Which Social class applies to this description?

In Sociology we have learnt about a group of people who are cut off from mainstream society. They are a class apart.

They have their own lifestyle and values and they pass their values down to

their children. You will rarely see their children in your local school.

They live on the margins of society in ‘no go’ areas. They often hit the headlines for deviant activity such as drug misuse.

Their families are often broken up and they have a high divorce rate.

These people do not seem to understand the rest of society. They are

workshy and lazy.

They rely on others to work so they can sponge off the wealth they create.

They are the rich!

‘The poor are poor because the rich are rich’

Page 14: Explaining social class[1]

Viewed social class as being based on two

groups, the ruling class and the working class.

Classification was based on what property a

person owned. The ruling class exploited the

working class to get richer.

Viewed social class as having many groups

based on salaries and statuses.

Viewed social class as based on talent. With

many different groups a reflection of the effort

and rewards for working hard or not. Not

everyone has talent, so this explains inequality in

society.

Karl Marx (1818 – 1883)

Thought capitalist society has 2 main social classes. The bourgeoisie (upper/ ruling class) and the proletariat, (working class).

The wealthy bourgeoisie owned the big business, land and factories. The proletariat owned no property and had to work for the bourgeoisie to survive.

Marx thought the bourgeoisie exploited the proletariat, making them work harder for their wages in the aim of more profits. Marx believed that the bourgeoisie would get wealthier and the proletariat would get poorer but eventually the proletariat would rebel and it would lead to a revolution. Eventually the social classes would disappear and we would all live in a more equal society.

Starter –

The sociologist Karl Marx saw society being based on 2 main

classes, the ruling (upper), class and the working class.

It was based on money making and the ruling class exploited and

mistreated the working class in order to get richer.

Does this happen today?

Page 25: Explaining social class[1]

Key terms

Ascribed status – Your social group or position that is fixed at birth, e.g. Being born a Prince.

Achieved Status – social positions that are earned on the basis of personal talents and merit.

Page 26: Explaining social class[1]

PEOPLE ARE NOT EQUAL

• We all have a status• We are all born with ascribed status, -

Gender, Ethnicity, Age, Social Class• Class can be an ascribed status, we are

born with a class, but we can change it too

• Therefore class is also an achieved status, as well as an ascribed status
