Aloha EWI of Honolulu! What an exciting EWISP awards dinner! $15,000 in scholarships were awarded to four outstanding high school seniors. Congratulations to EWISP Director Jennifer Ihara (Level 3 Communications) and her committee. It is always so rewarding to see where our fundraising dollars go, to meet the students and their families, and to hear about their outstanding accomplishments. A huge thank you goes out to Angelica Wai Sam Lao, 2011 EWISP Winner and our guest speaker for the evening. Her speech was so inspiring and motivating for the students and all of us. Despite it being finals week at the University of Hawaii and having three finals the

next day and a 50-page paper due on Friday, Angelica took the time to share her story with the group. She reminded all of us that we have to prioritize and plan accordingly. And, she did exactly that. Angelica told me later that she was so grateful for the opportunity to speak and give back. Mahalo Angelica and have a great time studying abroad in Shanghai! Thank you to the following EWI members who stepped up to the challenge and invited a guest to the EWISP awards dinner: Abigail Jacinto (Robert Half International), Leianne Pedro (Honolulu Star Advertiser), Ana Lucia Rodriguez Balanta (Ligs University), Maegan Brandt (Insurance Solutions LLC), Julie Vaugh (Hagadone Printing Company), Wanda Sanchez (Bank of Hawaii), Sheri Tamayose (First Hawaiian Bank), Nadine Uratsuka (Accuity LLP), Karen Mendes (American Business Solutions) and Sherrie Hill (Better Business Bureau). All of you helped to spread the excitement of the EWISP awards dinner and helped to increase our connections at the same time. Remember that word of mouth will always be our strongest marketing tool!

We just have a few more months remaining this term. But, we have lots to do as well! In June, we will need you at our membership meeting to establish quorum and to elect the chapter’s Delegates to the EWI Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting (LCAM) to be held this September in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Nominating Committee will also announce the 2015-2016 slate of officers . See you at member firm, Plaza Club, on Wednesday, June 10th.

If you missed the EWISP scholarship dinner, please mark your calendars for the Adult Students in Scholastic Transition (ASIST) dinner to be held on Wednesday, July 15th at member firm, Hawaii Convention Center. This will be another opportunity to see the impact that EWI of Honolulu is making in our community. (Please take note of the date change to the 3rd Wednesday in July.)

And, in August, please join us for a firm night at Malama Day Care and Nursing (member firm Ito Healthcare Group; Cathy Iwai, Representative). We may all be faced with caring for our parents and loved ones sooner than we hope, so this will be an educational evening to help us prepare for that eventuality. Besides a tour of the new Malama Day Care facility, we will be provided much needed information on elder care. You don’t want to miss this – Wednesday, August 12th.

Your attendance and participation in EWI dinner meetings, committee meetings, philanthropic projects, pau hana events, and informal get-togethers will bring you an ROI. You will automatically develop stronger connections throughout our business community and personal relationships as well. EWI of Honolulu is a great resource! Use it to its fullest!

the Mayor’s Office of Housing!!Jun Yang was born in Reno, Nevada and is a

graduate of the University of California, Berkeley. Jun worked as a community organizer for the

grassroots community organization People Orga-nized for Westside Renewal in Santa Monica, Cali-fornia. His role at POWER focused on affordable housing and low-income development. In 2008, Jun moved to Oahu to work with Faith Action for Community Equity as their lead community orga-nizer dealing with affordable housing policy and tenant rights and advocacy. In February 2013,

Mayor Kirk Caldwell appointed Jun to be Executive Director of the Mayor’s Office of Housing. One of

its central roles is to address homelessness.!

Treasurer’s Report: The March 2015 financials and April disbursements were approved. Committee Reports: ASIST – Wanda Sanchez

• The committee has secured all judges. Judging will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2015, at the Hawaii Convention Center.

• The ASIST dinner will be held on July 15, 2015 at the Hawaii Convention Center.

• A total of 12 applications were received. Communications and Marketing – Jocelyn Palafox

• Julie Vaugh will spearhead getting our EWI events into the PBN calendars and other publications to promote EWI.

EWISP – Jennifer Ihara

• The interviews for EWISP applicants took place on April 11, 2015 and went very well.

• Cora sent letters out to all executives to encourage their attendance at the upcoming EWISP and ASIST dinners.

Philanthropy – Wendy Kia

• BINGO at Pearl City Nursing Home on April 11 was a big success. Thank you to all that participated and donated prizes.

• Next Step Shelter event will be on Friday, July 31, 2015, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A reminder email will be sent to membership to seek volunteers and also request donations of gifts/prizes.

Program – Jocelyn Collado

• June’s dinner meeting will no longer be an Executives’ Night. Executives’ Night will be postponed to possibly November, which is closer to EWI of Honolulu’s anniversary. We will still have a speaker, Jun Yang, Director from the Office of Housing.

• June is also a Business Meeting so members are strongly encouraged to attend so we will have a quorum.

• 53 member firms. • Corporate launched a Thrive for 5 membership campaign and is

challenging all chapters to bring in 5 new member firms between April 1 and August 30, 2015.

Get excited and mark your calendars! • April 8, 2015 – Meet guest speaker, Vanna Novak of Speak to Persuade at our April dinner meeting

at member firm, Plaza Club. Thank you to Past President Gwen Fujie for her help in securing Vanna to speak to us.

• April 11, 2015 – Bingo at Pearl City Nursing Home! Reach out to Philanthropy Director, Wendy Kia (Marie Louise Fine Garment Cleaners) and volunteer! This is always a fun event! Prizes for the seniors are needed. Please bring these to the April 8th membership meeting.

• May 13, 2015 – We are giving out $15,000 in EWISP Scholarship Awards! Meet these outstanding high school seniors and their families! Support Jennifer Ihara (Level 3 Communications) and her committee.

• June 10, 2015 – EWI Executives Night – Invite your executive and be present for our first annual membership awards. An outstanding member firm and member representative will be honored. A special menu is being prepared by member firm, Plaza Club for this event.

• July 15, 2015 – ALERT! New Date! This will be the date of our ASIST Dinner meeting. (3rd Wednesday of July) Meet the adult students and their families as we all celebrate at member firm, Hawaii Convention Center, for dinner and awards. Another $15,000 in scholarships will be awarded to deserving students. Support Wanda Sanchez (Bank of Hawaii) and her committee at this scholarship dinner.

Attending our monthly meetings or philanthropic events is definitely one way to network with your fellow members. Remember that EWI is built on the 3Cs – Connections, Careers, and Community. Monthly meetings are a way to connect and also enhance your own personal development. In February, Craig Chong of Fresh Leadership focused on executive coaching and how we all can benefit by coaching others or being coached. In March, Jan Kaeo of Dale Carnegie Training spoke to us on the attitudes for service. She reminded us of the important principles of attitude control. Some of my favorite principles: “Don’t fuss about trifles. Create happiness for others. Expect ingratitude.” We were also so happy to have Past President Eleanor Urakawa in attendance. Eleanor and Jan previously worked at the same company and that’s actually how Jan learned of EWI of Honolulu about 20 years ago. If you have not attended a dinner meeting in a while, you could be missing out on a great opportunity to connect and enhance your career! Back in February, I encouraged all of you to reach out to another EWI member for a one-on-one. Did you have a chance to complete a one-on-one? Karen Garcia (Hawaiian Electric) and Nadine Uratsuka (Accuity) were the first to respond. They chatted over coffee and discussed the upcoming golf tournament and caring for their families and their aging parents. Please continue to have these one-on-one discussions. You’ll be surprised by what you learn.

Your next Connect Challenge will be to focus on the second of the 3 Cs – Careers. Did you know that one of your membership benefits in EWI is a monthly corporate webinar? It is with great pleasure that we announce that Jocelyn Palafox, Corporate Sales Manager at Mokulele Airlines, has been selected as the 2015 Na Wahine Alaka’i Scholarship Award winner! Jocelyn will receive up to $1,300 to attend the upcoming EWI Leadership Conference and Annual Meeting in Tulsa, Oklahoma to be held September 23-26, 2015. The award covers the registration fees for LCAM and an Academy of Leadership session.

Jocelyn has been her firm’s EWI Representative since 2012 and in this short period, served on the Board as our Sergeant-at-Arms and is currently our Communications Director. During her term as Sergeant-at-Arms, Jocelyn developed many new processes that have made dinner payments and reconciliation more efficient. Jocelyn enjoyed her role as Sergeant-at-Arms as she feels it allowed her to CONNECT with her fellow EWI representatives and she was quickly able to build relationships.

Jocelyn is also doing an outstanding job as Communications Director for EWI of Honolulu this year. Social Media is a huge part of our lives these days and Jocelyn and her committee have taken on the added challenge of managing our EWI of Honolulu social media platforms. It has been a learning curve for all involved but Jocelyn and her committee are working hard to make sure we leave our footprint in the Social Media environment.

And, lastly, Jocelyn, a busy mother of two, strives to be an active member of EWI of Honolulu. She volunteered at our Golf Tournaments and tries to attend all monthly dinner meetings. Her goal this year is to participate in more Philanthropy events.

Please congratulate Jocelyn as the 2015 Na Wahine Alaka’i Leadership Award recipient and please thank her for all of her contributions to EWI of Honolulu!

Where does your money go? Your participation in the golf tournament, our major fund-raising event, will support EWI’s mission of community involvement and allow us to continue to provide generous scholarships to individuals pursuing a higher education degree and to support other philanthropic activities related to literacy. A small portion of the proceeds will also support some of our operational expenses.

EWISP (Executive Women International Scholarship Program) provides scholarship funds to outstanding high school seniors for their pursuit of a baccalaureate degree from a post-secondary education institution. Students are judged on their oral and written communication skills, creativity, scholastic records, financial need, involvement in extracurricular activities, leadership qualities and honors, citizenship, attitude, and clearly defined career goals. In 2014, EWI of Honolulu awarded $8,000 in scholarships.

ASIST (Adult Students in Scholastic Transition) Scholarship Program provides financial support to adults facing economic, social, or physical challenges, who are looking to improve their situation through educational opportunities (non-traditional students). The goal of the scholarship is to enable recipients to improve their self-esteem and to have a positive impact on their personal life, employment, and community through the furtherance of their education. In 2014, EWI of Honolulu awarded $7,500 in scholarships.

Who is EWI? Executive Women International is a professional organization that brings together key individuals from diverse businesses for the purposes of promoting member firms, enhancing personal and professional development, and encouraging community involvement. EWI is unique in that the firm, not the individual, holds the membership.

Since its establishment in 1938 in San Francisco, California, the organization has grown, and today, EWI has more than 2,000 member firms and 2,300 representatives in chapters in major cities across the U.S. and Canada. EWI of Honolulu was established in 1967 and currently has 53 member firms and 57 representatives.

EWI Helps Professional Women Thrive

We are excited to announce the launch of a new membership campaign Thrive for Five in conjunction with the release of the new marketing materials. The campaign will run April 1-August 31, 2015.

The goal of the campaign is for each Chapter to bring in five new members in five months. Of course, we encourage you to bring in more than five so we have added a little incentive. The Chapter with the most new members

during the campaign will receive one registration for LCAM 2015 in Tulsa. (In the event of a tie, a random drawing will be held.)

The best source for new members is current members. As EWI Corporate President-Darlene mentioned in her April message, Research shows the importance of referrals. According to Paul and Sara Edwards (authors of "Getting

Business to Come to You"), up to 45% of most service businesses are chosen by customers based on the recommendations of others. So who knows EWI better than you? Who do you know in your community who would benefit from being a member of EWI? Who do you know in other EWI cities that could benefit from membership in
