The new settlement follows the recent eviction of about 30 families at the Bokamoso informal settlement near Qwaqwa. About 300 people, mostly youths, gathered last Tuesday with their garden tools at Extension 5, which is known as “Masakeng”, where they allocated the site to them- selves. They told Express EFS that they occupied the land because they were fed up with the municipality that kept them waiting for sites. Bhekimpe Mnguni (32) said they had decided to illegally occupy the sites because they had been leasing housing for a long time. “We need land. We can’t be leasing forever while there is free land in our sight. They kept on changing at the eleventh hour. They told us that they would not give us the sites because they are not finished with the water tank which supplies water to this area,” he said. Mamotlalentwa Mothupi (43) said she had joined the group because she had wanted a piece of land. She has been leasing for three years, paying R300. “I lived in Bethlehem before. Every year they promise to give us the sites but that never happens. So we have decided to do it our own way this time,” she said. Mamsi Mosia (31) said: “They begged us to vote for them but now they have disappeared. We want the sites but they don’t hear our plight. They also have some projects in the area and they don’t want to employ us, saying we receive child grants. Before the election they were preaching job creation for everyone but now that they are back in power they are giving us another story. PHUTHADITJHABA. – TheDepartment of Education in theThabo Mofutsanyana DistrictMunicipality has recentlywrapped up Women’s Month instyle by promoting a healthy lifestyle. The celebration that saw all the

women working in that depart-ment getting involved in fun-walk,aerobics and playing football andnetball was hosted at the TshiyaResource Centre.According to Lineo Molingoana,

the assistant director: Values inEducation, the celebration wasaimed at honouring and remem-bering the role that was played bythe women of 1956 who marchedto the Union Buildings to petitionagainst the pass laws.“We decided to celebrate it in a

different way by exercising. Weare working and most of us don’thave time to go to the gym, so webelieve that what we did todayhas encouraged some to startgoing the local gym,” she said.Molingoana said they invited

the Department of Health to teachthem more about a healthy lifestyle.Busi Tshabalala, the district

director of the Thabo Mofutsanya-na Education Department, saidthey had a chance as women tolook back on what the 1956women had achieved.“We should know our worth. At

times you find someone with avery low self-esteem and in thatway the person cannot do thingsthat would take our countryforward. If those women stand upand fight for freedom, we can stilllook at the current challenges andfight them,” she said.

When asked what the challengesfacing women were, Tshabalalasaid the level of stress was veryhigh.“We should assist them to detox

all the emotional scars and all thestress that they have accumulated.

I don’t want women to go to theCorona Hospital in Bethlehemtime and again. We want them tobe strong,” she said. She said they were also looking

at the way of balancing women’shealth; that was why they had the

employee wellness programme.“We are encouraging them to go

for testing for conditions like highblood pressure and diabetes. Weencourage them to live a balancedlife, which is why we invited thewellness people,” she said.

A NATIONWIDE medical male circumci-sion (MMC) programme that aims tomedically circumcise 4,3 million SouthAfrican men by 2016 could be instrumentalin achieving an Aids-free generation by2030.

Several NGOs aim to roll out MMCprogrammes in the province this month, starting with the Thabo Mofutsanyanadistrict, then Xhariep, Mangaung, FezileDabi and the Lejweleputswa areas.

The rollout will take place under theauspices of the National Department ofHealth and include NGOs, Centre for HIVand Aids Prevention Studies (Chaps), theSouth African Clothing and Textile WorkersUnion (SACTWU) Workers Health Unit andthe New Start initiative of the Society forFamily Health (SFH).

In a presentation in Bloemfonteinrecently an update on national progresswas provided to media and members of themining, construction and transport sectors.

CareWorks, a social-purpose enterprisespecialising in HIV prevention and treat-ment, also unveiled its new web portal,www.MMCinfo.co.za, aimed at keepingstakeholders abreast of current develop-ments and progress.

Dr Gareth Lowndes, prevention pro-grammes director, CareWorks, said therewere 6,4 million HIV positive people inSouth Africa.

“We have 0,7% of the world’s population, but 16% of the global HIV burden.”

Studies backed by the World HealthOrganisation (WHO) in South Africa, Kenyaand Uganda have shown that MMC reducesthe risk of heterosexual infection by 60% inmen with an allied reduction in femaleinfection of 20%.

In 2007 the WHO recognised MMC as aneffective HIV prevention approach and anintegral part of the combination preventionstrategy.

“The Department of Health and itspartners have a high-volume strategy tomeet our target of about three million moremedical circumcisions before the end of2016. More than 1,5 million men (or 35%) ofthe target have undergone voluntarymedical circumcisions,” added Lowndes.

If these targets can be met MMC model-ling studies suggest 860 000 new HIV caseswill be averted by 2050.

Dr Dirk Taljaard, chief executive of

Chaps, told the meeting that the ran-domised study conducted on MMC in SouthAfrica had shown that the procedurereduced the incidence of new HIV infec-tions by between 57% and 72%.

Harry Lake, chief executive of Care-Works, said HIV was “literally killing”South Africa.

“Apart from its human impact it isstrangling the economy,” he said.

“The 2,4 million people on ARTs cost theeconomy R17 billion a year. If we canreduce the number of infections by amillion, we will save R7 billion a year, every year,” he added.

Scaling up MMC for HIV prevention iscost-saving and creates fiscal space in thefuture that otherwise would have beenencumbered by ARV treatment costs.

He noted that the minister of Health, Dr

Aaron Motsoaledi, had set a goal for SouthAfrica to be Aids free by 2030, with 90% ofthe overall population testing to know theirHIV status, as well as 90% of people livingwith HIV on ART and adhering to theirtreatment.

“MMC can help to reach and celebratethe milestone of zero new infections,” hesaid.) See video at www.express-news.co.za.

REV. THEUNIS BOTHA, Chris-tian Democratic Party (CDP)leader:

THE Christian Democratic Party(CDP) is extremely concerned withthe venomous attacks presentlybeing launched against the PublicProtector.

These attacks by the ANC donot only reflect bad judgement butthey may well be illegal, as thePublic Protector enjoys similarprotection as that of judges.

These attacks also clearlyindicate that the ANC has littleregard for constitutional require-ments when it comes to, at allcost, protecting a president. Eventhe constitutional requirement ofparliament to function in atransparent manner in its over-sight role is disregarded.

We call on the ANC to riseabove these bundu tactics, whichis in no way different from thoseused by the EFF.

The CDP believes matters willnot be settled until such times asZuma has had his day in court.

My viewSidwell GudukaExpress Sport Editor

THE first coach to be shown the door inthe Premier Soccer League (PSL) thisseason has been none other than GavinJohnson who joined Supersport Unitedfrom Platinum Stars at the beginning ofthe last term.Johnson was only in charge of the

Tshwane-based outfit for just four matchesin the 2014-’15 campaign. He was sacked for poor results as he had

only managed to win one game out of fourmatches. He had lost the other threefixtures. The writing was on the wall as criticism

continued to mount against Johnson whostruggled to turn around failing Amatsat-santsa’s fortunes. It was only a matter of time, if what the

club’s insiders have been saying wasanything to go by. The pressure had beenbuilding for Johnson after every loss andthere was always discontentment.United’s 1-0 defeat at home against

Mpumalanga Black Aces last Wednesdaywas the last straw for him as he was fireda day later. Now the former Bafana Bafana coach

Gordon Igesund, whose contract with Safaexpired on Sunday, is being linked toJohnson’s job.

The firing, or “amicable separation”– the new term used in football for firingcoaches these days – of Johnson fromUnited was obviously going to set the catamong the pigeons. The ink from Johnson’s story had hardly

dried on the pages when speculation aroseas who was next to bite the dust.A number of names are being bandied

about, but none as much as the embattledAmazulu coach, Craig Rosslee. His namekeeps cropping up whenever this subject israised. After five rounds of fixtures, Rosslee’s

side are sitting at the basement of the logand they remain the only team without aleague win.The Cape Town-born mentor saw

speculation about his future double after a2-0 defeat at the hands of the star-studded

Mamelodi Sundowns this past weekend. So, it looks increasingly like a matter of

“when” rather than “if” Rosslee will walkthe plank.Another coach whose job is not safe, is

none other than Kosta Papic of PSLreturnees Chippa United. People know thatSiviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi is trigger happyand he fires coaches faster than hechanges his underwear.Since the Port Elizabeth outfit were

promoted to the elite league for the firsttime two seasons ago, no less than eightcoaches had been fired by Mpengesi. They were Roger Sikhakhane, Julius

Dube, Ian Palmer, Wilfred Mugeyi, Man-qoba Mngqithi, Farouk Abrahams, MarkHarrison and Vladislav Heric. So, judging by Mpengesi’s insatiable love

for the trigger, Papic should be welladvised to keep his suitcase packed. The Yugoslavian was brought on board

to replace Heric during the off season. Itremains to be seen how long he willoccupy the hot seat before he gets fired aswell.Boebie Solomons is also walking a

tightrope up in Limpopo. Polokwane Cityis placed 15th on the table, just one spotabove Amazulu who are propping up the

log. Only one point separates the twosides.Yes, it is still early in the season, but

club bosses in South Africa are veryimpatient. They want positive resultsalways. The question remains, who will be next

to be shown the door?Your guess is as good as mine.
