Common Misconceptions
Many items seem like they’re recyclable because they’re made of plastic
ALL PLASTICS ARE NOT THE SAME
Many plastics have different melting points and cannot be recycled together
What GOES In a Green Bin?
What GOES in a Compost Bin?
Advantages
• Households have reduced their monthly garbage by 44 - 54%
• Helps the environment by reducing greenhouse gas emissions
• Turns waste into useful products such as fertilizer, compost and renewable fuels
• Supports a local green economy
What GOES Into the Garbage
What does NOT go into the Garbage Bin Items contaminated with
food Paint cans Gas bottles Batteries CD’s/DVD’s Paper- Newspapers,
Magazines, Junk Mail, Envelopes
Food tins/drink cans Household plastic packaging Hazardous waste
Impacts of Poor Disposal Food scraps result in
methane greenhouse gas (21 x more
potent than CO2) Methane
Many materials that end up as waste contain toxic substances.
Toxins contamination - air/water
Solutions Reduce, Reuse and Recycle
products with less packaging Give used items to people if
they can be reusable Use cloth towels and ceramic
plates at home instead of paper towels and paper plates
Buy less!
Waste Audit IssuesLooking at EYCI’s Garbage
