Establishing a Best Practices Guide

Problem Statement: Data Management/ Reporting

Ideally, all entomological surveillance data generated by DoD laboratories, particularly by projects funded by GEIS, would be preserved, managed and made available at a central source. In exchange for data deposits, partners could expect custom products and services that add additional value to this data in direct support of their efforts. This approach would be in line with an overall integrated vector management strategy designed to support evidence-based decision making to reduce the risk of vector-borne disease transmission among U.S. military personnel.

A central repository for data would provide entomologists and other public health personnel with permissions-based access to current and historical surveillance data to identify gaps in surveillance coverage and guide future research. Climate, land cover and other data related to vector ecology but not directly measured by the surveillance program could be combined with entomological and epidemiological surveillance data from other sources to produce high quality vector and disease hazard maps on a routine basis. Finally, this data could also be used to generate reports on the global impact of GEIS funded entomological surveillance.

Challenges

All entomological surveillance data must be standardized and meet minimum essential reporting requirements

Communication between partners and the managers of the data repository is essential from the planning to final reporting stages of surveillance activities

Partners must be able to request and receive products and services (i.e. distribution maps, data summaries, distribution models, etc.) in a timely manner

Data submitters must have control over the timing of data releases
