HUGE SUCCESS
Sending spiritual bouquets of roses to the many

To help support the Maternity Closet in other ways or to
make a referral of a family in need, please contact
Carleen Koch, 834-6182 or Theresa Kear, 781-1137.
Jesus says,
“When you do it for the least of
these,
you do it for Me.”
Thank you to all who help keep the
Maternity Closet operating
year after year.
It is a true testament to giving hearts!

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE
In today’s gospel Jesus tells us: “Love one
another.” Love holds a family together. It is not what a
family does which makes it outstanding, rather it is what
it has-- love for one another.

Christ-like love can take many forms. One of them is
simply going out of one's way to show an interest in someone
else. This is what Jesus did with his incarnation. He left the
bliss of heaven and came to this sinful world just to extend us
the hand of salvation.
About fifteen years ago, one of Jesus' followers, a
normal, everyday Christian, a middle-aged Irishman named
Liam, decided to do the same thing, and ended up changing
the shape of eternity.
It was summer in Dublin, Ireland, and on his way to
work Liam saw a young man admiring one of Dublin's
beautiful Gothic churches. The young man was Darren, an
American graduate student on a European tour.
Liam interrupted his own business and offered to show the
obviously enthralled Darren around the church. Darren
accepted. An hour later, after attending a novena to St. Rita
with the local nuns and having a cup of tea with the parish
priest, the two emerged, fast friends. They exchanged
addresses and promised to keep in touch.
Before they parted, Liam had a sudden inspiration.
He debated about whether he should say anything, but finally
he took his courage in his hands and, leaning over, he
whispered a question to Darren: "Have you ever thought of
becoming a priest?" Darren said he hadn't, and the
conversation ended abruptly.
Their correspondence gradually trickled off as time
went on. Liam hadn't heard from Darren in nearly a year
when he received a surprising letter from him... in a
seminary! "I'm studying to be a priest, Liam!" Darren wrote.
"You have no idea how grateful I am to you for putting that
idea into my head with your question! You were an
instrument of the Holy Spirit."
The years of training passed, and in 2004, ordination
day arrived. The church in Fargo, Minnesota was full to
capacity. And there in the front pew, smiling broadly was
Liam. A few weeks after his ordination, Darren was
diagnosed with leukemia. The doctors tried everything, but
there was no cure. Fr. Darren had only a few months left to
live. He accepted his suffering with spiritual joy, and so did
Liam.
Fr. Darren died in September, 2005. He was thirty-
four years old. He died young, but thanks to Liam's going just
a little bit out of his way to show an interest in Darren on that
afternoon in Dublin, he died having discovered and fulfilled
his vocation. Father Michael

Cemetery of the Innocents
The ECC Students for Life Club and Elk County Right to
Life group have constructed a display in the yard at St.
Leo church in Ridgway to offer a visual reminder of the
scourge of abortion in our country. There are 300
crosses. Each cross represents 10 babies. So over
3000 babies are lost to abortion each DAY in the
U.S! Many men and women who had abortions say they
felt they had no other option or they were alone. And
many post-abortive parents give testimonies to the emo-
tional scars they endure that no one told them could
happen. But HELP IS AVAILABLE. See our brochures
in the churches and at the display site to find out how to
find help. In this month of May – we pray to Mary to help
the unborn – and their parents. Materials donated by

Why Was Saint Anne Chosen to Be a Saint?
Saint Anne played an extremely important role in the histories of major world
religions, particularly Christianity. She produced Mary, a child born of Immacu-
late Conception. Mary later became the mother of Jesus.
Who Was Saint Anne
Saint Anne was the grandmother of Jesus Christ. She was born from the House
of David, the line which was prophesied to give birth to Christ. In Hebrew, her
name was quite possibly Hannah, as Anne is the Greek derivative of the name
Hannah.
Saint Anne is the mother of Mary, the woman who gave birth to Jesus by Virgin
Birth. The Angel Gabriel came to Mary and told her that she would give birth to
the Son of God.
Saint Anne As a Mother
In the Gospel of James, which is part of the Apocrypha, you will find the story of Saint Anne. She and
her husband Joachim were unable to conceive a child, even though they tried to do so and really want-
ed a baby. However, one day an angel came to them and told them that they would have a child. Since
she was so overjoyed, Saint Anne promised that she would dedicate this baby's life to the service of
God. Their daughter Mary was born.
Saint Anne produced an extraordinary child, as she was born free from original sin. Being born free
from original sin is known as an Immaculate Conception. Therefore, part of the reason why Saint Anne
is so famous is because she produced a child born of Immaculate Conception.
Saint Anne read the scriptures to Mary when she was a very small child.
Saint Anne had promised that she would give her child to the service of God, and she kept her holy
vow. When Mary was three years old, her parents brought her to the Temple and gave her to the ser-
vice of the Temple. They did not see her again.
Although she had wanted a child so badly, Saint Anne knew that she had to honor her promise to the
Lord. Saint Anne and Joachim would not be able to raise the child since Mary needed to be raised in
order to become the mother of Jesus Christ.
Saint Anne Becoming a Saint
Although in recent years, as compared to the history of the Church, a more formal process has come
about for becoming a saint, Saint Anne is still considered a Saint because of her role as the mother of
Mary, grandmother of Jesus Christ, and as a devout and pious servant to the Lord God.
You might say that she did not perform any miracles in her lifetime, which is technically a requirement
for a Saint. However, that all depends upon how you define the word miracle. One could look at her life
and the way that she brought up her daughter, and how she promised to give her daughter to the works
of God, and say that she truly acted in a miraculous way.
You may be asking yourself, Why Saint Anne? Well, why not Saint Anne. Every month from March until
December a group of ladies get together on the third Monday of the month and have lunch together,
they meet and have fellowship. What is important is they are together in the name of Saint Anne and
are there for one another. Consider joining them. The ladies will be meeting tomorrow May 20, in the
Parish Center at noon to break bread and fellowship. Nothing to do, join them!
