SOUTH-SOUTH KNOWLEDGE EXCHANGE AND URBAN SOLUTIONS
Beijing CHINA 22-26 September 2014
This event is based in a South-South government-to-government knowledge exchange on urban solutions – provision of services to the urban migrant and poor. It
is a three-way innovative and collaborative South-South learning initiative between three UNDP offices - the Asia Pacific Regional Center, Bangladesh, and China countries offices.
This event will apply human-centred and design thinking methodology focused on developing a prototype at the end of the exchange. The initiative will kick-off with an
introductory workshop which will present both the Chinese government and CSOs as well as representatives from the Bangladesh government and other interested parties with an
innovative and envelope-pushing concept for human-centred design thinking for urban service provision and the potential for exploring south-south exchange differently. The event will also
dissect social issues through a reverse engineering approach and hold field visits to local 'One-Stop Urban Service Centres’.
Why attend?๏ Participants will gain hands-on experience with design thinking, reverse engineering, and system analysis with the end goal of strengthening knowledge exchange and transfer and creating prototypes. Each day will allow for participants to apply design thinking principles to understand better the services in the field and will end with a reflection on their visit which will contribute to the reconstruction/prototype. Please note, this event will be held primarily in English.

CROWDFUNDING FOR DEVELOPMENT
Amman JORDAN 22-23 September 2014
Crowdfunding as an innovative funding mechanism is being explored and tested by various UNDP Country Offices. The necessary management arrangements to enable UNDP to raise resources from individual donors worldwide are currently being discussed by a corporate
Crowdfunding Task Force. In the Arab States region, crowdfunding is receiving particular attention by UNDP: under the auspices of the UNDP Innovation Facility, the Regional Bureau of Arab States allocated funding for crowdfunding initiatives to UNDP Syria, UNDP Jordan and PAPP in August 2014. UNDP Saudi
Arabia is launching a crowdfunding project in collaboration with government partners. UNDP Egypt is exploring the concept and the existing policy bottlenecks as well. In Lebanon, the Live Lebanon project successfully
mobilised resources through crowdfunding mechanisms over the past several years. UNDP Croatia raised $10,000 for an energy independent school on IndieGoGo. Offices in other regions are testing the concept as well. This event
will bring practitioners and crowdfunding experts together to exchange experiences, learn from each other, and develop plans for crowdfunding in their own countries.
Why attend?๏ Practical learning to improve the effectiveness of the planned initiatives: colleagues from Country Offices embarking on crowdfunding formulate action plans for their campaigns based on the peer-exchanges and advice from UNDP colleagues and experts. ๏ Clarifying potential, limitations and necessary arrangements within UNDP: a Concept Note outlining limitations and potentials of crowdfunding for UNDP will be prepared after the event which will list necessary global management arrangements and which will be shared with the senior management working group on crowdfunding. ๏ Co-developing the showcasing of UNDP’s expertise in the field: accomplishments of UNDP crowdfunding initiatives, particularly in Lebanon and Croatia, as well as lessons learned, will be shared via extensive online communications, a video documentary of the event and interviews with invited speakers from UNDP and external experts.

GAMIFICATION - USING GAMES TO ENGAGE AND SHIFT MINDSETS
Cairo EGYPT 25-27 September 2014
National actors and the international development community are beginning to use games and play as a means of clarifying policy choices and managing the trade-offs among various priorities that are inherent in
sustainable development policy-making, planning and programming. These approaches provide opportunities to understand complex situations in a more accessible manner, to collect ideas and opinions
from traditionally under-represented stakeholders, and to build empathy among those with divergent ideas and priorities. UNDP Country Offices around the world have begun to use games for a variety of development issues,
including youth unemployment, environmental degradation, and conflict.
The Egypt office event will bring together those interested in gamification, including both external experts and UNDP colleagues who have used games to good effect, for a three-day event to demonstrate the power of games to build
empathy and trust among various stakeholders, share experiences and insights about games to address development issues, and design a game or two for UNDP to use with national partners.
Why attend?
This event will be beneficial to colleagues who are interested in using games to engage a variety of national partners and citizens at large in the development process. The event will offer participants opportunities to: ๏ Increase familiarity with gamification as an approach that supports decision-making,
prioritisation and management of trade-offs throughout the development process. ๏ Have hands-on experience in designing a game for UNDP. ๏ Develop a plan for using games in their own countries.

DESIGN THINKING FOR SERVICE DELIVERY
Tbilisi GEORGIA 26-28 September 2014
The Georgia Country Office will host a design thinking workshop to strengthen the service delivery capacities of the “112,” the national emergency service, with a specific
focus on providing equal access to services for Persons with Disabilities (PwD). The design thinking workshop will map the process, starting with the initial call, i.e., contact a PwD and
ending with the final step, i.e., provision of the requested assistance. The workshop will include participants of various stakeholders, including users, service providers and the public at large. The
design thinking workshop will not only ensure the mapping of the process, but also a further monitoring of the piloting phase by those who are part of this exercise. If successful, it will also create the foundation for applying design thinking methodology in other initiatives to support public service
reform and improve service delivery.
Another objective of the event is the continued building of the community of ‘futurespotters’ – citizen experts that UNDP Georgia reached out to recently through its Spot the Future
initiative. Jumpstart Georgia, a Spot the Future partner, led the work with women hackers to increase access to public data, has already been consulted about 112 Emergency Services, and the
participation of the entire ‘futurespotters’ community in the workshop is envisaged, along with the other relevant partners.
Why attend?๏ Increase familiarity with design thinking methodologies. Colleagues with an interest in disabilities issues would gain valuable insights into design thinking methodologies to address them. ๏ Exposure to the successful, multi-country initiative “spot the future” that identifies and partners with changemakers to explore what they are already doing to help create the world they want.
