In Volume 80B, No. 3 the following article contained errors.
Silva S. V. P. S. and Mercer J. R. (1985) Effect of protein intake on amino acid catabolism and gluconeogenesis by isolated hepatocytes from the cat (Felis domestica). Comp. Biochem. Physiol. 80B, 603-607.
On pp. 604 and 605 the results in Tables 1 and 4 should read as follows:
Table 1. Glucose production by hepatocytes from cats fed low (LP) and high (HP) protein diets
transformed
Substrate LP HP df SEM
Pyruvate 82.4 a 69.3 a 8 0.204
Alanine 44.3 b 36.3 b 8 0.205
Threonine 6.8 c 4.6 c 6 0.529
Glutamine 9,8 d 36.1 e 8 0.382
Each value is expressed as nmol/mg dry wt/hr and is the mean from 5 cats except for threonine in which 4 cats were used. All substrates were used at 10 nM. Significant dietary effects are indicated by dissimilar superscripts (P < 0.05).
Table 4. Urea production by hepatocytes ~om cats fed low (LP) and high (HP) protein diets
Treatment LP HP
Control 17.2 a 15.7 b
Leupeptin (~0 ~m) 9.0 a I0.2 a
transformed SEM (8 df) 0.08 0.08
Mean values are as nmol/dry wt/hr. Three cats were used for each diet. Significant dietary effects and leupcptin effects within diets are indicated by dissimilar superscripts (P < 0.05).
This alteration thus necessitates a change in the second paragraph of the Discussion (lines 1-4) on p. 605 as follows:
"The rates of gluconeogenesis were lower than those observed in hepatocytes from fasted guinea pigs (Arinze and Rowley, 1975), pigs (Clark et al., 1976) and were also lower than those found in 72 hr fasted cats by Gordon and Freedland (1981)."
The authors of this paper regret any confusion caused by these errors.
