EUROPEAN DEVELOPMENT OF THE TEMPERA/EVOTHERMDAT PROCESS

What are the WMA interests?

• Reduction of stack emissions at the plant• Reduction of exposure to fumes• Energy (Fuel) Savings• Traffic returns to normal quicker• Less odor• Less odor• Expanded work period• Higher RAP incorporation• Longer binder life• ….

Eurovia Range

• Historic :

– 2003 : Development of the warm mix asphalt with Aspha-min ® process :

• Introduction of zeolithe during the manufacturing of the mix• Introduction of zeolithe during the manufacturing of the mix• Reduction by 30 °C of the mixing temperature

– 2006 : Evaluation of the Evotherm processes with Meadwestvaco

» Evotherm ET» Evotherm DAT » Evotherm 3 G (Evotherm MA 3)

What is the Evotherm DAT process ?

• The Evotherm DAT (Dispersed Asphalt Technology) is a warm mix asphalt process to reduce the manufacturing temperature by 40 to 60°C

• Addition of a soap (a chemical additive + water) in the bitumen line bitumen line

– Water : Creation of an inverse emulsion (water in bitumen) to improve workability of the binder at lower temperatures

– Additive (10 to 20 %): modification of the interfacial tension and adhesion

• EVOTHERM DAT5 (H5)

• Different plants : continuous and by batch

• Plant modifications :– For the production of the soap: dilution of the Evotherm DAT 5 in

water

European experience

water⇒Metering pump for the required amount of soap in the binder

– To regulate the burners correctly to the required manufacturing temperature (optimization of the fuel or gaz combustion)

– To regulate the fumes temperature (will depend on the plant type)

Conclusion (I)

• In 2009, – 150 000 t were laid down in Europe (Evotherm DAT – 1 500 000 t throughout the world (50% Evotherm DAT

® and 50 % Evotherm 3G)• Wide range of mixes :• Wide range of mixes :

– Polymer bitumen– Hard bitumen– RAP (up to 50 %)

• Jobsite experience :– Great flexibility– Adjustement in our working methods for the manual work

• Laboratory development continues :– Correlation between laboratory manufacturing and the plants– Oxydation phenomena on the binder– Adhesion test : optimisation of the additive content versus the

aggregate nature

Conclusion (II)

• Future … – Environmental pressure (reduction of the fuel consumption, gaz

emissions…) will allow a development – The additional cost is holding back the development.Yet, the

evolution of the fuel price will reduce this difference (fuel price in France : 1/1/2009 = 235 €/t, 1/4/2010 = 420 €/t )

– Companies have to demonstrate the quality of the WMA
