ABOUT ECOEMBES

Our motto is ‘the power of collaboration’. Between us all we are helping to minimize the impact of packaging waste on the

environment by giving it a new life and advancing towards a circular economy.

ORIGINSEcoembes was founded in 1996 to provide a response to the requirements derived from Spanish Packaging Law 11/97. This law requires producers to see to the recycling of the packaging waste associated with the goods they put on the market.

Producers, retailers and packaging manufacturers, created Ecoembes as an efficient and collective solution to comply with this responsibility.

ALL TOGETHEREcoembes enables the process that connects citizens, municipalities and companies so, between us all, recycling of packaging is made possible. As a result of public-private collaboration and shared responsibility, today 77% of the waste managed by Ecoembes is recycled. That’s 22 points above the target set by European regulation. Looking to the future, we work to achieve the new objectives set by the European Union.

SOLUTIONEcoembes is a non profit organization that enables the collection and separation of packaging for its recycling and promotes eco-design of packaging. The management formula adopted by Ecoembes is the Collective System of Extended Producer Responsibility, a model through which 95% of packaging waste is managed in Europe.

Twenty years after its foundation, Ecoembes is a solid organization that focuses on Circular Economy, from ecodesign and prevention to recycling of packaging waste.

WITH PRODUCERS AND RETAILERSProducers and retailers sell packaged goods and

finance waste management for recycling.

Ecoembes manages these funds and promotes ecodesign of more sustainable packaging to reduce

its impact on the environment.

Ecoembes audits the tons of domestic packaging waste declared by producers and retailers; 93% of the

tons managed in 2017.

WITH CITIZENS

Responsible citizens, both in their homes and out of home, sort packaging waste and deposit it in

blue and yellow bins.

Ecoembes raises awareness on the importance of sorting packaging waste and promotes

environmental education.

WITH RECYCLING INDUSTRY

Properly sorted and categorized packaging waste, is a valuable source of materials.

Ecoembes ensures that the waste is recycled and turned into new raw materials and handles

the sale of recovered materials.

Ecoembes approves recyclers, improves recycling processes and guarantees the traceability of

100% of the recovered materials.

WITH LOCAL AGENCIES

Ecoembes finances the collection of packaging waste in the yellow and blue bins and advises local governments for constant improvement

of this process.

Ecoembes carries out 14,000 waste characterizations and quality checks. At the

sorting plants, the packaging waste is sorted and recovered for recycling.

Ecoembes trains municipal staff and sorting plant operators and introduces innovative systems to

improve process efficiency.

THE ROLE OF ECOEMBES

Thanks to public-private cooperation Ecoembes coordinates all the actors involved in each phase of the process of recycling

packaging waste.


HOW THE MODEL IS FINANCED

Ecoembes is a non-profit organization. The costs of collection and selection of packaging waste are covered by producers

and retailers, complemented by the sale of recovered materials for recycling.

Through the Green Dot fees, the companies involved in the waste management system cover the costs of the collection and sorting.

The total cost is reduced by the revenue obtained from the sale of recovered materials.
