Changing Our Hearts, Our Habits, and Our Holiness

Chapter 5:1-33


Abandon the Gentile Way:

Futile thinking – useless, pointless, fruitless, and unsuccessful;

Darkened Understanding – there is no Light of Truth nor Wisdom of God;

Separated from God – dead in actions, hopes, and accomplishments;

Hard Hearts – callous, uncaring, merciless, and unsympathetic;

Indulgent to the senses – driven by fulfilling their senses at all costs;

Full of Greed – wanting more and more – money, power, and control;


Take up the Way of Christ

A new attitude of the mind – having the mind of Christ;

Speak truthfully – about and to others and about ourselves;

Deal with Anger – don’t let it simmer;

No Footholds – H.A.L.T – recognize the potential footholds and shut them down;

Be Useful for Others – work is important, but your goal should be to share with those in need, not to stuff your own pockets;

Talk to Build up – no unwholesome, destructive, of corrupt talk;

Compassionate, Kind, and Forgiving – get rid of the bitterness, rage, slander and malice


Others should imitate us, as we imitate Christ; We are to have a life centred on Love

Unconditional and sacrificial

No hint of sinfulness No compromise, not even a hint of an appearance of evil.

Consider everything and see if it could be misinterpreted as evil.

Actions and attitude

Children of light The light of God is the Truth of God

Dispel the darkness around us, and by our lives of truth, the darkness in others


Live as the Wise Wisdom is not ‘smart or clever’, but is given by God and His Holy

Spirit so that we may understand what God is doing and intelligently discern the nature and outcome of things

Walking in wisdom is to walk with diligence and purpose – exactness and blamelessly – with perfection.

Understand His Will Foolishness is not to know God’s will His will is revealed through obedience. By doing His general will, He

will reveal His specific will for you.

Filled with the Spirit It is not a one time thing – it is continuous; just like Asking, Knocking,

and Seeking. It is a filling that is overflowing – affecting our actions and behaviour

just like wine. It may even make you look goofy – like being drunk


It is key to intimacy It is not about dominance, but about willingly give up our rights and

obey It is the opposite of an “independent spirit”.

As to the Lord Not submitting to the Lord, will be reflected in our enforcement of our

rights with others. It will bring about nothing but Strife.

Wives to Husbands It is a submission to be served and loved in a sacrificial manner.

Husbands to Wives It is the humbling of oneself to serve and love sacrificially – laying

aside your rights for hers


The Church to Christ We submit to the Love of Christ We submit to the His cleansing We submit to His restoration

We submit as a bride to her loving groom.

Intimacy with Christ is only found in submission


Imitators of God

A life of Love – unconditional and sacrificial – to put others first.

No Hint of Sinfulness – in attitude and in action. Avoid even the appearance of evil.

Children of Light – dispelling the darkness around us and in others.

Live in Wisdom – understand the thinking of God and the impact of righteousness.

Understand His Will – He will reveal His specific will to you when you obey His general will. No obedience – no revelation.

Filled with the Spirit – it is a continuous thing. Like wine – filling will affect our actions and behaviour. Goofiness may result.


Submission Wives to Husbands – submit as to the Lord – submit to sacrificial

love and service

Husbands to Wives – submit to serve in humility and to love sacrificially – as the Lord

Church to Christ – submit to His love, cleansing, and restoration.
