In today’s society, it is easy to place value on a person based on outward appearance. What if this outward

Michael T. Mathis, a burn survivor, founded the BCRF in 1989. Mathis had a dream to help burned children be children and have happy, healthy, and productive lives. The BCRF offers many programs to benefit the children and their families such as emotional and sociological support, counseling, social re-entry, and financial support.

With over 280,000 children burned annually in the United States, the BCRF has made a significant impact by helping 119,000 children though their mission is not complete. They offer three recovery programs: burn support services, providing funding for recovery costs; Phoenix House, a ten-bed recovery house; and Camp Phoenix, which is an annual retreat. Join the Fun!

Two Worlds Collide It was two years ago that Mike Mulder,

singer and songwriter for Memphis Rain Band, shared a meal with Michael Mathis, founder of Burned Children Recovery Foundation (BCRF), at a “Men’s Night Out” in Lynden at the fairgrounds. Mathis sought out Mulder a year after this meeting, and the two have since partnered on various projects such as East 542 Music Festival, Raspberry Festival, Camano/Stanwood Fair, and Scuba H2O Adventure Show, with Memphis Rain providing the entertainment and BCRF providing the purpose. The partnership has worked to date, culminating in a sense, this past month at Mt. Baker Rotary’s annual fundraising auction with an outpouring of support for the BCRF. The event raised $82,000 in 15 minutes! These funds will assist the foundation in providing services for their Camp Phoenix Program held at Lake Samish each year.The Band

Memphis Rain is an original classic rock act. In the past three years, the band has been held together by bass player Dave Bulger’s penetrating harmonies, Brad Chrysler’s lush keyboard patches, Mike Mulder’s singing and songwriting, and soundman Kevin Cowden’s instinctive touch at the console. As one fan put it, “Memphis Rain is a very good band. It can go toe-to-toe with anything out

Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens – This event is a fundraiser for Skagit Valley College’s Music and Drama Department’s participation in the world famous Fringe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland in August. Elegies for Angels, Punks, and Raging Queens is a song cycle which features songs and monologues inspired by the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and Edgar Lee Masters’ Spoon River Anthology. Each of the monologues is written from the perspective of characters who’ve died from AIDS, and the songs represent the feelings

the Beach celebrating a milestone… old Bill himself turned 450 this year. The world-class Shakespeare Festival has a double treat in store for Northwest theatregoers: a pairing of the Bard’s two fantasies.

“We are very excited to celebrate our 25 years of bringing Shakespeare to life in Vancouver,” said Bard Artistic Director Christopher Gaze. “To salute that legacy, we are revisiting two productions that our audiences truly loved. It is our birthday gift to Vancouver as we and the rest of the world celebrate the 450th anniversary year of Shakespeare’s birth. I’m proud and confident that it will be a landmark season.”

Those enamored of A Midsummer Night’s Dream will be in Elizabethan heaven this year. We’ve already had Benjamin Britten’s opera version at Western Washington University, Northwest Ballet’s interpretation is coming in June, and Free Key Productions will be staging an August production set in and around that fabulous tree behind the Firehouse Performing Arts Center.

Bard’s version is a reimagining of the beloved Dean Paul Gibson production

from 2006. Gibson is the Associate Artistic Director of Bard on the Beach and his interpretations are the stuff of…well…fantasy. Equally talented Meg Roe will direct The Tempest as the other mainstage production. Her previous production of the classic was staged in 2008. Both fantasies will feature actors familiar to

secretly marry Posthumus. The enthralling story that follows is driven by love, jealousy, betrayal and redemption and features a host of memorable characters, including one of Shakespeare’s most finely etched female leads.

Rounding out the second stage season is another in the series of Bard

going to be an experience where students will be pushed to their limits,” says Van Rijswijck. Older students of BAAY, between the ages of twelve and sixteen, will be featured in this challenging musical.

BAAY’s founder, David Post, says Van Rijswijck “is a major creative force and can bring so much to the table, from being choreographer to lighting and set designer to stage director. What is great about Kaleb is he gets it all done with a light touch, happy along the way… He has the ability to help the beginner feel encouraged and can help the more advanced student get pushed to a higher level. His attention to detail and his ability to be a great role model make him a wonderful instructor.”

Blue Musings at Modern Classics – The first installment of Sharon Kingston’s exploration into using color as a language will focus on blue. 22nd Annual MoNA Art Auctionby Joanna Nesbit

On Saturday, June 21, La Conner’s Museum of Northwest Art (MoNA), 121 S. First St., will hold its 22nd annual Art Auction, the largest fundraiser of the year for the museum. Doors open at 5pm. With some 350 pieces by emerging and master artists, the auction includes a range of styles with something for everyone – from

paintings, prints, photographs, and glass to sculpture, ceramics, art jewelry, and textiles.

The event includes a silent auction, a juried live auction of some 70 pieces, as well as wine, beer, and appetizers catered by 11 local businesses, such as Wild Iris, Nell Thorn, and Chuckanut Manor. The silent auction takes place in the Museum and will roll out the art in four sections of 20-minute intervals. The live auction begins at

7:15pm in an outdoor tent, kicking off with the exciting Golden Raffle ticket drawing. A $100 Golden Raffle ticket allows you to enter the drawing, and one lucky winner is entitled to choose a piece from the live auction for no extra cost (you must be present to win). Only 100 Golden Raffle tickets are available.

On Friday evening (June 20), from 5-8pm, ticket holders are also invited to the Museum to watch several artists at work.

orchestras around North America and other renowned musicians come together to form a world-class orchestra for five Bellingham Festival of Music concerts under the direction of Artistic Director Michael Palmer. This year’s festival runs from July 5-20, and the five concerts are performed at WWU’s Performing Arts Center, but other associated events occur at other venues. These include two performances at the Bellingham Cruise Terminal, two free concerts at Whatcom Museum’s Rotunda Room, and two master classes with top guest musicians.

It’s a unique opportunity for area music lovers. “For 20 years the Bellingham Festival of Music has brought world-class professional musicians to Bellingham and Whatcom County to create outstanding musical performances rarely heard even in cities much larger,” says Robert Lynch, chair of the board of directors.

violinist Stefan Jackiw (pictured), a great favorite with festival audiences, leads off with his performance of the Violin Concerto No. 2 in G minor, Op. 63. The young New York City resident began playing at age 5 and has been hailed as one of his generation’s most significant artists. He made a European debut at age 14 playing with the Philharmonia Orchestra in London.

Tuesday, July 8, 7:30 pm: Flutist Christina Smith (pictured)and the Calidore String Quartet share top billing. Principal festival flutist, Smith is a member of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and

has appeared as a soloist in many major pieces. The international prize-winning Calidore String Quartet is considered one of the most exciting young ensembles to emerge in recent years and includes Bellingham’s own Jerry Berry, who began viola studies with a local teacher at age 5. The quartet includes violinist Jeffrey Meyers, violinist Ryan Meehan, and Canadian cellist Estelle Choi.

Thursday, July 10, 7:30pm: The Calidore String Quartet (pictured) will present a recital featuring Beethoven’s Op. 18 No. 1, Tenebrae by Golijov and Schubert’s String Quartet No. 14, “Death and the Maiden.”

Saturday, July 12, 7:30pm: Under guest conductor Whitney Reader, the concert version of Mozart’s opera The Abduction from the Seraglio features

performances by Metropolitan Opera star soprano Lisette Oropesa (pictured), as well as Wesley Rogers, Joanna Mongiardo, and Simeon Esper. Local historian/author Brian Griffin appears as Klass. Lynch says this opera should be fun for the whole family.

Wednesday, July 16, 7:30pm: The orchestra performs Weber, Mozart, and Schumann with guest pianist Richard Goode (pictured) playing Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 25 in C Major. A New York native and

principally a chamber musician, Goode didn’t perform as a soloist until he was 47. He is co-Artistic Director of Marlboro Music School and Festival in Vermont.

Sunday, July 20, 7:30pm: Renowned Spanish guitarist Pablo Sáinz Villegas (pictured above) returns to Bellingham to local audiences’ delight to perform in the festival finale, which also features the Festival Chorus. A sought-after soloist, Sáinz Villegas is known for his soulful renditions and rounded guitar tone. It’s a concert not to be missed.

Two Master Classes with Christina Smith and Pablo Villegas are free for the public to observe. These classes are unique opportunities to see an artist up close in teaching mode, says Lynch. Smith’s flute Master Class will be held Tuesday, July 8 and Villegas’ guitar master class is on Saturday, July 19, both at Christ the Servant Lutheran Church, 2600 Lakeway Dr., from 10am-noon.

Skagit Wedding Tour. The tour will take place from 10am-5pm at nine of the most beautiful wedding venues in Skagit County. Each venue will have a ceremony and reception setup and will be filled with talented wedding professionals to answer all of their planning questions. works, A Midsummer Night’s Dream has it all: comedy, fairies, romance, transformation, and a play within a play. The upcoming Northwest Ballet Theatre production will be the best of the best, bringing the fantasy to brilliant life.

By taking Shakespeare’s story and expressing it through dance, the production creates an unmatched experience for its audiences, says artistic director and choreographer John Bishop.

“Ballets in general have the unique ability to combine music, movement and expression, through pantomime, together in a way that words and acting alone cannot,” Bishop explained. “You can just sit back and open your senses to what you are seeing, hearing and imagining.”

There is quite a bit of imagining to be done. Though the show will include gorgeous costumes and luscious sets, the magical world spun by Shakespeare and brought to living color by the dancers is what keeps directors and audiences coming back, year after year. By sending human characters into a mystical realm, with confusing and humorous results, the story plays on our humanity.

“I have always liked the two contrasting worlds, one of humans and the other of fairies,” Bishop said. “Like Romeo and Juliet, another play by Shakespeare later made into a ballet, audiences enjoy the genius in the story lines.”

Northwest Ballet Theatre presents A Midsummer Night’s DreamThough this is the fourth time the

Northwest Ballet Theatre has put on the show, Bishop promises a fresh, thought-out take on the piece.

“I have used some other music by Mendelssohn to develop the storyline and have added a few duets and solos that add to the overall virtuosity of the dancing,” he said. “For me, music holds

the key to the choreography and how I can bring out the most in my cast.”

The cast includes local talents such as Josh Deininger as Oberon, Chloe Johnston as Titania, queen of the fairies, Hailey Forsberg as Hermia, Delci Syvertson as Helena, Ryann Lewis as Hippolyta, Julian Young as Lysander, and Ashley Henderson as the delightfully

mischievous Puck. For many, this will be an expansion on their previously seen talents, Bishop says.

“These familiar faces are joined by Ryan Sims of the Olympic Ballet and Seattle dancer Warren Woo, both of whom bring a high level of professionalism to the stage,” Bishop says. “The dancers will be joined by a few

actors, all the better to merge the theatrical with the ballet.”

“In my ballet, I have used some actors to blend with the dancers, and this has worked very well,” Bishop says. “It has everything you want in a ballet. Charm, elegance, humor and brilliant choreography.”

The ballet will be showing for two weekends, at two different locations. A Midsummer Night’s Dream will premier at 7:30pm on June 6 at the Mount

Baker Theatre in Bellingham, and show again the following night at the same time. The next weekend (June 14-15), it will be showing at McIntyre Hall in Mount Vernon. The Saturday show will be at 7:30pm, while the final show will be a matinee starting at 2pm.

Tickets will range from $24 to $35, depending on venue and seats, with a 20 percent discount available for students, seniors, and military personnel with ID. Tickets are expected to go quickly, so don’t wait! The show will be a wonderful Shakespearean romp, in the most gorgeous sense. John Bishop said it best when he encouraged one and all to come.

“If you haven’t seen a ballet yet, see this one! You can’t go wrong,” he said. “It is entertaining but it also has some unbelievable dancing by the principals and soloists.”

enjoying our amazing Pacific Northwest summer will not have to wait long. With Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema and the Elizabeth Park Live Concert Series, there are tons of opportunities to get out and make the most of the gorgeous weather.

Ben Kinney & Keller Williams Realty will be sponsoring the fifteenth season of Fairhaven Outdoor Cinema. Every Saturday from June 21 through August 23, films are projected onto the 30-foot screen at the Village Green in historic Fairhaven. Tickets are $5, and kids under five, get free admission. Every movie is preceded by live entertainment from local

performers, and food selections include kettle corn and cuisine from Fairhaven Pizza and Prawns.

The season begins with the adventure-comedy “The Goonies” on June 21. Disney’s latest princess hit, “Frozen,” plays June 28. In July, you can treat yourself to the Oscar favorite “Gravity” on the 5th; Pixar’s underwater adventure “Finding Nemo” on the 12th; Kevin Bacon’s star maker “Footloose” on the 19th; and the wildly popular “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” on the 26th. For August, the month starts off with the baseball coming-of-age story “The Sandlot” on the 2nd; the already much-loved “The Lego Movie” on the 9th; newest J.J. Abrams-installment “Star Trek into Darkness” on August 16th; and the season ends with the fairy tale / satirical classic “The Princess Bride” on August 23rd.

Movies play after dark, no matter the weather, with ground seating available (bring your blankets) and limited chair seating in the surrounding brick areas. If you’re in the mood for a night of live music, stay close to Elizabeth Park. Every Thursday from June 26 to August 28 from 6-8pm, there will be free, family-friendly concerts starting at 6pm sponsored by the Eldridge Society for History and Preservation.

The band to open the season on June 26th will be the Legendary Chucklenuts, a blues rock / R&B band who predominantly cover the Allman Brothers, Rolling Stones, Van Morrison, the Doors, Led Zeppelin, and others. In July, guitarist Tim McHugh reunites with the Lost Poets to make electrifying folk rock on the 3rd. The Clearbrook Dixie Band takes over on the 10th with traditional jazz and swing, and is followed by the bluegrass band Prozac Mountain Boys on the 17th. Yogoman Burning Band will show off their good-times dance music on the 24th, and melodic Celtic folk-rock band Maggie’s Fury will be featured on the 31st. In August, political folk / alternative rock musician Dana Lyons plays on the 7th, and is followed by the groovy rock,

soul, funk, and disco music of Luke Warm and the Moderates on the 14th. Classic and indie dance rock band, bandZandt, plays on the 21st, and closing out the season on the 28th will be the Penny Stinkers’ eclectic Americana and folk cabaret.

An Evening Concert Series sponsored by Bellingham Parks and Recreation will take place at Boulevard Park on four consecutive Saturday nights from 7-9pm. The Polyrhythmics with an afro-beat and horn-driven funk will play on July 19 followed by Skamania with a mix of Ska, Raggae and Caribbean on July 26. B’rer Rabbit will bring folk-stomp Americana to the stage on August 2 and Cambalache will close out the season on August 9 with nueva salsa and rhumba. Cambalache is sponsored by Rumba Northwest and Café Rumba.
