Exploration Events
4-H Schedule
The 4-H theme this year is Ticket to Success.
Your challenge is to get as many
exploration tickets for your Ticket to Success
collection as you can.
How do you get Exploration tickets?
Attend workshops, trips and tours.
Save your tickets - a prize will be given to
the 4-Hers in each age division (Clover
Kids, 4th-6th, 7-8th, 9th-12th) with the
most tickets.

registration deadline listed on each page. A few events require additional
information to complete registration. Scholarships are available by
request to pay for registration costs.

Wood Finishing Workshop
Wednesday, June 4
Who: Anyone
What: Learn about staining and painting wood.
What kind of wood needs what stain or paint,
types of paint and stain, how to decide your
project finish.
When: 1:00-2:30pm, Wednesday, June 4th
Where: Location TBA
Cost: $5, includes staining samples board to take home.

Note: Members wishing to help with picnic tables for fair may wish to
attend this workshop to learn your options for finishing your picnic table.

Poultry Project
Who: Anyone
What: Learn how to care for chickens, how to prepare them to show,
and what classes to enter for fair.
When: 6:00-7:00pm, Thursday, June 5th
Where: Hancock County Fairgrounds
Cost: FREE
Sign Up: Preregistration preferred but not
required.
Note: This is in conjunction with picking up market broiler chick
orders. Placing an order for market broilers is not a requirement to
attend the workshop.

Who: 7th-12th graders (grade just completed)
What: Tour Winnebago Industries in Forest City and learn about what
careers can be found at Winnebago and how to prepare for them.
When: 12:30-4:30pm, Friday, June 6th
Where: Leave from & return to the Extension Office in Garner
Cost: FREE

Pets at the Hancock County Fair
Monday, June 9
Who: anyone who might show in 4-H or open Pet show - grades K-12
What: Learn what the judge will ask about your pet and how to prepare
your pet for the pet show
When: 6:00-7:00pm, Monday, June 9th
Where: Britt Public Library
Cost: FREE

Robotics Camp

Who: Any student going into 3rd-7th grade
What: Learn how to build and program robots

Fun Overnight - Make Friends & Memories
Hancock and Winnebago County
Intermediate 4-H Explorations Trip
Monday-Tuesday, June 16-17
Who: 6th, 7th & 8th graders (grade just completed) - Non 4-Hers welcome
What: Tour Science Center of Iowa, eat and play at Incredible Pizza, Sleep
at Blank Park Zoo, tour Iowa Capitol and Terrace Hill (where the governor
lives).
When: 9:00 AM, Monday, June 16th - 5:30 PM, Tuesday, June 17th
Where: Science Center of Iowa, Incredible Pizza, Blank Park Zoo, Iowa
Capitol Building, Terrace Hill.
Cost: $50 per person which includes
transportation, admission to zoo and all tours,
and t-shirt.

Light Up With Electricity
Thursday, June 19
Who: 4th-8th grade (grade just completed)
What: Learn about electricity, how to wire a light bulb, how to make
your own flashlight, how to read a circuit diagram. Make your own
lamp to take home and exhibit at the fair
When: 1:00pm-5:00pm, Thursday, June 19th
Where: Hunt’s Electric, 270 Diagonal St. NE, Britt
Cost: $15, includes materials for
lamp.

Woodworking project
Muffin Mania
Monday, June 23
Who: 4th - 7th graders (grade just complete)
What: Learn and explore what it is that ingredients do when they are
added to your recipe. Discuss alternative recipes for special diet
restrictions. Bake some muffins!
When: 10:00am-4:00pm, Monday, June 23rd
Where: Garner United Methodist Church
Cost: $15 for 4-H members
$20 for Non 4-H members

Health Project
Day as a Doctor
Inside the Hospital
Tuesday or Wednesday, June 24 or 25
Who: K-1st & 2nd-5th grade (grade just completed) Non 4-Hers welcome
What: Spend the Day as a Doctor, tour the hospital, get your own stetho-
scope, dress like a surgeon, see a robot exam, how to lift patients, look at
broken bones, find your lung capacity, and more!
When: K-1st grade - 8:00 am -3:00 pm, Tuesday, June 24
2nd-5th grade - 8:00 am - 3:00 pm, Wednesday, June 25
Where: Hancock County Health System - Britt
Hospital, meet at Main Entrance, Atrium
(South side)
Cost: $10, includes lunch, snacks, and take
home goodies

$15 Challenge Shopping Trip
Monday, June 30
Who: 4th - 12th grade (grade just completed)
What: Take a trip to shop for an outfit at second hand stores, Goodwill
& Salvation Army Store. Learn what to look for when picking out an
outfit.
When: 1:00-5:00pm, Monday, June 30
Where: Leave from & return to Extension
Office, visit Goodwill & Salvation Army Store
in Mason City
Cost: No cost, but be sure to bring up to $15
to purchase your outfit.
Sign Up: Deadline is June 27th, limited to 10 participants
Note: $15 Challenge is a class that you can exhibit in at fair. Learn how
to prepare for that class, how the class is judged, and how you can be
successful. $15 Challenge judging is prior to fair on Monday, July 14th.

What: Tour John Deere dealership, Kanawha Equipment, and trailer
building factory, Kiefer Manufacturing.

Where: Kanawha, carpooling may be available, please specify if you
might need to carpool

What: Make s’mores, go fishing and canoeing, spend the night with
friends in a tent, and more outdoor fun!

The REAL Heroes
Tuesday, July 15
Who: K-3rd grade
What: Meet the heroes behind the scenes. Our local
emergency responders will get you up close and per-
sonal with their equipment. Check out the inside of
an ambulance, shoot a fire hose, and meet Oscar, a
drug detection dog.

What: Visit the Historic Armstrong House, learn about home decorat-
ing techniques from that era, make homemade ice cream, talk about
how elements and principals of design affect building.

Clothing Event Judging
What: Model your clothing selection, $15 challenge, or fashion revue outfit for the
judges. When: 10:00 am - 2:00pm, Monday, July 14th (schedule 15 min. session)
Where: Hancock County Extension Office
Who: Any 4-Her who would like to purchase or sew an outfit and be judged on how
they selected the outfit and how it fits. Clothing Event also does a style show at the
fair on Saturday, July 26th at 3:00pm.
