Photography. Chickens? These three seemingly disparate themes intersect in acclaimed fashion photographer Jean Pagliuso’s upcoming show at the Florida Museum of Photographic Arts. Following a 30-year career as a portrait photographer working for such publications as Vogue, Times, Newsweek, Time and Rolling Stone, Pagliuso decided to turn her lens on a less traditional subject: chickens. What began as a way to honor her father’s love of breeding show chickens has since become an extensive collection of poultry portraits. Pagliuso has taken close-up shots of over 20 different chicken breeds, posing them and focusing on the unique plumage and expressions of each. “I don’t see it as any different at all from photographing people. It’s exactly the same to me. I look for the same things. I look for form and the way the frame is filled,” Pagliuso said in a 2015 interview with Slate Magazine. The images are printed in black and white on nearly see-through paper. Pagliuso’s treatment of the birds, combined with the delicacy of the printing materials, create a dignified and surprisingly moving series of portraits. FMoPA Executive Director Zora Carrier, Ph.D. believes Pagliuso’s chickens resonate because she photographs them the same way she photographs fashion models. “In the literary arts, animals are often used as a metaphor for human behavior. I think part of the reason these photographs are so successful at capturing our attention is because they bring that same metaphorical quality to the visual arts,” said Carrier. In addition to poultry photography, Pagliuso’s exhibition at FMoPA also will feature a handful of photographs from her book, “In Plain Sight,” which explores endangered environments and places of ritual in Cambodia, India, New Mexico, Peru and Turkey. The exhibition, titled Poultry, Raptors, Places of Ritual, will open January 26 at FMoPA and run through March 16. Pagliuso will talk about her process in an artist lecture hosted at the museum on February 9 at 6 p.m. The lecture is free for members. Regular museum admission fees apply for not-yet members. Jobsite Theater to Present The Tempest, Jan. 19 – Feb. 18, in the Shimberg PlayhouseRegularly priced tickets are $29.50

Jobsite Theater, resident theater company of the Straz Center, continues their beloved tradition of offering exciting, dynamic,audience-centric productions of Shakespeare with The Tempest, playing Jan. 19 – Feb. 18, 2018 in the Shimberg Playhouse.

On a distant island a woman waits. Robbed of her position, power, and wealth her enemies have left her in isolation. But thisis no ordinary woman, nor an ordinary island. She is a magician, able to control the very elements and bend nature to her will. When the vessel carrying those who wronged her appears in the distance, she creates a vast magical storm to bring them to her– then they awake finding themselves in a place where nothing is as it seems.

Jobsite is thrilled to continue their commitment to making the Bard accessible to regional audiences with this delightfulfantasy. This production reimagines the character of Prospero as a woman, played by Jobsite ensemble veteran Roxanne Fay.Roxanne has previously been seen in Jobsite’s humble home as Touchstone in As You Like It, Feste in Twelfth Night, and Beatricein Much Ado About Nothing as well as Madame in their Best of the Bay Award winning production of The Maids. This productionalso stars Jobsite veterans Katrina Stevenson (Ariel), Giles Davies (Caliban), Emily Belvo (Miranda), Brian Shea (Antonio),Ward G, Smith (Sebastian), Derrick Phillips (Trinculo) and Alvin Jenkins (Alonso) while welcoming Nicole Maahs (Sebastian),DeQuan Mitchell (Ferdinand), Cornelio Aguilera (Francisco), India Davison (Adrian), and Michael Mahoney (Gonzalo) to theirmighty ensemble. The Tempest is directed by David M. Jenkins, who also provides set and sound design, with lights by Ryan E.Finzelber and costumes by Katrina Stevenson.

Why it’s for you: Jobsite believes Shakespeare is meant to be seen, not read, and the company prides their work on alwaysbeing audience-centric, accessible, and exciting. The themes of greed and ambition, revenge and retribution are timeless, and sois the idea that we must do what society tells us, for better or worse, lest we endure the consequences. This production is sure todelight audiences 8 to 80 with the way it embraces play, the imagination, and the magic of live performance.

The Tempest runs Jan. 19 – Feb. 18, 2018. Single tickets start at $29.50. A season pass for the full six-show Jobsite season isavailable for 20% off the price of single tickets with no added charges. If available, rush tickets for students, persons 65+,military/veterans and their dependents (Jobsite is a Blue Star Theatre), Theater Communications Group, and Theatre Tampa Baymembers are $15 off as of 30 minutes to curtain with cash and ID at the Straz Box Office window. Special preview performancesare Jan. 17-18 with all seats priced at $15.

When the Water Rises: Recent Paintings by Julie HeffernanExhibit Coming to Scarfone/Hartley Gallery

The University of Tampa’s Scarfone/Hartley Gallery will present When the Water Rises: Recent Paintings by Julie Heffernan from January 24–March 3, 2018.There will be a gallery talk with Heffernan on Wednesday, January 24, at 6 p.m., and a reception and curatorial tour with Francesca Bacci, UT associate professorof art, on Friday, January 26, from 7 - 9 p.m.

Heffernan’s recent paintings create alternative habitats in response to environmental disaster and planetary excess. With rising waters, she imagines worlds intrees or on rafts in which undulating mattresses, tree boughs and road signs guide the journey. Construction cones interrupt the landscape signaling places to stop, enter tiny interior worlds and reflect on the human condition — its feckless activity, violence, failure and redemption.

Heffernan tends these alternative environments to safeguard bounties we cannot live without. In other moments, she names names and points fingers to thosepeople and activities implicated in recent calamities of both the physical and socio-political environment.

Intricately wrought, Heffernan’s painting evoke the fantastical allegory of Hieronymus Bosch and the sublime of Thomas Cole and Albert Bierstadt.Heffernan received her MFA in painting from Yale and a BFA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She has received numerous grants, including a

National Endowment for the Arts grant, a New York Foundation for the Arts grant and a Fulbright Fellowship. Her works are in the collections of major museums, including the Brooklyn Museum of Art and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. She is represented by P.P.O.W. in New York and Catharine Clark in San Francisco.Heffernan is a professor of fine arts at Montclair State University.

“When the Water Rises” is a collaboration between the Louisiana State University (LSU) College of Art + Design and the LSU Museum of Art. A fully illustratedcatalogue, with essays by curator Courtney Taylor, art critic and writer Eleanor Heartney and LSU professor of art Kelli Scott Kelley will be available for purchase. All proceeds will go to the Friends of the Gallery fund, which supports events, educational programs and exhibitions at the Scarfone/Hartley Gallery.
