Immediate Implant Placement and Provisionalisation in the Aesthetic ZonePresented by: Dr Christopher C.K. Ho, Specialist Prosthodontist

Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm

Venue: Marigold Chinese Restaurant, Sydney

Cost: Members - Free Non-Member - $99

Restoration of missing teeth in the aesthetic zone is a great challenge for dental practitioners. Traditional guidelines advise a 2–3-month period of socket remodeling after tooth extraction and an additional 3–6 months of load-free healing that were essential for osseointegration in the 1980s. Newer protocols such as immediate implant placement at the time of extraction have become more popular with the advantages of only one surgical procedure and reducing the overall treatment time. Dr Ho will share the protocols to enhance success and predictability in these cases.

DR CHRISTOPHER C.K. HO BDS Hons (SYD), Grad Dip Clin Dent (Oral Implants) (SYD), M. Clin. Dent. (Pros) (LON), D. Clin. Dent. (Pros) (SYD), MRACDS (Pros), FPFA

Furthermore he completed a Doctorate in Clinical Dentistry in Prosthodontics from the University of Sydney and is Fellow of the

Pierre Fauchard Academy. He is Special Field Member of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in Prosthodontics.

Dr Ho lectures extensively on aesthetic and implant dentistry both nationally and internationally. From Caries to Cancer: What’s new and interesting in Oral PathologyPresented by: Prof Hans Zoellner

Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm

Venue: Marigold Chinese Restaurant, Sydney

Cost: Members - Free Non-Member - $99

This Seminar outlines practical clinical oral pathology with an emphasis on conditions commonly seen in the dental practice, including diagnosis, management, use of screening tools, and biopsies. We will highlight conditions that are difficult to diagnose and/or manage, newly diagnosed conditions and premalignant/malignant lesions. Concepts in diagnosis will also be discussed, with special attention to any new adjuvant screening tools and oral soft-tissue biopsies.

PROF HANS ZOELLNER graduated in Dentistry from the University of Sydney in 1983, and then spent three years in general dental practice in Wagga Wagga. He then returned to Sydney for PhD studies at the Institute of Dental Research, studying the vascular response in periodontitis, and this was followed by a three years working as a post-doctoral scientist in the Department of Medicine, at Royal Melbourne Hospital, studying the fibrinolytic system in endothelium. He then gained a Lise

Meitner Post-Doctoral Fellowship to support two years of independent research in the Department of Physiology, at the University of Vienna, where he studied endothelial apoptosis with a view to understanding microvascular remodelling. He has been teaching and performing research in the Department of Oral Pathology at the University of Sydney since 1995, teaching Oral Pathology and investigating aspects of vascular biology, cancer biology, wound healing and biomechanics. Briefly interrupting his service in Sydney, was one and a half years from 2013, doing research at the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York. Separate to his direct academic responsibilities, Prof Zoellner also headed an advocacy group for dentistry from 2003 to 2013.

Regeneration of Periodontal Tissues and Bone – new approaches and biomaterials Presented by: A/Prof. Axel Spahr

Time: 6:30pm-9:30pm

Venue: Marigold Chinese Restaurant, Sydney

Cost: Members - Free Non-Member - $99

his lecture reviews current knowledge, advances, methods and materials in relation to regenerating tooth supporting tissues and bone. Today, marginal periodontitis therapy aims at complete regeneration of lost periodontal tissues (restitutio ad integrum) rather than merely preventing further attachment loss. Prevention of bone loss after tooth extraction and regeneration of bone in edentulous areas are frequent and common requirements to enable predictable implant placement. The objective of this presentation is to outline and evaluate past and current concepts of periodontal and bone regeneration and to describe possible future developments.

A/PROF. AXEL SPAHR Dr. med. dent. habil., MRACDS (Perio), FICD

Axel Spahr is Head of Periodontics at the Sydney Dental Hospital and Head of the Discipline of Periodontics at the University of Sydney.

Axel is the former Head of Periodontics at the University of Ulm in Germany and has worked at various international

universities and research facilities. He has additional training in microbiology, molecular biology, extensive experience in basic science research, animal research and clinical research. A/Prof. Spahr’s research interest includes periodontal regeneration, bone regeneration, periodontitis and systemic diseases, antimicrobial therapy as well as dental implants and peri-implant diseases. He has lead large externally funded research projects and is collaborating with leading international research groups and companies in the field of periodontology, implantology and bone regeneration. He is author of numerous publications in international peer-reviewed dental and medical journals, book chapters and has presented his work at professional conferences worldwide. A/Prof Spahr is a board registered periodontal specialist, he works part time in an established specialist periodontal and implant practice in Sydney and is the past President of the Periodontal Research Group of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR).
