2/2 TWILLS with Jason Collingwood - $275/$344, materials extra; students pre-warp looms Jason’s blockweave class was a smash hit at EVFAC last spring. His class this year will examine straight twill, broken twill, and twill on opposites. Within these three structures, students will explore many two- and three-color sequences, each of which results in its own unique design. They will apply crossed wefts (parallel and contrary motion) and clasped wefts to 2 /2 twill, further increasing the design possibilities. Time permitting, the class will look at pick-up and 3/1 double-faced twill. This class will also include some work with Shaft Switching, giving students the chance to learn how to adapt their own looms to try this exciting technique. EVFAC will supply students with Jason’s warping and threading instructions; looms need to be warped ahead of the first class meeting. Jason Collingwood began studying weaving with his father, renowned weaver Peter Collingwood, in 1987. Jason’s rugs have been exhibited widely throughout the United Kingdom, Europe, and the United States. He spends several weeks per year teaching rug-weaving techniques in the United States and Canada. “PLAYING WITH BLOCKS” WORKSHOP with Maria Navarro-Pino - $120/150; materials extra; students pre warp looms This workshop will explore block weave: how to read a profile draft and different design elements you can use. We will look at various ways to weave these patterns while reviewing some basic weaving techniques. We will also look at finishing techniques: ways to secure fringe, wet finish, and press your finished project. Students need to choose either summer/winter or crackle. Maria Navarro-Pino began weaving more than 30 years ago, when it was the fashion to “weave sticks and feathers together and hope it didn’t fall apart.” Then as now, she finds the whole process of weaving amazing—from designing a warp to throwing the shuttle. In recent years she has been exploring the seemingly endless possibilities of expressing mathematical formulas in 8-harness block twill. 2.5 days: Friday & Saturday, April 30 & May 1, 10am to 4pm; Sunday, May 2, 10am to 2pm.

KNITTING SOCKS ON TWO CIRCULAR NEEDLES with Liz McMaster - $64/80, materials extra. Knitting socks is growing in popularity. So join the crowd! Knitting socks on two circular needles allows you to measure as you knit to assure a good foot fit. For this class, some knitting experience is a plus; knowing how to turn a heel is even better—but not required. On Friday we will learn how to get the stitches on the needles and begin knitting the leg of your sock. Your homework is to knit the length of the sock’s leg. On Sunday we will learn how to knit the heel, turn the heel, and complete the gusset. Bring about 425 yards of superwash sock yarn (EVFAC has a great selection!), two US size 3 circular needles (approximately 20” long), and an adventurous spirit. Liz has been knitting for more than 50 years and has taught basic and advanced knitting and shown in craft shows in Georgia, Pennsylvania, and New Mexico. 2 days: Friday, April 9, 10am to 2:30pm and Sunday, April 11, 12:30pm to 4pm. LEARN TO KNIT with Liz McMaster - $24/30, materials extra. Knitting has become enormously popular in recent times. So join the crowd! You will learn the basics of knitting: cast on, knit and purl stitch, and bind off. Bring worsted weight yarn and size US 7 or 8 straight needles (also available for purchase at EVFAC) and note-taking supplies, if desired. Saturday, April 10, 9am to 12pm.

POCKET DOLLS with Nadina Barnes – $49/60, EVFAC and students supply materials. Make a simple but charming fabric scrap doll that features a pocket into which you can tuck a fabric baby or two. Fabric scraps will be supplied and/or bring your own treasured scraps. Students need to have basic hand- or machine-sewing skills. Nadina began sewing doll clothing at age 8 and never stopped … she now has 45 years of creative sewing experience! Nadina also has many years’ experience teaching in middle and elementary schools, as well as working with adults and children in camps and in workshops. Saturday, April 17, 10am to 4pm.

GRANNY SQUARES AND VARIATIONS with Madeline Stark - $32/40. Students supply yarn. Contemporary crochet designers are reviving the good-old granny square and putting their own creative spins on it. If you can do the fundamental stitches of crochet—chain, single crochet, and double crochet—then come to this class to learn the basic granny square and joining techniques, plus a few granny square variations. Time permitting, we’ll even learn to crochet a flower that can be felted into a decorative pin. Bring several colors of worsted-weight yarn (a great way to put scraps to use!) and a size G or H crochet hook. Madeline loves to teach her crafts. It brings her joy to pass along an ancient craft that joins people together and develops their creativity. Saturday, May 15; 10am to 2pm.

DROP-IN FABRIC COLLAGE with Nadina Barnes - $10/12.50 Bring your imagination and scissors to make a fabric collage with fusible web, cloth, and an iron. Nadina Barnes (see “Pocket Doll” class in April) will be on hand to guide you in cutting and assembling a fabric collage you can bring home the same day. We will have scraps on hand here, but feel free to bring your own fabrics and a sketch or illustration (this can be as simple as a coloring book picture) to use as a base. This is an informal, drop-in activity—no need to reserve space. Bring the family! Drop in between 10am and 4pm on either or both days: Friday, May 21 / Saturday, May 22.

A LOOM TO LOVE: MEET THE RIGID HEDDLE with Trish Spillman - $44/55; students supply yarn; optional materials fee, $112. Rigid heddle looms are simple to use yet can help weavers of all

ages create delightful pieces. These looms are great for exploring weaving at an affordable cost, they can help you use up random lengths of yarn, and they’re the perfect companion to take along on your summer travels. Trish will lead you through the basics of preparing a warp and dressing the loom, then have you off and weaving by the day’s end. We’ll be using the Cricket Loom, which Schacht Spindle Co. describes as “compact, capable and cute.” Bring yarns you’d like to weave with or come early and buy a small amount of yarn at EVFAC. The optional material fee includes purchase of a Cricket Loom with accessories; students may also opt to rent a loom at the lower fee. Trish is EVFAC’s esteemed founder. She began her career in New York as a fashion merchandiser at Bloomingdale’s and eventually found the love of her life in weaving. She has never met a loom she didn’t like, and her joyful, spirited teaching style is truly unique. Saturday, May 22; 10am to 4pm.

WEAVING BASICS with Beatrice Maestas Sandoval - $192/240, materials fee $25. Learn traditional weaving skills from a master New Mexican fiber artist. Students will create both a small Rio Grande–style piece and one in jerga-type twill. Take this class if you have never woven, or as a refresher course if you are rusty and would like a review. Beatrice is an accomplished spinner, dyer, weaver, and embroiderer whose work has won many prestigious awards. She cares deeply about preserving New Mexico’s fiber traditions, and her warm and encouraging teaching style has made her a favorite with many EVFAC students. 2 weekends: Saturday & Sunday, May 8–9 & May 15–16; 9:30am to 4pm.

KNITTING WITHOUT BOUNDARIES with Valentina Devine - $52/65. Students supply yarn. Round up all those stray bits of yarn and prepare to unleash the free-form knitter inside! In this class, Valentina guides you through free-form knitting at its best: circles, swirls, scrumbles, and more. Discover how to create extraordinary and beautiful designs while using up all those wonderful yarns left over in your knitting basket. Bring lots of different yarns in small amounts, knitting needles in sizes appropriate for yarns, a medium-size crochet hook, blunt yarn needles, and any other implements you like. Born in Moscow and raised in Germany, Valentina has always knitted! A contributor to many knitting books and publications, she shows her art-to-wear garments in boutiques throughout the United States. HANDMADE PAPER with Lise Poulsen - $44/55; materials $15 Try the “other end” of the fiber spectrum! Find out how to make your own beautiful paper and go home with several sheets of paper that you can use in your projects. The class will also cover how you can use equipment you have at home to make paper. All materials will be supplied. No toxic materials are used in this class. Born in England, Lise Poulsen comes from several generations of accomplished and professional knitters and tatters. She has worked in a variety of fiber media for two decades. She draws color and texture inspiration from landscapes in England and in her new home in the mountains south of Taos. Saturday, May 15; 10am to 4pm.

TAPESTRY FROM EVERY ANGLE with Robin Reider - $240/300, materials fee $25. Learn the basics of tapestry techniques or sharpen your existing abilities. Students will design (on graph paper) and weave an abstract or geometric tapestry using at least four different angles. Students will also learn some color grading techniques to use in their design. Choose vibrant colors from Robin’s hand-dyed collection. For all levels, beginner to advanced. Students can plan to warp looms as part of class time (pre-warping not necessary). Robin is a nationally recognized tapestry weaver who uses natural dyes to color her wool. You can learn more about Robin and see some of her exquisite tapestries at www. weavingsbyrobin.com. INDIGO DYE DAY with Liesel Orend - $53/67; materials fee, $10. Join Liesel at her home studio in Española for a day of exploring indigo and woad dyeing! We will learn about several different methods of creating blue: an indigo fermentation vat, an indigo standard reduction vat, and using fresh woad leaves. We will over dye colors as well, creating a range of purples and greens, as well as the gorgeous blues that only indigo can produce. Participants will receive a sample of all of the colors we create, and may also bring up to 1 pound of their own fiber to dye. EVFAC will supply students with directions to Liesel’s studio. A gifted teacher and fiber artist, Liesel is also passionate about natural dyes and is an expert colorist. She gathers and grows many of her dyes and sells her naturally dyed yarn. A SPECIAL LOG CABIN with Terry Meyer - $52/65; materials extra. Create a lovely piece to use as a wall hanging, the center of a larger quilt, or a pillow cover. Build your cabin using Terry’s enhanced pattern, which adds flaps inside each block for a truly striking dimensional effect. EVFAC will supply a list of materials, and the project can be sized to your own taste. This easy-to-do class will get you started, and the project will finish quickly. Quilting experience is not necessary, but you will need basic machine sewing and rotary cutter skills. Drop by EVFAC to see a sample of the Special Log Cabin and start planning your fabrics! Owner of Wild Wind Quilting, Terry is passionate about quilting and sharing her love of this endlessly creative medium. She recently surprised her husband with a birthday quilt made from his vintage t-shirts! Saturday, June 19; 9:30am to 4:30pm. UNDERSTANDING COMPOSITION THROUGH COLLAGING with Ted Hallman - $88/110; materials fee $5, students supply fabrics. Taking ordinary and diverse ideas such as moody emotions or a tango rhythm or a line of poetry and turning them into compositions is just the beginning. This is, of course, fun—but both easy and challenging. We will use the medium of fabric collage, where we can continue to move the elements about until we are satisfied with the unity and clarity of the compositional components. In this class, we are studying the guts of creative expression, and the material we’ll cover is essential for creative work in all media. There are always rules in starting, to be overthrown in the heat of expressing our ideas. Students will supply some fabric; EVFAC will offer a limited supply of fabrics at no charge and also has some pieces of cloth available for purchase. No art theory background required. Ted’s work has been included in major art museum collections: The Smithsonian, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Victoria and Albert Museum, to name a few. The following class is offered at EVFAC through Northern New Mexico College. Students can apply and register online at www.nnmc.edu. The deadline for registration is one week prior to the class, and if you’ve never taken a class at NNMC before, you should apply two weeks before the class begins. Nondegree applicants do not require transcripts. Some fees apply per semester, so if you are taking more than one class, the per-class cost decreases. Tuition is a bit higher for New Mexico nonresidents; it is substantially lower for New Mexico seniors 65+. Four-Harness Weaving III: Saddle Blanket - Liesel Orend, Instructor. April 9–11 and 16–18; 9–4 Fridays and Saturdays, 12–4 on Sundays. 2 credits, approx. $141 for NM residents; $68 for NM seniors 65+; $249 out of state. CRN 21906 Explore the many design possibilities of the weft-faced twill weave as it is used in traditional saddle blankets. We will use a light, a medium, and a dark color yarn on a four-harness loom to create different effects, such as undulations, waves, diamonds, and ovals. These are very sturdy, thick weavings, suitable for rugs and mats, and of course, saddle blankets. Students will experiment with several techniques and then design and complete one finished piece. This class is for those who have had prior weaving and warping experience. Liesel Orend weaves tapestries, complex weave rugs, and traditional jergas. Her weavings have won awards at Taos Wool Festival and Albuquerque Fiber Arts Fiesta, and she teaches nationally.
