SCIENCESCOVERY offers a voyage of discovery within the Smart Specialization Strategy
(RIS3) of the Northern Region of Portugal. In a simple way, the audience is invited to a
one-day of constant interaction with researchers and to find more about the
Scientific Hub of the North of Portugal. This voyage is possible thanks to a virtual
network where participants choose what smart specialization areas they wish to
explore.
The concept is translated onto Portuguese as “CIÊNCIA À MODA DO NORTE” taking
advantage of a local saying in a fun way meaning “Science in a Northern Way”. Based
on the project concept, a concise visual identity was developed which represented a
network (a scientific hub) where different journeys and voyages can be made. The
different colours represent both the different knowledge areas to explore but also
convey the form of a brain (representing knowledge and critical thinking) but also the
form of a tree top (representing growth).
The concept was reflected on the promotional and teaser videos developed at the beginning of the project and used in the
awareness campaign and pre-events.

THEMATIC AREAS
The first edition of SCIENSCOVERY (2016) was
focused in four priority areas of the Smart
Specialisation Strategy (RIS3) of the Northern region
of Portugal.
ACTIVITIES
Science and fun were the main ingredients of a set of
different activities that included workshops, games,
hands-on experiments, debates, networking, etc.
These activities were grouped in five main categories.
TARGET GROUPS
The project activities (and thus communication and dissemination) were targeted to three main groups
AUTUMN FESTIVAL
Among the major teaser activities/pre-events there is a set of
activities carried out during the Autumn Festival. This event,
organised by one of the SCIENCESCOVERY’s supporters,
Fundação Serralves, was implemented in the last Sunday of
September and included six hands-on experiments stands that
complemented the agenda of the Festival as “teaser” activities
of the event.
Information about the participation of the project at the 8th
edition of the Festival was made available on the
SCIENCESCOVERY website.

Soil: In this workshop, we will know more about the properties of aromatic, medicinal and culinary
plants existing in our botanical gardens. From spice routes to cosmetics, many will be the stimulus
to the senses. Let’s extract aromas and produce dermatological clays.
Micro-world: In a micro-world, everything is invisible to our eyes. We will amplify and unravel secret
life forms. Come watch: nutrients fixing bacteria, antibacterial plant extracts, decomposing fungi
from organic waste and spores responsible for the smell of the soil.
Sustainability: The activities of this workshop suggest you and adventure to green buildings. Green
walls, natural toys, pulp bricks or hydroponic greenhouses using physics and creativity provide you
sustainable solutions for prototyping and small-scale structures. Come build with us!
Biodiversity: Serralves Park is the home of numerous living beings vital to the ecological balance.
Pollinating bees, scavenging earthworms and predatory ladybugs – let's understand what the
ecological features of the different animal groups in the park are.
Natural fibres: Fibres are associated with all human activities. Find more about different fibres
traditionally used in clothing, test some of their properties and try natural ways of dyeing through
organic materials.
Flavour route: This workshop is an invitation to the palate. We will experience old flavours with new
habits: sprouted and fermented, dehydrated and processed or simply cooked, many will be the fall
of snacks we are going to prepare for the party. Who wants to taste?
PROMOTIONAL MATERIALS
Written promotional materials already
presented (such as the booklet, leaflets,
posters and PowerPoint presentations)
were used both in online and offline
activities. Additionally, a brochure with
the programme and activities planned
for the Hall (“Science inside the Hall”)
was also created and distributed at the
teaser activities (Autumn Festival) and
training actions.
