Introduction

Why did we start the World Entrepreneur Of The Year® program? The answer, quite simply, is that entrepreneurs matter. Entrepreneurs create jobs, and their innovations enrich people’s lives. Their forward-thinking and creativity makes a difference to their communities and to society as a whole. Now in its 13th year, World Entrepreneur Of The Year is a celebration of this important contribution.

Each World Entrepreneur Of The Year finalist has been awarded Entrepreneur Of The Year in his or her home country. This national award was first held 27 years ago in a single American city. Today, the program spans more than 140 cities in more than 50 countries. Its success is a testament to the power the entrepreneurial ideal holds for people worldwide.

The Entrepreneur Of The Year Program is an important way to recognize a group of people who often don’t get the recognition they deserve. Around the world, the award honors the contributions of successful entrepreneurs and serves to:

► Identify entrepreneurial role models for the next generation of business leaders

► Inspire today’s successful entrepreneurs to reach even greater heights

► Foster new entrepreneurial activity and economic growth in participating countries

On Saturday, 8 June, all participating Entrepreneur Of The Year country winners will be recognized for their entrepreneurial achievements and inducted into the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Hall of Fame. Following the induction ceremony, one winner will be announced as the World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2013.

We look forward to seeing you in Monte Carlo as we honor the world’s best entrepreneurs.

Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2012: Dr. James Mwangi, CEO and Managing Director, Equity Bank Limited (Kenya)

Frequently asked questions

What is the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award? The World Entrepreneur Of The Year® Award is now in its 13th year. The program was created by Ernst & Young to recognize the accomplishments of entrepreneurs around the world. It builds on Ernst & Young’s 27 years of success in running Entrepreneur Of The Year Award programs in many countries. In 2013, 49 Entrepreneur Of The Year country winners, representing 47 countries, will be inducted in to the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Hall of Fame and compete for the Ernst & Young World Entrepreneur Of The Year title in Monte Carlo from 6 to 9 June.

What is the difference between the Entrepreneur Of The Year Award and the World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2013 Award? Nominees in each country who are vying for the Entrepreneur Of The Year Award start at a regional level. Regional award winners are announced in several categories. Each regional winner competes for the country’s national Entrepreneur Of The Year Award. Each country Entrepreneur Of The Year winner is eligible to join other country winners to compete for the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award.

When was the program started? The Entrepreneur Of The Year program began in the United States in 1986, and we continue to expand the program internationally.

How many countries are participating in the 2013 World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award? There are 47 countries participating, including Serbia and Uruguay for the first time.

Why did Ernst & Young establish the Entrepreneur Of The Year Program?

We started the program to recognize the world’s most successful and innovative entrepreneurs. By identifying and recognizing the achievements of outstanding entrepreneurs within successful, growing and dynamic businesses, we aim to encourage entrepreneurial activity around the world.

We work with great entrepreneurs at every level of society: fresh thinkers at global corporations, visionaries at pre-IPO firms, and social entrepreneurs working on society’s most pressing problems. We have learned a great deal from these interactions and recognize that entrepreneurialism isn’t about size; it’s about a state of mind. We believe it’s something that all businesses can — and should — embrace. We want to encourage people around the world to think about what it takes to be an entrepreneur and how we can create an environment where innovation and creativity can thrive. The Entrepreneur Of The Year and World Entrepreneur Of The Year programs are a natural extension of this commitment.

Will there be awards given in different categories?

No, but all of the country winners will be recognized for their entrepreneurial achievements and inducted into the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Hall of Fame. Following the induction ceremony, one winner will be announced as the World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2013.

How is the winner selected?

Each member of the World Entrepreneur Of The Year independent judging panel receives a detailed packet of information on each of the country winners shortly in advance of the judging session. After a private meeting of the winners and judges while in Monte Carlo, the panel convenes on Saturday morning to discuss each candidate’s qualifications and to select the World Entrepreneur Of The Year 2013. The winner is announced at the black-tie award ceremony on Saturday evening.

How do you ensure the judging process is unbiased?

As most of the judges are past country winners of the Entrepreneur Of The Year Award, we believe they understand the importance of an unbiased and fair selection process to uphold the integrity of the program. Judges are rotated from year to year to ensure fresh thinking and enthusiasm in the judging process.

Who is on the independent judging panel for the World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award?

The World Entrepreneur Of The Year judging panel is composed primarily of past Entrepreneur Of The Year winners, representing all geographies around the globe and industries from financial to technology to energy and life sciences.

This year, the World Entrepreneur Of The Year judging panel will be chaired by Rodrigo Alonso Herrera Aspra, CEO and Chairman of the Board, S.A.B. de C.V. Rodrigo will facilitate discussions with members of the judging panel to ensure all of the candidates are reviewed and considered for this year's World Entrepreneur Of The Year Award. Full biographies of all judges are available from page 62.

How can companies with vastly different business philosophies and turnover be judged against each other?

The award is given on the basis of six criteria, allowing all country winners an equal opportunity to compete: entrepreneurial spirit; financial performance; strategic direction; innovation; global impact; and personal integrity/influence.

Judging process

World Entrepreneur Of The Year finalists are assessed by an independent panel of judges from around the world, most of whom have previously participated in Entrepreneur Of The Year programs. Ernst & Young personnel are not involved in the judging process.

Judges receive written information on the entrepreneurs representing 47 countries prior to their arrival in Monte Carlo. They will meet with each other and the finalists privately to learn more about their achievements, as well as several times socially throughout the weekend. The candidates are evaluated according to the following set of criteria:

1. Entrepreneurial spirit: sets very high standards for self and business and demonstrates strong leadership skills and an unflinching desire and determination to be successful. Entrepreneur demonstrates perseverance in the face of adversity and overcoming obstacles. Has undergone significant disappointments and learned from those experiences. While the entrepreneur relies on trusted individuals and the team, he or she also shows capacity to be an independent thinker and to take on and manage risks in the face of uncertainty. 2. Financial performance: this is reflected in the strength of the organization’s financial performance. If applicable; the track record in raising finance; the quality of past investments; if public, market performance over the past three years; and the strategies in place for long-term sustainability. 3. Strategic direction: creates and turns business visions into business realities. Builds and rebuilds the teams’ commitment to the common goals. Demonstrates the ability to produce new products, use product innovately and differentiate themselves from their competitors. Demonstrate operational excellence within the organization to optimize structure and processes within the business model. Entrepreneur demonstrates entrepreneurial maturity by building strategic alliances and surrounding himself or herself with talented people — sharing knowledge and empowering individuals, teams, the board and a range of advisers/allies, to ensure success for all. 4. Global (or community) impact: the entrepreneur’s global impact can be measured with either revenue, operational, or influential presence in international markets. Results of their presence in these markets include job creation and improved living economics. Alternatively, if not currently doing business overseas, a strategy and model to expand their presence abroad is under development and shows a high degree of potential. 5. Innovation: the entrepreneur pioneers a new approach/business model in product, culture or processes. The entrepreneur recognizes the business imperative of anticipating and embracing change occurring in the competitive environment through continuous improvement and innovation in all aspects of the business. Entrepreneur creates a culture of innovation within the organization. 6. Personal integrity/influence: living his or her values has earned great respect from staff, competitors, customers, advisers, family and the wider community. A culture of corporate social responsibility within the organization demonstrates a commitment to the highest ethical and quality standards in business activities and operations, resulting in an inclusive and flexible workplace, highly regarded reputation, positive social change, impact on the environment and/or improved quality of life within their community.

Argentina

Globant www.globant.com

Mr. Martín Migoya CEO

Martín Migoya founded software company Globant in 2003 with just US$5,000. His goal was to build a company that would position Argentina as a powerhouse in the Latin American technology industry. Today, Globant is one of Latin America’s leading software providers and serves a largely international client base. It works for some of the world’s biggest companies and exports over 95% of its turnover to the US and England. Among the products and services that it offers are cloud computing, content management systems, data management, digital marketing, e-commerce applications, game design, game testing and mobile applications. It has revenues of US$130m, employs more than 3,200 people and has development centers in the most important cities in Argentina, as well as in Colombia, Uruguay and the US. Globant develops innovative software solutions by capitalizing on emerging technologies and trends. It brings together engineering, design and innovation to achieve software production on a large scale. Outsourcing media platform Global Services named Globant one of the top 10 product-engineering vendors in 2011, while in February 2012, market intelligence firm IDC ranked it among the top 10 vendors for mobile application development. In addition, Globant has been selected as a case study by leading US universities Harvard Business School, MIT Sloan School of Management and Stanford. Martín is a regular panel member at conferences and events around the world. He sits on the boards of several organizations including Endeavor, a movement that supports high-impact entrepreneurs. He has also received numerous awards that recognize his creativity, entrepreneurialism and business success.

Australia

McMillan Shakespeare www.mcms.com.au

Mr. Anthony Podesta Founder Proving that taking risks can often bring rewards, Australian entrepreneur Anthony Podesta staked his family’s home to take his business from a self-employment venture to one of Australia’s top 150 securities exchange-listed companies. In 1989, after spotting a clear gap in the market, Anthony, a former schoolteacher, launched an outsourced salary packaging service in response to the recently introduced Fringe Benefits Tax (FBT) regime in Australia. Recognizing that the FBT, a tax levied on non-cash benefits provided by an employer, could bring significant commercial benefits to businesses and their employees, Anthony built a business that today combines salary packaging services with vehicle leasing and fleet management, as well as financing, insurance and other related services. Along with growing the business, Anthony has helped to shape the legislative landscape in Australia. As a result, some three million employees who work under awards and enterprise agreements are also able to participate in flexible, salary packaging arrangements. Guger Technologies www.gtec.ac

Dr. Christoph Guger Founder and CEO Dr. Günther Edlinger Founder and CEO Medical and electrical engineering company Guger Technologies (g.tec), is a market leader in the field of “brain-computer interface” systems, which provide real-time processing of brain signals, converting them into control and communication signals. Such technology has been responsible for considerable advances in patient care, even allowing paralyzed people to communicate through Twitter by using only their brain signals. G.tec was the brainchild of two post-graduate students, Dr. Christoph Guger and Dr. Günter Edlinger. After finishing their doctorate degrees, they founded g.tec in 1999 to take their research out of the laboratory and into the marketplace with the world’s first system that allowed patients to write and control electronic devices just by thinking — a remarkable innovation. This innovation is also displayed in their approach to their company’s corporate culture, with great value placed on employees working independently as well as in teams, forming flexible groups for specific tasks. With two offices in Austria and another in Spain, the company’s 32 employees are now pushing the boundaries of brain-computer technology. One such innovation is the development of rapid functional brain mapping technology, which will improve the creation of miniaturized devices used as patient implants. One key factor in the company’s success has been its participation in European Union research projects. Since 2002, such projects have been an important gateway for building up contacts, networks and partnerships, as well as developing new ideas. G.tec now supplies a wide number of US universities, including Stanford, Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Johns Hopkins, along with well-known companies such as BMW, General Electric, Merck and Nokia.

Belgium

La Lorraine Bakery Group www.lalorraine.be

Mr. Guido Vanherpe CEO Persistence and pride best sum up Guido Vanherpe’s passionate approach to growing his family business, which aims to deliver high-quality bread at affordable prices. La Lorraine Bakery Group (LLBG) has grown 14% year on year for the past 15 years, although the story could have been very different. In 2008, a fire destroyed one of LLBG’s bakeries, but Guido saw this as an opportunity to rebuild and become stronger. From its internationalization 20 years ago, the business now has 2,600 employees. It is Belgium’s leader in the fresh baked goods market, delivering bread daily to 1,500 supermarkets. It is also one of the market leaders in the European frozen bake-off market, exporting its bakery products to more than 25 European countries. Guido demonstrated his vision and ambition when he conquered the central and eastern European market in the 1990s. In the post-communist era, central and eastern European consumers had a chance to sample a wide variety of high-quality bakery products for the first time. This was a considerable change from the choice available during the communist period. Other innovations include Panos, LLBG’s store-concept brand for ready-to-eat sandwiches, which now has 250 outlets. Guido puts entrepreneurial success down to two common threads. The first is persistence: guts and passion can overcome major setbacks. The second is pride: the passion to be best. LLBG’s managers are proud of their skills and of their team. LLBG now operates 11 production plants and had a turnover of €519m (US$675m) in 2012.

Canada

FYidoctors www.fyidoctors.com

Dr. Alan Ulsifer President and CEO Every successful entrepreneur has a vision, but Dr. Alan Ulsifer’s is clearer than most. As president and CEO of FYidoctors, his goal was to turn independent optometrists, who lack the advantages of large chains, into powerful market forces with patient care at the forefront. Very quickly, this idea turned into Canada’s largest independent eye care provider. Dr. Ulsifer’s strategy was to create a compelling story about how independent doctors could lead the industry. His cooperative model combined many small companies into one and transformed Canada’s eye care industry. The seeds were planted in June 2006 when a group of doctors discussed quality eye care and the challenges facing the industry. They worried that a “box store” mentality of eye care would result in a lower quality of care and felt that doctors should define the eye care industry. With the aim of addressing these concerns, the eye doctors formed Canada’s most modern optical manufacturing and distribution facility. On 1 April 2008, FYidoctors became the largest merger by a number of companies in Canadian history. The company now has over 100 locations, more than 250 doctors and 1,200 employees. Each primary location has access to state-of-the art diagnostic equipment, exclusive custom lens manufacturing and a wide selection of frames. For patients, this means a winning combination of quality and value. For eye doctors, it means having the tools to provide exceptional care. Dr. Ulsifer strives for every patient to leave FYidoctors saying, “Wow, I can’t believe the difference.”

Empresas Maritimas Oxxean S.A. www.oxxean.cl

Mr. Jorge Pacheco Founder and CEO Jorge Pacheco was born into a peasant family on Isla Tenglo, an island opposite the harbor town of Puerto Montt in southern Chile. Sensing that his future lay in the sea and not on the land, he started working with his brother Ivar at the tender age of 14, first as a fisherman and then as a shellfish diver. He combined work with his studies at a local Chilean-German industrial school and began to dream of becoming an entrepreneur. Jorge’s time with the Chilean navy, where he was a rescue diver and helped to raise a sunken ship, further convinced him of the opportunities presented by a country blessed with over 4,000 kilometers of coastline. So when he was 26, he founded fishing and diving company Oxxean with Ivar. Since its formation in 1977, Oxxean has grown to become a major provider of maritime services and an employer of more than 500 people. Its main activities include rescue of ships in distress, professional diving, cleaning and inspection of vessels and refloating of sunken ships. It owns two ports (one in the Lakes region and the other in the Aysen region), which are equipped with the latest technology and support shipping to the southernmost tip of Chile. It also boasts a fleet of 15 working ships, which are equipped to lift up to 30 tons and have floating tow and professional diving equipment. In 2007, Jorge was named as an Endeavor Entrepreneur by international non-profit organization Endeavor Global, which recognizes the achievements of high-impact entrepreneurs in emerging markets.

Hong Kong Maxim’s Group runs more than 760 outlets, while operating catering services at 11 airports in Mainland China through joint ventures. In 2000, Michael introduced Starbucks to Hong Kong, which was an instant success, resulting in over 130 outlets in Hong Kong and Macau to date. As the master franchisor for Vietnam, the group opened its first Starbucks in Ho Chi Minh City in February. Michael plans to leverage the group’s existing networks and experience in Southern China to extend its overall presence in Mainland China. By attracting the best and brightest from all industries, Michael also has a vision for the group to become the “best managed company” in Hong Kong. Besides making generous donations, the group continues to exhibit an unwavering philanthropic spirit by encouraging employees to participate in events organized by the Community Chest of Hong Kong, of which Michael is a member of the board of directors. Chemi-Pharm AS www.chemi-pharm.com

Dr. Ruth Oltjer Owner and CEO When Dr. Ruth Oltjer used to work as a doctor in different hospitals, she suffered disturbing allergies due to the disinfectants she was using on a daily basis. She decided to look for allergen-free alternatives, initially sourcing products from England. Soon word of mouth among friends and colleagues created such demand that, in 1997, Dr. Oltjer set up her own company, Chemi-Pharm AS, in order to make importing the products easier. In 2000, the company began production in Estonia. Year on year, production volumes have increased, while export markets have expanded and product variety has been enriched. Today, the company has 5,000 customers and more than 100 different products, which meet the highest local and European Union standards. In addition to disinfectants, the company also produces cleaning and maintenance agents and cosmetics, including eco brand Domina Elegans. The main target market for Chemi-Pharm is medical institutions, but educational bodies, households and various service and production companies also use its products. Approximately half of Chemi-Pharm’s turnover is generated by export and its main export markets are the EU, ex-Soviet nations, Russia and Asia. Chemi-Pharm has undergone considerable change, but its core values have remained the same. The products and production processes are harmless to people and the environment. The products are biodegradable, and the allergy effect has been minimized. In December 2012, the company was awarded a certificate of European Corporate Social Responsibility. Dr. Oltjer is the first woman to win the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur Of The Year award in Estonia.

Mr. Kim Väisänen CEO and Founder In just 15 years, Kim Väisänen has grown a small start-up company to become a market leader and global pioneer in data erasure and computer reuse, with millions of users around the world. The idea was born when a Finnish hospital accidentally sold a PC containing the medical records of 3,000 patients, leading Blancco to develop a 100% secure data erasure tool for wiping all data from hard disk drives. In just two years, Blancco had more than 100,000 users, and by 2003, this figure had reached one million. Today, Blancco has a network of 16 international offices and partners located in Europe, Asia, Australasia, the Middle East and North America. Military, defense, police, banking and IT asset reseller organizations around the world use Blancco’s products. Every day, tens of thousands of IT assets are sanitized, analyzed and tested using Blancco’s solutions. Kim is a regular columnist in IT magazines and an active online blogger. He also volunteers his time to teach entrepreneurial education to schoolchildren. The digital universe is doubling every 18 months while the spectrum of device platforms is becoming more fragmented. So new compliance and legislative requirements in data security make secure erasure more difficult, but Kim is committed to working alongside Blancco’s clients to help them to manage these challenges. Blancco is proud of the ecological impact that it has had by enabling the reuse of millions of IT assets. Its unique software can erase data from all types of IT assets, from smart phones to the high-end storage technology found in data centers.

Mr. Jean-Luc Petithuguenin CEO Jean-Luc Petithuguenin’s belief that the recycling revolution is on a par with the industrial revolution has driven him to become one of the leading recycling entrepreneurs in Europe. When Jean-Luc became CEO of Paprec in 1995, it had just 45 employees. Today, its workforce is greater than 3,500, and turnover has grown from US$6.4m to US$930m over those 18 years, with an average annual increase of 29% during this time. Now one of France’s leading independent recyclers, Paprec has multiplied the tonnage it recycles by 100 so that last year it processed five million tons of waste. The number of sites has increased by 80 and the number of plants by 50. Jean-Luc‘s goal is to exceed US$1.5b turnover by the end of 2014, and to hire 1,500 new employees, so that the group becomes one of Europe’s leaders in recycling. He successfully secured US$200m late last year to pursue this ambition, which he aims to achieve by constantly pushing the limits of recycling through continuous innovation. He plays a major role in developing the future of recycling and sustainability. He has also won numerous awards that recognize his commitment to the industry. Jean-Luc ensures that social dimensions have been woven into Paprec’s human resource policies with the promotion of diversity and inclusiveness across the business. Dental Corporation Tokushinkai Group www.tokushinkai.or.jp

Dr. Hiroshi Matsumura Chairman Dental Corporation Tokushinkai Group operates in 10 countries through 65 dental clinics, technical centers and management departments, which treat 840,000 patients a year. Nevertheless, Dr. Hiroshi Matsumura’s dental business group remains true to its roots as a social enterprise. Based on his philosophy that “medical care is a human endeavor,” Dr. Matsumura has confronted what he believes to be the outdated thinking of many in the dental profession ever since he launched his first practice in 1981. Aged 28 at the time, Dr. Matsumura started with just three dental chairs and six staff. But he was determined to create a dental health group that could better respond to the diverse needs of patients. So he combined high-quality staff training with state-of-the-art equipment and facilities in pursuit of a mission to train dental staff to treat patients with humanity, dignity and care, while always remaining professional. Furthermore, he established the Tokushinkai business model. This model relies on team management to provide high-quality care and services through excellent coordination between a decision-making body and individual clinics. The group has grown into one of Asia’s largest health service organizations, with a turnover of US$120m. It has also been a generous provider of support and financial help to its community. It helped those affected by the 2008 Sichuan Earthquake and the 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake, by offering food, water and dental services.

Dangote Industries Limited www.dangote.com

Mr. Aliko Dangote President and Chief Executive Aliko Dangote’s strong entrepreneurial streak was evident even as a child when he made profits from investing his pocket money. However, the Nigerian tycoon’s business career really took off in 1977, after he obtained a loan of NGN500,000 (around US$3,000) from his uncle and used it to start trading in cement. He was so successful that he repaid that loan within three months instead of the two-year period that had initially been agreed. Before long, Aliko was also trading in sugar and flour and, by the early 2000s, he was producing both of these commodities as well as cement. Now Dangote Group, the company Aliko founded in 1981, is the biggest publicly listed conglomerate in West Africa with operations in 14 countries. It employs over 26,000 people in Nigeria alone. Dangote Group owns sugar refineries, flour mills and salt processing facilities and is Africa’s largest producer of cement. It has also diversified into a range of other activities including haulage, fertilizer production and noodle making. Next, Aliko has his sights set on building a US$7b refinery that will process 400,000 barrels of oil annually. At present, Nigeria does not process its own oil despite being one of the world’s largest producers of the commodity. Aliko is ranked the richest man in Africa by Forbes magazine with an estimated fortune of US$16.1b. A renowned philanthropist, he donated US$26m to victims of flooding in Nigeria in November 2012. He is also a member of the World Economic Forum.

K.A.Rasmussen www.ka-rasmussen.no

Mr. Harald Sverdrup Executive Chairman Harald Sverdrup is a fifth-generation descendent of Knut Andreas Rasmussen, the goldsmith who launched his eponymous business in Oslo in 1872. The group is one of the world’s largest suppliers of precious metals to industry and the jewelry crafts business, and has manufacturing facilities in Norway and Sweden as well as operations in six other countries. Among the items it manufactures are industrial catalysts, silver cutlery and alloys for use in dental products such as fillings. In 2002, Harald became a co-owner of K.A.Rasmussen, which is a private company, and he joined the management team five years later. Since then, he has played a major role in driving the group’s impressive growth. Operating profits in 2011 were NOK75.2m, up 55% on the previous year. The massive transformation that K.A.Rasmussen has undergone over the past eight years is a result of the company’s strategic focus on its industrial manufacturing activities and its ability to halt a decline in consumer goods sales by bringing desirable new products to market. Harald has guided the company through this period of renewal, continually demanding greater product innovation and more effective manufacturing processes. Over the years, K.A.Rasmussen has built up strong relationships with a network of universities and research institutions. Harald himself holds a Ph.D. in chemical engineering and is a professor at Lund University in Sweden — a position he manages to combine with being his company’s Executive Chairman. K.A.Rasmussen supports environmental protection through its corporate social responsibility program and Harald is an adviser to the UN’s panel on climate change.

Hybrid Social Solutions, Inc. www.hybridsolutions.asia

Mr. Jaime Ayala Founder and President Jim Ayala is a social entrepreneur on a mission: to boost his country by providing remote villages across the Philippines with innovative, solar-powered products and services that enable them to climb out of poverty. More than 20 million Filipinos lack electricity and safe water. So Hybrid Social Solutions Inc (HSSi) works with a national network of partners to distribute solar equipment. To date, over 45,000 people have benefitted from HSSi’s initial range of solar lighting and charging products. Families have enjoyed a 25% rise in their household income because fishermen have used lamps to attract fish while farmers have warded off bats and other crop-reducing pests. Shopkeepers and contract workers have increased their earnings through extended working hours. HSSi is also introducing solar-powered village access centers that provide communities outside the energy grid with safe water, phone charging, lights and power tools, internet access, tele-medicine, and banking services. By giving Filipinos in remote villages a means to achieve their potential, Jim feels he is making an important contribution to his country’s efforts to catch up with its more prosperous Asian neighbors. Prior to becoming a social entrepreneur, Jim worked for international strategy firm McKinsey & Company, where he was head of the Asian energy practice. Jim serves on a range of boards focused on sustainability and education. He is Chairman of Stiftung Solarenergie (Solar Energy Foundation) and a board member of the World Wildlife Fund (Philippines), the Philippine Tropical Forest Conservation Fund, and First Gen (a renewable energy company). ARA Asset Management Ltd www.ara-asia.com

Mr. John Lim Group CEO Real estate tycoon John Lim has climbed to the top of the Singaporean business world after setting up ARA Asset Management in 2002, when he was 46. A pioneer in establishing real estate investment trusts (REITs) in Singapore and Hong Kong, ARA currently has nearly US$18b in assets under management. It is also affiliated to Cheung Kong Group, the multinational conglomerate founded by Hong Kong business magnate Li Ka-shing. During its early years, ARA had to battle against the market fallout from 9/11 and the SARS epidemic. But John persevered and transformed what was a four-person team into a corporation with more than 1,000 employees in 12 cities. ARA has recorded year-on-year revenue growth since its listing on the Singapore Stock Exchange in 2007 and boasts one of the strongest balance sheets among its peer group. It has virtually zero debt and assets of more than US$200m. With no proven roadmap to follow, John helped to establish the REIT industry in Singapore. Among ARA’s many innovations was the groundbreaking cross-border REIT in Asia — Fortune REIT, which has a dual primary listing in both Singapore and Hong Kong. ARA made Forbes magazine’s “Asia’s 200 Best Under A Billion” list in 2010 and 2011, while John himself was ranked 38 on its “Singapore’s 40 Richest” list in 2012, with an estimated fortune of US$310m. In 2008, John set up the charitable Lim Hoon Foundation to support needy students. It is named after his late father, who was a Chinese immigrant.

At the time, few black executives in South Africa were running successful businesses that they themselves had launched. But having grown up in what he describes as a “divided and underprivileged society,” Sipho was determined to become a role model for his own son and others. He also dreamed of creating a mineral extraction giant based in South Africa, which would help the African continent to earn the respect of the world. Sipho had previously worked in new-market development for another natural resources company, so he had an excellent understanding of the opportunities that existed for South African coal producers in emerging Asian and Latin American economies. Under his leadership, Eyesizwe grew rapidly and by 2005 it was producing 20 million tons of coal per year. In 2006, Eyesizwe merged into Exxaro, a coal and mineral group formed from the unbundling of the non-iron ore assets of South African mining company Kumba Resources. The following year, Sipho became Exxaro’s CEO. Today, Exxaro has a turnover of US$1.4b and employs more than 7,500 people. Over 15% of its shareholders are international and it has operations on four continents. Exxaro invests 5% of its wage bill in training its people because it believes that education is necessary to build a successful nation. Sipho was president of the Chamber of Mines of South Africa from November 2007 to November 2010.

Grupo Codorníu www.grupocodorniu.com

Mrs. María del Mar Raventós Chalbaud President María del Mar Raventós Chalbaud has the distinction of being the great granddaughter of Josep Raventós Fatjó, the man who uncorked the first bottle of sparkling wine in Spain in 1872. She is a descendant of the Codorníu family, which began making wine in the Penèdes region around Barcelona in 1551. Today, Codorníu is the world's largest producer of bottle-fermented sparkling wine, known as cava, which is made in the traditional way that champagne is produced — a process known as méthode traditionelle. Mar, as she likes to be known, joined the group in 1976 as head of its shareholders’ department. She went on to become Assistant General Manager of the group and was appointed Company President in 1999. Since then, she has presided over a period of expansion and internationalization. The company now has 10 wineries located in the best wine regions in Spain as well as in California and Argentina. Under Mar’s leadership, it has also bought distributors in the UK and the US. In addition, Mar has overseen significant product innovations — for example, Codorníu launched the first 100% Pinot Noir rosé cava in 2004. Codorníu has been supplying wine to the Spanish royal family for over a century and in 1976 King Juan Carlos I declared its cellars at Sant Sadurní d'Anoia "a national monument of historical and artistic interest." Mar has two degrees from the University of Barcelona and an MBA from IESE Business School. She is mother of six children and juggles her professional responsibilities with family life.

Sweden

Kopparbergs Bryggeri AB www.kopparbergs.se

Mr. Peter Bronsman Founder and CEO Peter Bronsman had been a merchant seaman for six years when one night he slipped and fell overboard. It's dark, the ocean is full of sharks and he is thinking that this is probably the end. But he manages to stay afloat with the help of a sack and is eventually saved after the ship turns back to look for its lost seaman. After this experience, he decided to change his life completely. Peter bought Kopparbergs Bryggeri a well-established brewery dating back to 1882 that was on the edge of bankruptcy in 1994. Not only did the Gothenburg businessman rescue it, he transformed it into Sweden’s largest brewing company and revitalized the world’s fruit cider market in the process. Kopparberg is a small town in central Sweden and the brewery is its biggest employer. Nearly 290 employees work for the company, which exports its fruit cider and lagers to more than 30 countries and boasts turnover of almost SEK2b. Peter masterminded this growth by developing a sweeter cider and a wide range of flavors from traditional choices such as apple and pear through to more exotic flavors including strawberry and lime and a blackcurrant limited edition named “Witches Brew.” Kopparberg’s target consumers are 25- to 34-year-olds and it has over 150,000 fans on social networking website Facebook. Today, Kopparberg Cider is the world’s bestselling pear cider and the brewer is the third largest producer of cider in the UK, the country that has the highest per capita consumption of cider. Kopparbergs Bryggeri has also been recognized for its lager, which was awarded “Best European Lager” at the Beer World Cup in San Diego in 2008. Peter aims to continue the company’s success in all markets by producing high-quality products, creating new flavors and finding fresh niches. In his spare time, Peter is chairman of Kopparbergs/Göteborg FC, a women’s soccer club that plays in the Swedish women’s premier division.

Dr. Riccardo Braglia CEO Helsinn is a family-owned chemical and pharmaceutical company based in the southern Swiss city of Lugano. Dr. Riccardo Braglia has been its CEO since 2007, when he took over from his father Gabriele who founded the company in 1976. The group manufactures and markets medicines for use in oncology and gastroenterology, specifically anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs that treat the side effects of cancer therapies. In three decades, Helsinn has grown from a small operation that occupied half a floor of office space into an established multinational that sells its products through distributors in 90 countries. The group has a workforce of approximately 500 employees in Switzerland, Mainland China, Ireland and the US. It has enjoyed a compound annual growth rate of around 6% over the past five years and invests some 20% of its turnover in research and development. Under Dr. Braglia’s leadership, Helsinn has adopted a unique business model based on the in- and out-licensing of pharmaceuticals. It in-licenses new drugs that are in early- to late-stage development from large pharmaceutical companies. It then takes them through pre-clinical and clinical studies, and the process known as chemistry, manufacturing and control, until the medicines have gained worldwide market approval. The group then out-licenses the products to its network of local pharmaceutical partners. Dr. Braglia is a board member for a top Swiss basketball club, the Lugano Tigers. He has also sponsored the building of a school in Ethiopia and is involved in a campaign to restore the church in the village where he lives.

QCIL is a significant employer of scientists in Uganda and an important provider of essential drugs for the treatment of malaria and HIV/AIDS — Uganda’s two biggest killer diseases. QCIL is the only pharmaceutical company in sub-Saharan Africa that manufactures triple-combination antiretroviral (ARV) drugs for reducing the virulence of the HIV infection. Over the past five years, the company has helped to increase the number of AIDS patients receiving treatment from 140,000 to around 500,000. It has also worked to build awareness of the syndrome in Uganda, which has decreased the HIV/AIDS incidence rate from 15% to below 8% in this period. In addition, the company’s anti-malarial medicines have played a major role in cutting the number of deaths from malaria in Uganda from 400 per day to below 200. It is the company’s ambition to reduce this number to zero. QCIL’s first plant was built in 2007 and the initial investment was US$32m to finance the project. Today, it produces around six million tablets daily and a second plant is being planned, which will increase production to 18 million pills per day. Its objective is to supply affordable medicines across sub-Saharan Africa through bilateral agreements between Uganda and its neighboring countries. Emmanuel has interests in the food and beverage production industry in Uganda since he is the founder of Vero Food Industries, which processes rice and produces bottled drinking water. Chobani, Inc. www.chobani.com

Mr. Hamdi Ulukaya Founder, President and CEO

When it comes to making yogurt, Turkish-born entrepreneur Hamdi Ulukaya has the magic touch. Chobani Greek Yogurt, which he launched in 2007, is already the best-selling brand of yogurt in the US. Made using a centuries-old technique of straining to remove excess liquid, it comes in a wide range of flavors from plain to mango, passion fruit and strawberry banana. Hamdi was born into a dairy-farming family in eastern Turkey, but he moved to the US in 1994 to learn English and pursue business school. He never finished business school. Instead, he started making feta cheese in upstate New York in 2002 after his father visited and complained about the quality of cheese on sale. Three years later, Hamdi bought a closed-down yogurt factory, despite being advised against it by friends, and founded his company Chobani. He started out with five employees and it took a year and a half to develop the product. In 2009, Hamdi signed a major deal with leading US grocery wholesaler Costco and today Chobani’s annual sales are approaching US$1b. It has a workforce of more than 2,200 people and sells its products in Australia and the UK, as well as in the US. Chobani’s newest US manufacturing facility is the largest yogurt factory in the world. As an immigrant, Hamdi believes in embracing change and improving communities. So, 10% of Chobani’s profits are donated to the company’s charitable foundation, Shepherd’s Gift Foundation. The company is an official sponsor of the US Olympic team and its corporate philosophy is “Nothing but good.”

Uruguay

Zonamérica www.zonamerica.com

Mr. Orlando Dovat CEO Orlando Dovat holds the distinction of founding the first private free zone in Uruguay in 1990. By his own admission, it was a bold endeavor since he didn’t actually have enough capital to fund the project when the proposals were first submitted to the government for approval. He managed to secure additional funding of US$3.5m from the Inter-American Investment Corporation and began the process of designing a state-of-the-art business and technology park. Zonamérica is located in Montevideo, the capital city of Uruguay, near the international airport. Under Orlando’s leadership, the free zone evolved from being a pure logistics and industrial free zone into a global services park. The zone combines Uruguay’s strengths — including its legal and economic stability, qualified workforce and pro-business environment — with cutting-edge technology and infrastructure. In Zonamérica, Orlando has created a business community that hosts more than 300 companies and employs some 8,500 — mostly young people. Its annual revenues are in the region of US$45m and the organizations based in the park generate almost 2% of Uruguay’s GDP. Corporate social responsibility is core to the way Zonamérica is managed. The park has an employee welfare program as well as an employment bureau. It also offers training activities for people who live in the surrounding area and supports the local community through volunteering programs. Orlando is Vice President of the Chamber of Free Zones of Uruguay, founded in 2008 to develop the free trade zone system in the country. He is also a member of the Board of the Chamber of Commerce Uruguay-USA.

In 2002, he founded Karma Resorts, bringing the concept of boutique villa resorts to Asia allowing clients to purchase freehold villas. Most recently, John has developed Chakra Resorts as a brand, along with Karma Estates, Karma Spa, and a chain of beach bars under the Nammos and Karma Beach labels.
