘City of Football’.
The shortlisted cities fought off competition from 22 cities bidding for the title, demonstrating a commitment to uniting public, private and voluntary organisations to do whatever it takes to get more people — particularly those
aged 14-25 years — playing all forms of the grassroots game regularly.
“We’re a football based city, everyone knows how famous PFC fans are for being passionate about their club. Narrowly missing out to the City of Nottingham, SPORT ENGLAND LIKED elements of the bid to give over £160,000 to develop new groups and activities.
As Pompey in the Community push on with only a week or so of their crowdfunding campaign, the organisation have so far raising over £60000 towards the expansion into new facilities next door to their current Anson Road head office.
The charity that has 32 full time members of staff, works with 7000 people each week and delivers over three different counties has been continuously growing and growing in the last couple of years and now the charity finds itself in a situation where demand is outweighing supply.
Thanks to charitable organisation His Church, Pompey in the Community were the grateful recipients of a large food parcel, which is to be distributed in the city and surrounding areas. The food, which
was received thanks to His Church and their associations with a number of large food companies, means that school children can now receive a free bowl of cereal to get them in the right frame of mind to start their day.

It’s a bit frightening to think it’s being 21 years since my first trip to Portsmouth to play in the Royal Mail cup international tournament. Apart from it being my first time away from my family, it was my first time experiencing competition from outside of Cork.
It was 1994 and my team Wilton United from Cork spent a week at the QEQM residency where I got to play against teams from all over the world, got to meet so many new friends and got to experience what it was like to be a
player at an international tournament and WIN IT.
To this day those memories are fresh in my mind and will live with me forever. I can honestly say it was the beginning of a new life for me. It made me fall in love with the game more than ever and it made me friendships for life. I met two people in particular who I kept in contact with on a weekly basis through writing since that year back in 1994. There was no such thing as e mailing or facebook back then. Dave MacAskill and Clare Luddy would be two people who I met back then and both whom I count as great friends of mine. To me, this is what the tournament is all about. I vaguely remember the games we played apart from the finals that we celebrated winning, but I remember the celebration evenings we had at the City’s Guild Hall, where all teams bonded together and for me, this was amazing.Making friendships was as important as playing football.
I spent a few years playing at the tournament until it eventually ended, much to our disappointment. I have some fantastic memories from my years there, some great stories, some of which I couldn’t possible share ha.
21 years on and I never expected to be bringing my children to a place where I have so many great memories from, but I am delighted in doing so.
I have shared so many stories with my children and they are well aware that my Portsmouth days were some of the best days of my life which I shared with my best friends Aisling and Suzanne. Because of these great memories I am thrilled to be bringing my children Jesse and Alix here to play in the tournament. I want them to experience a lot of what I did. I, along with Pat Bowdren (My coach back in 1994) will coach my children’s teams this year in the tournament and we hope the children have a fantastic experience. I’ve no doubt they will.
Since Dave contacted me regarding the tournament, the excitement is building up week by week back in Cork. The excitement of new gear, a trip away, playing different opposition is something the children are really looking forward to. Trips like these can benefit in so many ways. Hopefully it will help us to attract players to our club and hopefully it will help Dave to build the tournament in the next few years. We are grateful for all his hard work to ensure this tournament will go ahead and we are really looking forward to it.

Back in August 2014, on the centenary of Great Britain and the Empire entering the conflict which later became known as the “Great War” and latterly, World War 1, a plaque and memorial wall were unveiled at Fratton Park, home of Portsmouth Football Club. That plaque and the memorial wall commemorate the men of the city of Portsmouth and the surrounding area who rallied to the colours, and joined up to “do their bit for King and Country” in the conflict. The choice of Fratton Park for the location of the memorial marks the fact that Portsmouth FC was involved from the very beginning, Fratton Park being one of the main recruiting centres.
When the war began, on August 4th, 1914, the British Army, although highly trained, well equipped and professional, was tiny compared to the vast armies of Germany, Russia and France, who in terms of sheer manpower outnumbered Britainʼs regular army by a factor of 6 or 7 to one. In order to redress the balance, given these vast differences in numbers of men under arms, a massive national recruitment drive was initiated. Nowhere in the country was this effort more vigorous than in Portsmouth, where, under the auspices of the Lord Mayor, the “ Citizens Patriotic Recruiting Committee for Portsmouth and District” urged men from all around the area to join the “Portsmouth Battalion” as it was first known. The basic premise of the campaign to recruit was the suggestion that it would be a good idea to enlist with your friends, relations, colleagues and workmates. The thinking was that this would quickly create a sense of community and togetherness, enabling men to bond quickly, and forge comradeship and team spirit more easily than if they were thrown together from all parts of the country. As a result of this, some 6,500 men from the Portsmouth area came forward, forming the 14th and 15th battalions of the Hampshire regiment, with a third battalion, the 16th, being a reserve or replacements battalion. Eventually, these became known unofficially as the “Pompey Pals” and after training and preparation, first went into action in September 1916, during the horrors of the Battle of the Somme, and, like so many other units of the British Army engaged in that battle, they suffered fearful casualties. It was during the Battle of the Somme that the basic underlying flaw of the whole idea of the “Pals Battalions” became all too tragically apparent.........it might well be a good idea in principle for men to enlist and serve together, but as the Somme graphically demonstrated, they also died together, as communities all over the country were soon to learn when pals battalions from not only Portsmouth, but Bradford, Leeds, Accrington, Barnsley, Rochdale, London, Manchester and Liverpool, were cut to pieces by German machine guns. Indeed, many of those who fell, were killed in very short order within the first few hours of the battle. So it was that in early 2014, with the approach of the centenary of the outbreak of the war, that small group of history buffs and Pompey fans got together with the aim of remembering those men who formed and served in the Pompey Pals battalions.
Charity links football to the Great WarWe SHOULD remember
The organisers and founders of the Pompey Pals Project all took the view that in the years since the Great war, the idea of the Pals battalion has become synonymous with northern communities like Accrington and Rochdale, who suffered grievous losses which proportionally were much worse than losses sustained by bigger towns and cities like London, Leeds, and Manchester.
It has been overlooked that one of the very first pals battalions was raised here in Portsmouth, in 1914, so the project has set up a charity, registered as the Pompey Pals Project, and in conjunction with Portsmouth FC, have set about commemorating those brave men from our community who enlisted in the first few weeks and months of the war. So much of the recruitment was done at Fratton Park, where recruiting stations were set up, that it seemed highly appropriate that the memorial should be set up there. As already mentioned, this memorial was officially unveiled by Dame Mary Fagan, the Lord Lieutenant of Hampshire, on 4th August 2014.
The Pompey Pals Project, again in conjunction with Portsmouth FC, organised an additional tribute to the Pals, arranging for the clubʼs official kit, worn by the players and fans during season 2014-15 to be a replica of Pompeyʼs 1914 kit, with the added feature of the weave of the shirt incorporating the names of every one of the 1400-plus men of the 14th and 15th battalions, the Pompey Pals, who lost their lives during the great war. Each shirt is, in effect, a War memorial.
The Pompey Pals Project is now working towards setting up and opening a permanent museum within the city, not only to pay tribute to the sacrifices of these men, but also to
commemorate the efforts of the people of the City of Portsmouth during the Great War of 1914-1918.The aim is to eventually provide the city with a lasting tribute to everyone from this area who “did their bit for their country” in times of crisis over the past century or more.
