WINE IN TASMANIA
About Our Wine
Tasmania’s first experiment with grapevines resulted in a wine that was shown at a Paris
exhibition in 1848. However, after this early start, the island’s wine production all but
disappeared until the 1950s.
The early migrants from Europe recognised the similarities in Tasmania of the soils and
climate with the great grape growing regions of their homelands, and began to challenge
and disprove the theory that Tasmania was too far south for grapes to ripen. Tasmania’s
naturally elegant wines are made from grapes grown in climates similar to those of the
famous European wines - with mild summers and long autumn days that ripen the grapes
providing elegance and intensity of flavor. We now produce elegant cool climate wines such
as Pinot Noir, sparkling wines, Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet Sauvignon
and Pinot Gris. Tasmania enjoys a national and international reputation as a leading
producer of some of Australia’s premium wines, with its Pinot Noir and sparkling wines in
particular winning high praise and plenty of trophies from wine judges and critics alike
Today, Tasmania enjoys a global reputation as a leading producer of premium cool climate
wines, winning high praise and accolades from wine judges and critics alike.
Terroir
The Tasmanian landscape is dominated by dolerite-capped mountains that shelter the
state’s wine regions from high winds and rainfall. On the lower slopes, the vineyard soils are
formed from ancient sandstones and mudstones and also from more recent river sediments
and igneous rocks of volcanic origin.
Cool climate advantage
Tasmania has a moderate maritime climate, cooled by prevailing westerly winds off the
Southern Ocean, providing conditions free of extremes in temperature. Mild spring and
summer temperatures, with warm autumn days and cool nights allow the grapes to ripen
slowly on the vine, resulting in maximum varietal flavour development. This is achieved
without losing that essential natural acidity that gives wine both freshness and balance.
Vintage
The Tasmanian vintage usually begins from mid-March, at the peak of the dry autumn when
ripening occurs, to late May before the risk of frost and rain.
Vintage variations are greater in Tasmania than any other Australian region. This vintage
variation is reflected in each unique wine and makes for an insightful tasting of multiple
vintages from the same producer.

EAST COAST WINERIES
DEVILS CORNER 1 SHERBOURNE ROAD, APSLAWN
On Tasmania’s beautiful East Coast you’ll find Devil’s Corner Cellar Door, home to Australia’s
most popular Pinot Noir. Enjoy a tasting of the Devil’s Corner range of wines while looking
over ‘The Hazards’ on the Freycinet Peninsular and Moulting Lagoon, a wetland of
international environmental significance. ‘The Fishers’ serve freshly shucked oysters and
seafood straight from the Freycinet Marine Farm. Tombolo Café dish up pizza straight from
the wood-fired oven, with espresso coffee and gelato a specialty.
FREYCINET VINEYARD 15919 TASMAN HIGHWAY, APSLAWN
Original viticulture pioneers of our region, the 15 Ha family owned vineyard is recognised for
its 5- star award winning wines. 100% grown, produced and bottled on estate with
uncompromising dedication and passion since 1979 making Freycinet Vineyard the first
commercial winery on the East Coast. Relax and enjoy great wines, Tasmanian cheeses,
home grown extra virgin olive oil and great coffee.
GALA WINES 14891 TASMAN HIGHWAY, CRANBROOK
In 1821, Gala Estate was granted to James Amos, originally of Galashiels in the borders of
Scotland, the family now make up the 5th, 6th and 7th generations of descendants still
living, loving and farming this land. The original farm produced flour for the gold rush and
ran sheep for wool. Today, the family focus is on Fine Merino Wool, Award Winning Wines
and a little cropping on the side, it is also the second oldest family run business in Tasmania.
MILTON VINEYARD 14635 TASMAN HIGHWAY, CRANBROOK
Was first farmed in 1826 initially for fine Tasmania wool but is now produces fine cool
climate wines. Located at 42 Degrees south on the dry sunny Freycinet Coast. The grapes
are grown on free draining red loam liberally sprinkled with dolerite rocks. The vineyard has
a unique micro-climate that suits the ancient grape Pinot Noir. Also on the 13 hectare
vineyard are plantings of the aromatics Pinot Gris and Gewürztraminer. Milton focuses on
producing small quantities of handmade wine with close attention being paid to every detail
in the vineyard and the wines represent this exact work.
SPRINGVALE WINES 130 SPRING VALE ROAD, CRANBROOK
Continuing in the tradition of hard work and innovation established by William Lyne in 1826,
Rodney and Lyn Lyne have planted 14.5 hectares of wine grapes at Spring Vale, principally
Pinot Noir. The vineyard began in 1986 when a small area 0.8 hectares were planted with
Pinot Noir. The Freycinet Coast is the driest part of the state, with an average annual rainfall
of 550mm. Warm days and cool nights are a result of this climate and ideal for slow ripening
and excellent flavor development. The soil at Spring Vale is mostly a fertile clay loam, with
the subsoil varying from porous friable loam with rock to medium-heavy clay. Drainage is
excellent throughout the vineyard and the pH of the soil is around 6.5
CRAIGIE KNOWE 80 GLEN GALA ROAD, CRANBROOK
The vines at Craigie Knowe were established in 1979 by then Hobart dentist John Austwick.
John lovingly planted the vines across 5 hectares making his wine on site until he made the
difficult decision to sell his beloved vineyard in 2009. Glenn and Sandy purchased the
property in 2013, and like John, love Craigie with the same passion and enthusiasm John
had...his legacy continues. Their wine is now made off site allowing them to concentrate on
their vines. Open by appointment for tastings, vineyard tours and lunch platters.
