The new tent was erected in Nawa dis- trict bazaar after a suicide attack killed 16 people and injured 55 others in Lashkargah locality 10 days back. Mualvi Karim, one of the organizers of the protest camp, said in the past they had also asked the Taliban via mosques to join the peace process but no practi- cal action came from their side in this regard. “This time we launched the movement in a unified manner and erected the tent in bazaar of the district, we are peace seekers.” Besmillah Khan, a tribal leader and a participant of the camp, told Pajhwok that innocent Afghans were being killed for 40 years. “People who join us in this movement only seek peace and noting else.” Surgul, another tribal elder, said the tent would be available until the Tali- ban accepted their suggestion. Helmand Ulema members have formed a committee to work with protestors in Lashkargah city in a bid to get their demands for a ceasefire agreed to. The Ulema committee will report- edly work with the protestors and hold talks with the Taliban. This came after the committee stepped in and got the protestors to end their hunger strike – which started on Thursday. Protestors said on Sunday, they ended their hunger strike when the Ulema members promised to start negotiations with the Taliban on their behalf. The Ulema members have also re- portedly promised protestors they will encourage more people to join the sit-in protest for peace, which was launched after a deadly car bombing at a stadium last week- end. The Ulema members meanwhile said by the end of the week they will encourage people, through mosques, to join the peace rally and that they will also start talks with the Taliban. The High Peace Council deputy chief Habiba Sarabi meanwhile on Sunday welcomed the Helmand peace rally but also called on Tali- ban to end the war and join the peace process. The activists embarked on a hun- ger strike on Thursday after their demands for a ceasefire were re- jected by both government and the Taliban. However, by Saturday, six hun- ger strikers were hospitalized, Lashkargah health officials con- firmed. The hunger strike started after both government and the Taliban failed to agree to ceasefire demands by protestors. The protestors had been holding a sit-in peace rally in Lashkargah city since Monday, following a deadly car bombing that killed at least 16 people after a wrestling match at a local stadium last weekend.
