5 years of expanding scientifi c opportunity

Page 2: Expanding Opportunity: Seeding Labs' 5th Anniversary Review

“When you’re a scientist in Africa, you’re isolated from the rest of the world. There’s desire and there’s talent, but that talent often dies out because of a lack

of opportunity and a lack of resources. Seeding Labs is coming at an essential time.”

Dr. Martin Mwangi ThuoAssistant Professor, University of Massachusetts

Our VisionSeeding Labs believes that the ability to contribute to scientifi c progress is a human right. We are committed to helping talented, motivated people everywhere pursue their scientifi c dreams. Only by unleashing all of the world’s scientifi c talent can we tackle emerging diseases, feed our growing population, and effectively protect our planet.

Seeding Labs’ mission is to help talented scientists in developing countries conduct life changing research.

Since 2008 we have been providing scientists in the developing world with the resources they need but often lack access to: repurposed lab equipment, training and a network of colleagues in their fi elds.

I want to thank the community of partners across academia, industry and the public sector who have helped us reach this milestone in our organization’s history and who have joined us to help our colleagues on almost every continent. We invite you to continue working with us to grow this global science movement in the years to come.

Together we will build the movement to create the best equipped, best trained, and most interconnected scientifi c community in history.

Thank you for supporting Seeding Labs in its fi rst fi ve years, and for joining us in our next phase of growth.

Nina Dudnik

Chief Executive Offi cer

I have had the privilege of being a member of Seeding Labs’ Board for the past four years. I have seen the organization evolve from a single individual and an army of volunteers to a staffed organization that has impacted the lives of scientists and burgeoning scientists many miles away.

I think of my involvement with Seeding Labs as an extension of my work to develop laboratories, whether they are bright new spaces in North America or better equipped laboratories in Kenya.

At Facility Logix we develop laboratory facilities for our clients throughout North America that boast the latest in equipment resources. Scientifi c staff rely upon this infrastructure to generate ground-breaking discoveries and products in a reproducible, effi cient, and safe environment.

Researchers in the developing world benefi t directly from the equipment resources that Seeding Labs is able to re-purpose from such US-based donor companies and institutions. Without the resources made available to them by Seeding Labs, these scientists work in limiting conditions that are ineffi cient and often place investigators at risk thereby dampening

the pace of discovery.

Perhaps more importantly, Seeding Labs’ Fellows’ Program has equipped these scientists with an understanding of research methods, grant writing tools, and networks that they can draw upon for collaboration.

From Our Board Chair

Page 5: Expanding Opportunity: Seeding Labs' 5th Anniversary Review

These indirect benefi ts motivate and energize not only the recipients of Seeding Labs’ programs, but serve as economic empowerment tools that will ultimately result in locally-generated science-based solutions to real-world problems.

I look forward to experiencing fi rsthand the enthusiastic reception that equipment and assistance receives when it arrives on our partners’ campuses overseas. After all, spontaneous parades rarely happen when scientifi c equipment arrives in this country!

Seeding Labs’ future is bright and impactful. Working together we can all make science more of a global community, grounded in sustainable values.

Pat Larrabee President, Facility Logix

The opportunity to

Combat Disease Dr. Hector Ricardo Morbidoni

When Dr. Hector Ricardo Morbidoni left the U.S. in 2003 and returned to his home in Argentina, he was faced with a serious obstacle. Funds for research there were as low as $27,000 dollars per lab per year. After several years of post-doctoral training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, he was simply unable to start working.

After receiving Dr. Morbidoni’s application, Seeding Labs supplied him with enough equipment and consumables to help him restart his research while he applied for more

grants. “Ten thousand dollars turned into equipment worth almost sixty thousand dollars,” says Dr. Morbidoni.

With his newly equipped lab, Dr. Morbidoni and his research group were able to develop an affordable test that shortens the diagnosis time for drug-resistant tuberculosis from 40 days to only 4. He has since transferred the vital technology to other public health labs that provide coverage to a population of more than 1,000,000 people – impacting his community on a scale larger than ever anticipated.

The total number of registered pharmacists in Kenya stands at 2,000, but the public and private sector are still in need of at least 6,000 more.

This stark need propelled Dr. Nicholas Gikonyo to start the Department of Pharmacy at Kenyatta University in 2009. He had a thorough multi-year plan for its success. The only thing lacking was basic equipment. “Down here, even getting small things like test tubes is a big challenge,” says Dr. Gikonyo.

In January 2010, Dr. Gikonyo’s fi rst class of pharmacists enrolled. As their fi rst

year began, Seeding Labs sent their department equipment ranging from glassware to a mass spectrometer - enough to fi ll the labs. The fourth class of pharmacy students is now enrolled, building the future of Kenya’s public health system.

The equipment spurs training, but also research self-suffi ciency. “The presence of this equipment has stimulated new horizons of research. Scientists from neighboring universities are visiting us more to see how we can collaborate,” says Dr. Gikonyo.

Page 15: Expanding Opportunity: Seeding Labs' 5th Anniversary Review

At Seeding Labs, we believe equipment is just one ingredient for doing great science. Powerful research is catalyzed by thorough training and by engaging global networks of peers. In the last 5 years we’ve found numerous avenues for bringing scientists together.

Our Fellows Program invites emerging scientifi c leaders to spend several months in the U.S. for intensive training, accelerating them on their paths to becoming standouts in their fi elds. We select early-career scientists from our partner universities with ambitious research goals and a strong sense of leadership. We pair them with mentors sharing the same scientifi c passions, who welcome them into their labs and work with Fellows side-by-side.

Fellows gain invaluable lab research training, bringing new techniques back to their universities to tackle the most pressing issues of their communities. A collaboration with Novartis Institutes for BioMedical Research (NIBR) was invaluable in helping launch the Fellows program. NIBR scientists hosted Fellows in their labs, sharing their skills and knowledge related to drug discovery and clinical development. With partners at other Boston institutions, Fellows have expanded their professional networks, and learned the skills needed to raise the profi le of their research and to become stronger mentors to their students. The end result is a priceless exchange of knowledge, and lasting relationships between U.S. scientists and scientists from around the world.

Malnutrition is a leading cause of child mortality worldwide. Dr. Mildred Nawiri believes she has an achievable solution: medicinal extracts from scarce vegetables to provide ample nutrients to children year-round.

We had already provided Dr. Nawiri’s university with much of the equipment she needed. But as a new professor, she did not yet have independent funding or a large network of collaborators.

Dr. Nawiri spent the summer in the U.S. as one of our 2012 Fellows. She learned new experimental techniques, drafted proposals and met colleagues with aligned research interests. In the year since, she has trained her students on new equipment, received two research grants, published half a dozen articles, and attended two international conferences. Dr. Nawiri’s vision of relieving her community from hunger is becoming a reality.

Program

It is not only scientists in the developing world who can benefi t from a strong global network – everyone can. That is why scientifi c research is becoming more and more of an international endeavor. Our Ambassador program broadens U.S. scientists’ networks and plants the seeds for global collaborations of the future.

Our science Ambassadors are U.S.-based students and professionals eager for the opportunity to share their expertise abroad and to learn more about the priorities and challenges of their global counterparts. Ambassadors visit Seeding Labs partner universities assisting in the setup of equipment and giving training sessions on its maintenance. Ambassadors also conduct workshops on career skills and hold seminars in their fi elds of expertise.

Ambassadors come home with lasting connections to their peers abroad and new perspectives on their careers. They share the unique scientifi c insights they encountered in the developing world with their U.S. colleagues and introduce them to others with shared research interests overseas.

In the face of rapid modernization, toxicologists worldwide are engaged in the fi ght to reverse pollution. Dr. Patrick Allard is part of that movement. But when he stepped off the plane in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia - lying near the equator and more than 7,000 feet above sea level – it was clear to him that local expertise was the best hope for effective local solutions.

Dr. Allard’s belief in local capacity grew as he visited universities in Ethiopia, Djibouti and Kenya, giving presentations to students on the basic principles

underlying toxicology. “It is an incredible chance to not only reach out to students and scientists but to also have a better understanding of the research that they perform and of the unique challenges they face,” Dr. Allard says.

The researchers he met showed an eagerness to collaborate internationally, expand their research, and clean the air and water of their communities. Through his visits, Dr. Allard built crucial bridges between professionals within the fi eld of toxicology, and expanded the Seeding Labs community dramatically.

Institutions are always looking for more ways to be green. We recycle paper, plastic, cans – and yet, somehow, we’ve overlooked lab equipment. The natural turnover of cutting-edge science always results in the accumulation of surplus equipment, driving up storage and waste disposal costs.

Where others see cumbersome excess equipment, we see potential. Seeding Labs offers a unique way of recycling that makes a difference both environmentally and socially.

Donors identify reliable unsold stock or gently used items, and clean and package them for shipping. Seeding Labs handles the rest. Donors receive indemnifi cation, tax deductions and the confi dence that their CSR goals are being reached. Helping to equip developing scientifi c communities, donors also build brand loyalty and create future markets for their products.

Through their donations of laboratory equipment and supplies resarch institutions are able to reach a much broader network of scientists addressing important challenges in their communities. These donations to labs in need are only the beginnings of a strong scientifi c network across the globe.

In July 2011, Thermo Fisher announced a partnership with Seeding Labs as a new element of its corporate social responsibility program. Under the program, Thermo Fisher donated 17 refurbished Thermo Scientifi c NanoDrop 1000 spectrophotometers that customers traded in when they purchased the newer NanoDrop 2000 and NanoDrop 2000c UV-Vis spectrophotometers. Seeding Labs partner labs overseas have been requesting these instruments by name - eager to put such new technology to use in their projects.

The NanoDrop line of microvolume spectrophotometers enables scientists to quickly and easily quantify and assess purity of samples, such as proteins and nucleic acids, and is an essential instrument in any biological lab. NanoDrop instruments were ideal candidates for this program because they are easy to use and require no consumables.

Since this fi rst partnership project with Seeding Labs in 2011, Thermo Fisher has continued to donate equipment and consumables, and also participated in the Seeding Labs Fellows program and Seeding Labs volunteer programs.

“Through the NanoDrop donation program, Thermo Fisher sought to ensure that these instruments continued to serve science across the world. ”

Corporate VolunteeringOur corporate volunteering events bring scientifi c professionals out of their offi ces and labs and give them the opportunity to use their talents in a new way.

Donated equipment and supplies are thoroughly checked for quality, inventoried, and packed with care by those most knowledgeable. Nearly every month, groups of up to 2 dozen volunteers from our corporate partners help to build worldwide science.

“They learn what we do and get familiar with the types of equipment that labs abroad need. As we share success stories with a wider audience, more people are exposed to the fact that great science is happening in places like Ghana, Kenya, the Philippines and Brazil,” says David Qualter, Seeding Labs Operations Manager.

Student ChaptersOur campus chapters are student-led affi liates of Seeding Labs that bring together the next generation of U.S. researchers who believe that great science is a universal language.

Becoming a member of a campus chapter expands students’ knowledge, experience, and networks. Students work together to increase interest in global research on their campuses and visit their peers in the developing world through our Ambassador Program. Involvement with Seeding Labs helps

to put students’ education into the context of a global community of peers, driving social change together.

Gerard Limerick at Rutgers University ex-plains his desire to start a Seeding Labs chapter as a larger part of his career devel-opment. “Seeding Labs allows students to gain insight into how science takes place in other countries. Although this may not correlate directly to one’s own research, it is another thread woven into the tapes-try of a developing scientist that enriches their experience and broadens their glob-al outlook,” says Dr. Limerick.

“I’m not sure that there’s another student-run organization on campus that has the

global reach of Seeding Labs.” Gerard Limerick,

Rutgers Robert Wood Johnson Medical School

Page 28: Expanding Opportunity: Seeding Labs' 5th Anniversary Review

Our vision is of a truly global scientifi c community, a world in which the careers of brilliant researchers in Bogota, Karachi or Mombasa are no more limited than those of their colleagues in London, Tokyo or Boston. Making this vision a reality will mean a revolutionary change in the map of global science.

We’ve taken the fi rst steps towards catalyzing this revolution. We have a three-year plan to expand our operations to the regions of greatest need and increase our capacity to provide equipment and training. We will be opening new regional offi ces to offer assistance and face-to-face support. And we will continue to showcase the accomplishments of our colleagues around the globe.

The next great scientifi c minds are waiting for their opportunities. Seeding Labs will be there.
