the middle of summer. Hot sun, green grass, a multitude of folksy log-centered statues... It’s hard to imagine a more perfect venue for a three-day bluesy music festival. Luckily, we don’t have to.

For nearly 20 years, the Mount Baker Rhythm & Blues Festival has proven to be a small yet powerful festival, making the summer even hotter with musicians that rock hard, from legendary headliners to local artists. This year, it will be taking place on August 1, 2 and 3.

Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters, which inspired him to pursue his musical career in Chicago, coming up in the heyday of modern blues in the area. Today, he remains an incredibly talented guitar player and performer whose music smoothly navigates blues, rock, and even gospel and doo-wop.

Like all music festivals worth their salt, the three-day rhythm & blues extravaganza will include vendors selling

the weekend as possible. The performers go on until around midnight, at which point, an indoor All-Star Jam commences, and the rockin’ doesn’t stop until 2am.

As an added bonus, after rocking out all day to a delightful variety of ass-kicking musicians, festival-goers will have a chance on both Saturday and Sunday evening to win a gorgeous Fender Stratocaster guitar in a raffle. The proceeds of the raffle, which is put on by the Festival, along with Bikers Fighting Cancer and Hugo Helmer Music, will go toward supporting local families battling cancer.

Day passes for Saturday or Sunday are $60-$65, while a weekend pass costs $125. Only the weekend pass includes free camping and admission to the acclaimed after-hours All Star Jam. VIP packages, which include backstage access, VIP camping, and a festival T-shirt, among other amenities, go for $170, and there are only 100 available. All told, the festival has 2,000 tickets available, and is expected to sell out.

The talent will include such unique acts as 12-year-old guitar prodigy Caspian Coberly; Chicago-based gutsy rockers The Steepwater Band; spiritual leader and gospel artist Rev. Deb Engelhardt; Australian roots sensation Harper; and the mesmerizing Scott Holt, a veteran of Buddy Guy’s band and a gifted artist.

Though these names alone are enough to get a blues-loving heart pounding, the star attraction of this year’s festival will be the one and only Elvin Bishop. Bishop has worked with legendary blues musicians such as Clifton Chenier, John Lee Hooker, B.B. King, and The Allman Brothers. Growing up in first Iowa and then Oklahoma, Bishop was influenced by Jimmy Reed,

food and crafts and a beer garden. A weekend pass will also include free camping, a staple of a solid summer music festival. The campground will open at

10am on Friday, Aug. 1. While pets and fireworks are forbidden, free showers are included (soap comes with the shower, but you’ve got to bring your own towel). There are also 55 full RV hookups, available for $40 each.

The music starts on Friday, Aug. 1, at 5pm. On Saturday and Sunday, the music will start earlier, packing as much rocking rhythm into

summer with its most diverse lineup yet. This popular, family-friendly, and FREE summer outdoor music series is celebrating its fifth season on Bay Street and its tenth anniversary since its alley origins.

“Downtown Sounds appeals to anyone who loves music and community,” says Lindsey Payne, event manager. “People love it because they can come downtown, listen to fun music, bump into friends, have a beer, and watch their kids hula hoop. It’s a great community event.”

The street concerts are held on Wednesdays from July 9 to August 6 on Bay Street between Woods Coffee and the Pickford Cinema, with doors opening at 5:30pm and music from 6-9pm. Each concert includes a warm-up act. Here’s a look at this season’s lineup.

July 9: MarchFourth Marching Band with Galactic Cirque Troop – Hailing from Portland, MarchFourth is just as funky as its hometown. Part circus troop, part musical extravaganza, MarchFourth (aka M4) features unique marching band-themed costumes and a kaleidoscope of dancers, stilt walkers, drummers, horn players, and guitarists. They performed here two years ago and are back for a

journey from the swamps of Louisiana to the African jungle via American funk, rock, and jazz (www.marchfourthmarchingband.com). Galactic Cirque Troupe opens the show. This group of local hula-hoop performers hoop with single, multiple, and LED hoops.

July 16: The Prime Time Band with The Austerman File – Comprised of musicians from Bellingham, Seattle, and Vancouver, this R&B / soul band performs original tunes and covers influenced by Earth, Wind and Fire, Stevie Wonder, and Quincy Jones. It’s worth noting that this performance is your last chance to see them, as the band will be disbanding after this date to pursue other projects. Opening the act, The Austerman File plays a fusion of reggae, funk, and blues.

July 23: Polecat with Hillstomp – Formed in Bellingham, the popular 5-member Polecat mixes bluegrass, country, Celtic, rock, reggae, and world music into their sound for wide audience appeal (www.polecatmusic.com). Portland duo Hillstomp specializes in “junkbox blues” on a variety of homemade instruments including buckets, cans, and barbecue lids – plus guitars – for a distinctive brand of hill country blues stomp (www.hillstomp.com).

July 30: Publish the Quest with 3 on the Tree – Seattle’s Publish the Quest performs danceable music that combines blues, rock, ska, and world pop with a thumping bass, horns, guitar, and powerful lyrics (www.publishthequest.com). Bellingham’s 3 on the Tree, a funky fresh jam band, plays a mix of acoustic and electric sounds with songs ranging from political to

introspective to getting funky on the dance floor.

August 6: Voyager with The Trees: A Rush Tribute – Feel nostalgic for a certain decade? Voyager specializes in ‘80s rock / glam rock. Join these Bellingham intergalactic youngsters for a family-friendly version of this music genre. The Trees: A Rush Tribute are a group of top Bellingham musicians who have come together for one reason only: to RUSH!

For extra family fun, Downtown Sounds features 3-4 food vendors per concert as well as Boundary Bay’s beverage garden for 21+. Rocket Donuts sponsors The Kids Corner (8 and under) for entertainment with street chalk, bubbles, and activities by Play Lab.

Festival has grown into the premiere training ground for young musicians in the Pacific Northwest. Featuring internationally acclaimed faculty and guest artists from the world’s most distinguished orchestras, conservatories and schools of music, Marrowstone is an assiduously sought-after citation on one’s musical resume. The festival may have moved from its namesake island, but the dedication to superb musicianship remains.

“The festival’s first seasons were on Marrowstone Island,” said Music Director Stephen R. Radcliffe. “We then moved to Port Townsend. As the Festival grew in enrollment, reputation

and stature, more professional facilities were required to accommodate an expanded program with three orchestras and a robust chamber music program. We are now located on the campus of Western Washington University in Bellingham.”

Some rather famous people can claim one or more summers at Marrowstone.

“There are many accomplished musicians that have passed through the Marrowstone program over the years,” Radcliffe said. “Among them are Rolf Smedvig who at age 18, after attending Marrowstone, became the principal trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra and is now lead trumpet with the Empire Brass Quintet.”

Anyone familiar with that aggregation will recognize the quintet’s dozens of recordings. Steven Ansell, principal viola with the Boston Symphony Orchestra is also a major classical recording artist.

“Marrowstone alumni play in virtually every major symphony orchestra in America, and in many abroad, Radcliffe said. “But there are also those that have been successful in other fields as well,

such as David Horsey, three-time Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist.”

While the students at Marrowstone are a distinguished group simply for having gotten in, the faculty reads like a Who’s Who.

“The internationally acclaimed faculty

(many are members of major symphony orchestras and professors at noted conservatories of music) are the heart and soul of the Festival,” Radcliffe said. “This season, the Music Director Emeritus of the Seattle Symphony, Gerard Schwarz, will be conducting the orchestra in the Sunday, August 3, concert.”

Because Marrowstone is primarily a teaching festival, the performances focus on a specific category of works.

“Our season repertoire is a little different from other orchestra offerings in Bellingham,” Radcliffe said. “We play the large romantic symphonic works that require huge orchestral forces. It’s a lot of fun and an amazing experience for both the musicians and the audiences alike.

This year’s performances begin on Thursday, July 31 at 7:30pm with Faculty Chamber Music at Western Washington University’s Performing Arts Center (PAC). Saturday, August 2, at 7:30pm, the Marrowstone Chamber Orchestra will perform at the PAC. The Marrowstone Festival Orchestras will take the stage on Sunday, August 3, 3pm at the PAC with Maestro Schwarz at the podium.

Marrowstone Makes Musicians – Fabled Festival Flourishes

The week of July 6-12, twenty world-class musicians will converge in Blaine to teach students age 12-19. New programs for 2014 include A Cappella Choir, Songwriting, and Musical Theater. The music camp provides a fun, inspiring, positive educational experience for teens. It is a tremendous opportunity to learn from and play with huge talents from across the

Students who attend music camp find that they experience remarkable progress in one week. One student said, “The camp was more fun day by day because I’ve been learning and playing and sounding better at my instrument.” Another student wrote, “During private lessons and class, the instructors gave great insight and made me, musically, a better artist.” And another student commented, “Both my instructors make me laugh so hard, I can’t believe I can have so much fun while learning so much.”

The Drayton Harbor Music Festival presents free noon concerts Monday through Friday at the scenic G St. Plaza in downtown Blaine, and by-donation evening concerts at the beautiful Performing Arts Center in Blaine. 2014 Festival Sponsor Semiahmoo Resort is hosting evening events Monday through Thursday.

This year’s Blockbuster Opening Concert is Pearl Django with special guests from the Festival Faculty, Sunday, July 6 at 7pm in the Blaine PAC. The Blaine Jazz Faculty will perform JAZZ “a few of my favorite things . . .” at 7pm Tuesday, July 8 at the PAC. The Classical to Contemporary Faculty feature the music of Gene Pritsker on Wednesday, July 9, 7pm at the PAC.

The Festival Faculty turns on the fully orchestrated sounds of a Big Band at the Big Band Benefit, 7:30pm Thursday, July 10 at the Semiahmoo Resort. The Friday night Student Showcase features energizing student performances

Blind Boys of Alabama to perform at Lincoln Theatre

The Blind Boys of Alabama return to the Historic Lincoln Theatre on Friday, July 11 at 8pm. This is their first appearance at the Lincoln since their stunning sold-out concert in 2009.

The five-time Grammy Award winning rockin’, soul gospel group from Alabama first sang together in 1944. Since then, the group’s output has spanned seven decades of tours and appearances, and produced a successful discography including their new album, produced by Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, I’ll Find a Way.

The performing core of the group consists of eight musicians, including four blind singers, original founding member Jimmy Carter, Benjamin Moore, Eric “Ricky” McKinnie, and Paul Beasley, plus the guitarist and musical director, Joey Williams. Rounding out the band will be a keyboard player, bass player, and drummer.

Since their formation, the Blind Boys of Alabama have made it their self-proclaimed goal to spiritually uplift audiences. The group has been a source of inspiration for those with disabilities. In the words of Ricky McKinnie, “Our disability doesn’t have to be a handicap. It’s not about what you can’t do. It’s about what you do. And what we do is sing good gospel music.”

Nearly seventy-five years after they hit their first notes together, the Blind Boys of Alabama are exceptional not only in their longevity, but also in the breadth of their catalog and their relevance to contemporary roots music. Since 2000, they’ve won five Grammys and four Gospel Music Awards, and have delivered their spiritual message to countless listeners.

Local favorite, The Chris Eger Band featuring the Seattle’s Powerhouse Horns, will open the show.

year and going strong. The 2014 Festival dates are August 1-3 from 10am-6pm on Friday and Saturday, and 10am-5pm on Sunday. More than 275 juried artists, crafters, musicians, performers and food vendors will greet you from the first booth on 10th and Commercial Street in Anacortes, spanning all the way to the waterfront. If history repeats itself, more than 90,000 people are expected to walk the promenade over the three days of the Festival.

New this year, and an element you most likely won’t find at other street festivals, is the Indie craft area, Ink Alley. Located on the east side of 6th St., it features 25 fresh and high quality artisans who embrace the Indie craft aesthetic by creating art with sustainable or repurposed materials.

Also new this year is a third performance area. The Port Dock, next to the new Waterfront Pub, will feature circus performance art, dance and acoustic music. The music on Main Stage near the Hideout Bar on 3rd and Commercial will focus on lively music, and the 8th Street Stage, near the Reunion Wine Bar, will showcase “softer” sounds. You will enjoy street performers such as guitarists, fiddlers or even a whole mariachi band at many of the intersections as you travel the streets of the Festival.

Check out Island Eatery and Food Court at 3rd and Commercial for food vendors galore, or enjoy tasty wares from one of the many food trucks on your way.

Rita James, Creative Manager for the festival, is excited to welcome many new vendors and artisans this year, as well as

participating in the “longest art display in the world” could take upwards of six hours, according to James. She strongly recommends visiting the working artist area (Saturday and Sunday only) and, of course, the annual dockside Fine Art show. The theme this year for the competitive art show was “Air, Earth, Water” and was juried by Patricia Watkinson. Also for your viewing pleasure will be submissions to the Allen Family Focus Gallery, which showcases five regional

artists, rounded out by the Youth Art Exhibition. The opening event for the art show is July 26 at 6pm. The exhibition is closed on the 27th, but will be open again Monday, July 28 through August 3.

Chris Moench, owner of Axis of Hope Prayer Wheels, has participated in the Festival for more than a decade. He says having the Festival on his calendar gives him an incentive to create a body of new work specifically for the show.

If you want to start the festival early, you can run with your enthusiasm by participating in the Art Dash. This half-marathon, 10K and 5K will take place on Saturday, July 26. The Art Dash is a partnership between the Festival and City

of Anacortes Parks & Recreation, with proceeds benefiting public art.

The Anacortes Arts Festival Giving Program, funded through the Festival, has announced they will be giving $55k in grants this year for scholarships and to support school programs.

Skagit Artists Together creates collaborative opportunities with the goal of bringing together community members with visual arts. Together, they focus on integrating visual arts into the community by making art spaces and education available, supporting artists and encouraging artists to work with other segments of the community.

Each year, Skagit Artists Together hosts a juried studio tour, in order to give community members an opportunity to view creative spaces that are not usually open to the public. Destinations in past studio tours have included the workspaces of painters, ceramicists, photographers, glass workers, quilters, jewelers, woodworkers, and many others.

This year’s self-directed tour will be taking place on Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20. Anyone interested in visiting these artists can find a brochure and map at the official website of Skagit Artists Together, http://www.skagitartiststogether.com.

While on the tour, you are encouraged to ask questions and engage with the artists; they are opening up their workspaces to the public in order to engage with them and discuss the visual art(s) they pursue.

The 2014 jurors, who helped in selecting the artists whose spaces will be seen, are Trish Harding of Studio UFO, Dakota Arts owner Craig Lemley, and artist Susan Cohen Thompson.

Skagit Artists Together have been doing studio tours since the group was founded in 2003. This tradition is an integral part of the non-profit’s goal to support visual art in the county and surrounding area.

Summer Repertory has presented lineups of comedies, dramas, and musicals in the intimate black box Walton Theatre. This summer, the season will boast three shows, Talley’s Folly, Last of the Red Hot Lovers, and Becky’s New Car.

Lanford Wilson’s Talley’s Folly is a romantic comedic drama. Lamby Hedge directs the story of Matt Friedman, a bookish Jewish accountant, and Sally Talley, a girl from a conservative Protestant family, in Missouri in 1944. Matt is determined to win Sally’s heart despite her fears of family disapproval. Talley’s Folly is the winner of both the 1980 Pulitzer Prize and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play of the Season. The New York Post calls it “A funny, sweet, touching and marvelously written and contrived love poem for an apple and an orange.”

Ken Michels will direct Neil Simon’s 1969 comedy Last of the Red Hot Lovers. Barney Cashman is having a mid-life crisis. This hilarious play is the story of his last-ditch attempt to join the sexual revolution despite having been faithfully married for 23 years. He pursues three extramarital affairs: Elaine, a neurotic and foul-mouthed philanderer; Bobbi, an unstable 20-something actress; and Jeannette, a downtrodden housewife who happens to be married to Barney’s best friend. The New York Times calls it “as witty as ever, perhaps wittier.”

Speaking of mid-life crises, Becky, of Steven Dietz’s Becky’s New Car directed by Beth Leonard, is no stranger to them. Middle-aged, working a dead-end job at a car dealership and trapped in an unsatisfying marriage, Becky wants out and doesn’t have a clue how to get there. But one night, a millionaire appears at her work with an impossible offer: a brand new life. Dietz’s script, teeming with deadpan humor and plot twists, “takes the audience on a smart, comic cruise through the perils of middle-aged longing and regret” (Variety) and “is that perfect blend of hilarious comedy and substantial weight, a story about choices and consequences that could believably happen to anyone” (Broadway Hour).

The MBT Rep series plays July 15 through August 10. Performances Tuesday through Saturday start at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday matinees are at 3:00 p.m. General admission is $25, and student tickets cost $12.50 with valid ID.

BAAY Produces Two Musicals This Summer – Kaleb Van Rijswijck, a Roosevelt University student and alum of the Bellingham Arts Academy for Youth (BAAY), will direct two shows this month. The Music Man by Meredith Willson will feature a cast of 9-15-year-olds. Con man Harold Hill travels to River City, Iowa to cheat the townspeople with an elaborate scheme, but ends up falling for the town’s misunderstood librarian. Jason Robert Brown’s contemporary piece, 13, tells the coming-of-age story of a young boy dealing with his Bar Mitzvah, his parent’s divorce, and middle school. Students between the ages of 12 and 16 will be featured in this challenging musical. The Music Man runs July 9-12 at 7pm, and July 12-13 at 2pm. 13 runs July 17-19 at 7pm, and July 19-20 at 2pm. The Bite of Skagit at Waterfront Park in Anacortes

Come and celebrate summer with a wonderful afternoon at The Bite of Skagit on Saturday, July 26 from noon-4pm. The Bite of Skagit is an annual fundraiser that is sponsored, organized, and hosted by North Coast Credit Union for the benefit of the Skagit Food Distribution Center – linking farms to food banks. Proceeds support the Skagit Food Distribution Center’s efforts to increase availability of local produce for families that rely on Skagit County food banks, meal programs, and other anti-hunger initiatives. Community Action of Skagit County operates the Skagit Food Distribution Center.
