WELCOME
Welcome to Madison and Isabelle Caird.

Room 3. We hope that the girls enjoy their
time at East Taieri.
KAPA HAKA PERFORMANCE – MĀORI & PACIFIC ISLAND FESTIVAL
The Kapa Haka Group will be performing this Wednesday 29 August at the Otago Māori and
Pacific Island Festival at the Edgar Stadium Lion Foundation Arena.
The children will need to be at school by 8.30am to change into their Kapa Haka costume. If
your child has a school uniform please wear it on Wednesday as they will need to wear their
skort/shorts as part of the Kapa Haka costume. We will be going into the venue by bus. East
Taieri is the second group to perform at approx. 9.40am. However it may be that the
programme runs slightly ahead of time or later, so to avoid disappointment we ask you to
arrive with plenty of time to spare. The children will be back at school for lunch.
CROSS COUNTRY – Year 3-6 children
We will be holding our own Cross Country tomorrow, Tuesday 28 August, at school. The
Senior races will start at 11.30am and the Year 3/4 at 11.45am. Parents are welcome to come
and support the children at the event. We ask that you use the church carpark because we will
be using the school carpark for the races. Children will need to wear appropriate footwear and
clothing.
MUSEUM SLEEPOVER
An excited group of Year 4’s from Rooms 8 & 4
headed off to the museum for a sleepover in Discovery
World on Thursday night. While at the Museum the
group enjoyed learning more about different land
formations and had an awesome experience in Star Lab.
They also used their wearable arts skills to create
newspaper costumes and act out Maori legends. Friday
was spent at the Edgar Sports Centre working on
netball and soccer skills followed by a fun afternoon at
Moana Pool. Fantastic
behaviour was shown by all
children and commented on
by the Museum educators.
Grateful thanks to all the
parents who helped on the
sleepover.

SCARY STORIES BY ROOM 12
It was dark.
Pitch dark.
I heard a rumbling.
It was a spirit of my cat named Rocky.
Then another rumbling.
It was my cat’s spirit again.
It was even hungrier.
I was scared.
I heard another.
And suddenly my blanket disappeared.
I was cold.
BY: Jack Chalklin
It was dark.
I was in bed.
I heard a little bang on the window.
It sounded like a hammer banging on
the wall,
The window squeaked like a mouse.
I was super scared
It was a ghost.
BOO!!
By: Blake Chirnside
It was dark
The Moon was shining like a torch,
I was in bed.
I saw a thing tapping at my window.
I thought it was a magical or muscly bumpy
monster.
It looked enormous.
I froze like a tree.
I was scared.
I fell to pieces.
By: Koby Hey
It was dark,
The sun went down as I stepped into
the forest.
It was as gigantic as a giant’s fat
foot.
The trees were howling at me.
Then something was getting closer.
It was a big, bad, stinky, silly,
creepy, wolf.

Handy Hints for reducing Lunch Box Waste in School Lunches For more ideas and information http://www.wastefreelunches.org/ or Google Waste-Free school lunches Ideas for lunch
Use containers e.g. from supermarket purchases (like ice cream & deli) and takeaway shops to keep food air-tight. Wash & reuse (many times!). If children don’t finish eating some of their food, it might still stay fresh for use later. Great for sandwiches, other main dishes, fresh fruits & vegetables, and treats – all food!
Make yogurt at home (packets purchased from supermarkets) or buy in large containers & put yogurt in small, screw-top lidded container, so any unwanted yogurt can go back home
Cut up fruits and vegetables. Children often take 1 or 2 bites out of an uncut apple or banana and throw the rest away. To avoid this, pack cut-up fruits and vegetables in air-tight reusable containers. Your child can take a few bites and save the rest for later.
If your child has chips etc, buy them in a large bag and transfer a day’s portion to a small air tight container
Include a small cloth napkin for your child’s use during lunch.
Use metal utensils which your child can wrap in the napkin after use
Use reusable drink containers (preferably metal)
Suggestions for success
Find out why certain foods have come back uneaten. Did your child not like it? Not hungry enough to eat everything in the lunchbox? Was there a birthday celebration at school that day?
Consider making a list of foods that your child likes to eat for lunch and update it regularly with your child’s input.
Encourage your children to help plan, prepare and pack their own lunches. They're more likely to eat a lunch that they've helped prepare. Younger children can cut fruit or make their own mix from of healthy foods such as raisins, dried apricots, sunflower seeds, whole-grain cereals, and pumpkin seeds.
Avoid plastic bags, plastic wrap, aluminium foil, and pre-packaged foods whenever possible.
Children love eating food they have helped to grow – use food from your own garden whenever possible
Discuss & reward! If your child comes home with lids put back on properly, lunch box still tidy etc, maybe they could have a reward as an incentive to continue – teachers could reinforce correct behaviours
Another local enviroschool - Warrington School – uses a pattern for each child to make a lunch wrap out of pre-loved fabric and used supermarket bags. Most of the children use their loved lunch wrap every day for their main food item e.g. sandwiches. They are happy to share the pattern with other schools

ST HILDA’S YOUNG ENTERPRISE SCHEME - COMPOST
Hi there, My name is Kate Thomson and I am a year12 student at St Hildas Collegiate. A group of us have decided to enter ourselves in the young enterprise scheme. Young Enterprise is when you make a product and have to sell it over a period of four months. Our group have decided to bag and sell mixed and pure chicken manure compost. We are selling it for $15 per 25kg bag if you purchase 3 or less. Any more bags than 3, are sold at $12.50 per bag and then over 10 bags are $10 per bag. Usually our price for drop off (for bags) is an extra $5 but I will drop it off free of charge to the school if parents are able to pick it up from there? As I live in Mosgiel, just down the road from East Taieri School. Or if that option is not possible then they can pick it up from my house or pay the extra $5 for it to be delivered. We have an advert and I was wondering if you would put it in your school newsletter for us so we are able to get our name known around the community and hopefully start selling some bags! I have attached the advert and there is also a brochure that I could drop off at the school informing you of our two products and the research we have done etc. If you would like to contact me you can use this email address or 0275283933 or 4891541. This would be greatly appreciated! Thank you very much. Kind regards, Kate Thomson
