EVENT SUMMARY:

The second workshop of the ETP Training Series titled “Technical Workshop on Textile Effluent

Management: Choosing, Managing and Monitoring ETPs” organized by ESTex, Department of Chemical

Engineering, BUET took place on 20-21 December,2018 at the “Multipurpose Center” of Department of

Chemical Engineering, BUET. The workshop had two parallel sessions: a half day ‘Executive’ session for

industry top management and policy makers; and a two-day ‘Regular’ session for industry mid-

management, ETP managers and operators, post-graduate and undergraduate students, and

entrepreneurs. Industrial experts and reputed academicians with expertise in textile wastewater

management conducted the workshop sessions. Distinguished speakers from home and abroad shared

their experiences about wastewater treatment fundamentals, guidelines, policies, legislations and

advanced techniques. Lectures engaging technological aspects, national and international standards and

case studies allowed participants to gain practical knowledge about effluent treatment and management

techniques. The lectures included fundamental information on waste management, real-life case studies,

and a session on queries. About 75 participants (18 in the Executive session, and 47 in the Regular session)

participated in the workshop sessions; participants represented 18 textile factories, 3 universities,

Bangladesh Economic Zone Authority (BEZA), Textile Technology and Business Centre (TTBC) of IFC-PaCT

Program, and local entrepreneurs.

Key objectives of the workshop were to help textile management to select appropriate technologies to

treat and reuse wastewater, and to help managers, operators, and technologists monitor and manage

effluent treatment plants. The concluding session of the workshop was graced by the presence of

honorable Additional Secretary Dr. Younus Ali Pramanik as Chief Guest and Dr. Syeda Sultana Razia

(acting Head, Department of Chemical Engineering, BUET) as Special Guest. Dr. Mohidus Samad Khan,

Program Manager, ESTex, Department of Chemical Engineering moderated the workshop.

At the end of the workshop, certificates and hardcopies of lecture materials were given to the participants.

The participants also filled out a workshop evaluation form. Analysis of the feedbacks received shows that

the participants highly appreciated the opportunity to interact directly with the resource persons.

Participants mentioned that the design, contents, and case studies presented in the workshop, group

work, and laboratory visits enhanced their practical knowledge of wastewater and sludge management.

This report provides an overview of the workshop. Program details and electronic copies of the lecture

materials are available on ESTex website: www.estexbd.com.

by lunch. The participants also shared filled out a workshop evaluation forms and shared their

valuable comments. Overall, the workshop was highly rated and considered useful (75% of the

participants). The participants particularly mentioned about the change in mindset to adopt

advanced treatment technologies instead of conventional options and emphasized on

considering wastewater as a product and not a waste of money in the comments. Few of the

participants showed interest in implementing rainwater harvesting in their factories They

expressed that such workshops should be organized on a regular basis, and that topics like solid

# Lecture: “Industrial Pollution and Water Footprint”-Dr. Mohidus Samad Khan, Department of

Chemical engineering, BUET

Dr. Khan started proceedings with an overview of textile pollution. He presented key pollution

parameters, legislations, and standards. Emphasizing on the impact of water footprint, Dr. Khan

pointed water footprint as an addition to brand values in the future. He also shed light on national

and international regulations including ZDHC regulations and incorporation of tertiary treatment

systems associated with ETPs. Dr. Khan discussed key factors in the selection of right treatment

techniques to comply with national and international standards. Dr. Khan presented case studies

to demonstrate the importance of getting ETP process sequence and calculation right to ensure

optimum performance of the ETP. He concluded his presentation on a positive note that the

country’s textile sector will shift towards Zero Discharge in the near future.

# Lecture: “From Linear to Circular Economy in Textile Factory” - Dr. Mirko D’Antoni, Process

Engineer, PantaRei Srl

Dr. Mirko demonstrated the importance of shifting into circular economy by treating wastewater

with appropriate technology. He highlighted that ETP can be a great resource for the factory,

when installed and maintained properly. Dr. Mirko discussed that ETPs can be a powerful

business tool in the long to save water and maximize profit. He concluded with an aspiration of

ZDHC to be implemented and industries to have zero discharge within 2020.

# Lecture: “Buyer Legislative: Overview of Bangladesh Textile Sector: Compliance to Sustain

Water as a Production Resource” - Jim Silverman, MD, CETP DEPZ, Flagship Dhaka ETP

Mr. Jim Silverman discussed about the importance of following ZDHC guidelines for textile waste

management. To comply with ZDHC regulations, inclusion of and managing tertiary treatment

process in effluent treatment is mandatory. In order to manage tertiary treatment effectively,

Mr. Jim emphasized that appropriate pre-treatment of wastewater is crucial. He demonstrated a

case study on the cost effectiveness of Reverse Osmosis (RO) and Ultra filtration (UF) techniques,

when the water is pretreated in an ionic level for grit removal. Finally, he agreed with previous

speaker (Dr. Khan) about the textile industries need to change their mindsets in order to

transform the current scenario of wastewater treatment.

# Lecture: “Rainwater Harvesting in Garments Industry of Bangladesh: Potentialities and

Liabilities for Future Water Demand Mitigation”- Mr. Ashraful Alum, Secretary, Rain forum,

LEED US GBC Consultant

Mr. Ashraful Alum demonstrated the urgency of saving water by stating one of the most famous

quotes of former UN secretary Boutros Boutros-Ghali, “The third world war will be fought over

water, not politics”. His presentation included a comparison of properties of rainwater and

process water used in industries. Mr. Alum highlighted the architectural aspects of rainwater

harvesting in industrial buildings, which can be a potential resource for replacing groundwater.

The highlights of his presentations are:

● Rainwater harvesting and wastewater treatment for re-using water can reduce water

footprint;

● Artificial groundwater recharge can save the community from future water scarcity;

● Water responsive activities can create awareness on water conservation among the

industries;

● Efficient plumbing and drainage line can save overhead and maintenance costs;

● Surrounding ecology and micro-climatic will have positive impact; and

● Factories can be shown standard examples.
