Introduction Children are at the heart of many services throughout Sheffield. Their involvement in the planning, delivery and evaluation of services affecting them is critical for ensuring a service is efficient and based on actual need Article 12 of the United Nations’ Convention on the Rights of the Child states that,

“Children and young people have a right to express an opinion on any matter affecting them and to have that opinion taken into account”.

This statement is supported in Sheffield through the Sheffield Children and Young People’s Plan and the Sheffield Children and Young People’s Participation Strategy. The Children’s Voices Project is firmly committed to this principle and is leading on consultation and participation work with children in Sheffield. Executive summary Children’s Voices were approached by Derek Moxam, Extended Schools Co-ordinator for the Stocksbridge family of schools, to conduct a consultation project to ascertain pupils’ thoughts and views about after school clubs. Children Voices worked with Malin Bridge Primary and Wisewood Primary school councils to gather the views of all the pupils in the schools. The school councils took part in three sessions which included: Session 1: The school council thought of questions to ask their fellow pupils about after school clubs. Children were then shown some fun and engaging consultation techniques that they could use to ask pupils their questions. Children decided which techniques they would like to use with each question they wanted to ask. Session 2: Children designed and made the consultation activities which they had chosen in session 1. *Between session 2 and 3 children took the consultation techniques around all the classes in the school to gain their responses to the questions* Session 3: Children counted up the results to reveal what the pupils’ views. They then produced feedback posters to take back to their classes to show the rest of the school the outcome of the consultation. The sessions were very successful and not only produced some interesting results but also enabled the school council representatives to build skills in fun and engaging consultation techniques. This report contains results from both schools. A breakdown of each school’s results can be found in the findings section.

Summary • The most popular activities that children would like to do at an after

school club are den making, sports, cooking and arts and crafts.

• Most children would like to have a snack provided for them whilst at the club. Children would also like the opportunity to bring their own snack.

• Most children would like to have cold drinks and something sweet for snack, such as sweets, chocolate, cakes and biscuits.

• 33% of children would like the club to run once a week; however 28% of children would like the club to run every day of the week.

• Most children would like the club to last between 1 ½ hours to 2 ½ hours.

• Children would like friends and family to have the opportunity to come to the club if they wanted

Recommendations • The children’s ideas should be included in the development of any new

after school club

• If the after school club is successfully funded, children should be given the opportunity to evaluate the service against their original requests to make sure they are been taken into consideration

• If the after school club is successfully funded. Consultation should be an on-going process to ensure the club is continuously meeting the needs and wishes of the children attending.

What type of snack? Children then voted on their four favourite questions. The four most popular questions were: 1. What things would you like to do at the club? 2. What snack would you like? 3. How often do you want the club to be? 4. Do you want parents and family to come to the club?

Consultation Techniques Children chose a consultation technique for each of the questions. These were: Question: What things would you like to do at the club? Consultation technique: Suggestion box Outline of activity: Children were given a voting slip which they could write or draw an activity on that they would like to do at the club. Children posted their completed slip into the box. Question: What snack would you like at the club? Consultation technique: Picture voting Outline of activity: Photographs of different snacks were presented to the children. Each child was given a sticker to vote on the snack they would most like at the club. Post-it notes were also provided for the children to add any additional snacks they would like.
