“One Model”

Ephesians 5:21-33

Ephesians 5:22-28

Wives, submit to your husbands as to the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior. Now as the church submits to Christ, so also wives should submit to their husbands in everything.

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.

Husbands hold a position that will be challenged. – v.23

For the husband is the head of the wife as Christ is the head of the church, his body, of which he is the Savior.

The position of the husband

• The leadership a husband must assume is his created function.

• The husband exercises Christ like servant hearted self denying leadership.


• “Head of the wife” is a synonym for leader in the Bible.

So Jephthah went with the elders of Gilead, and the people made him head and commander over them. And he repeated all his words before the LORD in Mizpah.- Judges 11:11; 10:18; 2 Samuel 22:44

• Sin did not create headship and submission – it ruined it!

Ephesians 1:3-6

Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.

Husbands live by a pattern worthy of being copied.- vv.25-27

Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.


One action:

• Love was so great that Christ gave himself up.

Two purposes:

• To make the church holy

to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word,


Two purposes:

• To grow the church in the holy life He provided.

to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless


• Christ made the greatest effort to meet the greatest need in order that we might be His greatest glory.

Bottom Line:

To make much of Jesus a husband must make his greatest effort to meet his wife’s greatest need, to seek his wife’s greatest glory.

Husbands must make the greatest effort…

• In humble service

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

To meet his wife’s greatest need…

• Through careful communication

And he made known to us the mystery of his will according to his good pleasure, which he purposed in Christ, to be put into effect when the times will have reached their fulfillment—to bring all things in heaven and on earth together under one head, even Christ. - Ephesians 1:9-10


• Through active participation

And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,- Ephesians 1:13


• Through discerning encouragement

In him we were also chosen, having been predestined according to the plan of him who works out everything in conformity with the purpose of his will, - Ephesians 1:11


• Through forward planning

For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love he predestined us to be adopted as his sons through Jesus Christ, in accordance with his pleasure and will—Ephesians 1:4-5


• Through patient understanding


• Through proactive reconciliation

To seek his wife’s greatest glory…

• Every wife’s greatest glory is to be more like Jesus.

Four practical applications:

• Cultivate your own spiritual life

• Receive Christ’s peace

• Be infused with the Spirit

• Become an agent of God’s Kingdom

• Leadership is not easy.

So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you;
