A Morning at MiddleSchool: Fifth GradersPreview Sixth Grade atCorbett Prep

Fifth graders had an opportu-nity to immerse themselves in sixth-grade life during a morning atMiddle School, crossing OrangeGrove Drive to meet their futureteachers and see for themselves whatawaits them in Corbett Prep class-rooms next year.

Every year, Corbett PreparatorySchool of IDS invites its current fifthgraders to preview Middle School lifeand its academics by having themspend time in the core classes in whichthey will enroll the following year. It isan interactive experience designed toassist in the transition from the East tothe West Side of campus.

Offered each fall, the orientationhelps students learn about the manyoptions available in Middle Schooland answers questions about what toexpect. Parents attend their own ori-entation separately as guests at anopen house.

Middle School teachers plannedmini-lessons for the student groups, appealing to multiple learning styleswith brain-based activities.

Everyone donned goggles in sci-ence for an investigation lab where

they tested the acidity of mystery liq-uids. In English, teacher Kat Quinguided students through new vocab-ulary words so they could “stun, amaze and occasionally, stupefy”their audiences. Social Studies guestsjourneyed to Egypt and became ar-

chaeologists trying to rebuild the an-cient White Chapel. The math teamused clocks to introduce modulararithmetic, a concept students willbuild upon in the future with morecomplicated applications.

The trip to Middle School also

gave fifth graders a chance to hear di-rectly from students who had been intheir shoes.

Sixth graders wrote letterspacked with words of wisdom, an-swering many of the questions theyhad when they started MiddleSchool. They also shared electivesthey love, what it’s like to have alocker, how they manage their timeand the ways they stay organized.

“It is awesome being a student inMiddle School at Corbett Prep, withall of the helpful teachers and friends,”one sixth-grade girl wrote. “They willensure you have a great year.”

Corbett Prep’s Middle Schoolbalances a rigorous academic environ-ment with a caring learning commu-nity. Highly trained teachers provide astrong support network and continuethe personalized learning experiencethat begins with PreK3, preparing stu-dents to soar in whatever high schoolthey choose.

The sixth-grade preview ener-gized many of the students about theupcoming year.

“I can’t wait for all the classes I’mgoing to take,” Kyle Fanelli said.

For more information, visitwww.corbettprep.com or contactthe Admissions Office at (813)961-3087.

Living in Tampa Bay, chancesare you have heard of the Dr. Lan-don, and it’s not just because of hisextraordinary work as a plastic sur-geon. I’m sure it is also, in part, dueto his and Cheryl’s continuous dedi-cation and support to helping thosein need, both locally and throughoutthe World. Through their LandonOutreach Foundation, the Landonshave helped thousands upon thou-sands of underprivileged individualsand families, whether it be from theirlocal fundraisers and events, or theiryearly mission trips.

The Landons recently sponsoredtwo events this past month, one tobenefit the Children’s Cancer Centerof Tampa and the other, which bene-fitted the Salvation Army DomesticViolence Shelter. Cheryl is also cur-rently working on giving toys to some

of the kids in the Pasco CountySchool System that are in need. “Ourgoal is help those who are less fortu-nate than us,” says Cheryl. “It doesn’tmatter who it is, we try to help every-one we can.”

In addition to their fundraisingevents, every time that someonebooks a surgery, the deposit for thesurgery, as well as the consultationfee, goes towards the Landon Out-reach Foundation. This benefits boththe patients and the community, aspatients can use this $295, whichthey would’ve had to pay anyways, asa tax deduction, and the money goestowards helping out underprivilegedin the community.

For the past several years, theLandons, through their Landon Out-reach Foundation, have traveled toHaiti to provide much needed medicalcare to children and families in need.Brining their own medical supplies, as

A new year is a beautiful gift, ablank slate, a whole new beginning! It’s no wonder that people all overthe world jump at the fact to cele-brate and make the next year evenbetter by pledging to make changes.New Year’s resolutions aren’t a mod-ern phenomenon, in fact, the Baby-lonians made promises at thebeginning of each year to repay theirdebts and return anything that they’dborrowed the year before and hadforgotten to return! What’s more, the ancient Romans, well, theystarted each year by making promisesto their god, Janus, whose name ismemorialized in time. You may knowJanus as January. So, this January, what promises do you intend tomake? Perhaps you’re one of the mil-lions of people who pledge to loseweight, make more money, quit abad habit or try something new.

Mark Twain wrote, “Habit ishabit, and not to be flung out of thewindow by any man, but coaxed

down the stairs a step at a time.”The same is true if you’re trying tostart a new habit, rather than elimi-nating an old one! So whether you’retrying to make or break a habit, hereare some helpful hints!

Set Small, Attainable Goals!First of all, resolutions are gener-

ally lofty goals. It’s not like yourNew Year’s resolution is to sit aroundand watch TV in your underwear, right? Of course not! So, whenyou’re making a big pledge, or apromise to change, it’s going to takesome effort, and some time! Be pa-tient, because your resolutions aren’tgoing to be attained by January

15th! If you’re serious about a reso-lution this year, give yourself a rea-sonable timeframe in which tocomplete it! Instead of pledging tolose a huge amount of weight, setsmaller goals, with smaller rewards! For example, instead of saying, “If Ilose 50 pounds, I’ll book a trip to Ja-maica.” Say, “If I lose 10 pounds, I’lltreat myself to a girl’s night out or around of golf!” People who setsmaller, short-term goals are morelikely to achieve their larger goaldown the road.

Be Patient & Don’tGive Up!

When you were little, and youdidn’t know how to do a lot of stuffyet, people always said, “Don’t giveup, keep practicing!” As adults, manyof us seem to have forgotten this. Wetend to give up too quickly, and weare far too hard on ourselves in theprocess. Believe in yourself, and mostof all, try to hold on to the reasonand the feeling that inspired you tomake this resolution in the first place!

Want to Keep Your New Year’s Resolution? Keep it Simple!

Carrollwood Area Neighborhood News & Lifestyles JANUARY 2015 21For Ad Info 813-928-6124 • NNLFlorida.com

So, if you’ve promised to give upsmoking and you relapse, put themdown, start fresh and give yourself asecond chance! Every minute thatyou’re not smoking you’re becominghealthier. Take it from someone whonever wanted to quit, had no inten-tion of doing so, and thought Iwouldn’t feel any different if I actu-ally did. It’s been four years since Iquit smoking, and trust me, if I cando it, you can do it! Some people be-lieve that it takes just three weeks tomake or break a habit, but I’ll tellyou what works 100 percent of thetime: Believing in yourself and nevergiving up!

Focus on One Habitat a Time!

Are you an overachiever? Youmay be if you are one of those whosay, “This year, I’m going to lose 30pounds, start my book and learn howto crochet!” Wow, that’s a lot ofgoals with a lot of smaller goals hid-den inside! You can’t make a scarfuntil you know which yarn to buy,and that’s a goal in itself! So, this isone time of the year where it doesn’tpay to be an overachiever. Pick onegoal that really means something to

you and work on it. Also, it helps topractice or refrain as often as your in-dividual goal requires.

Get Help or Grab a Buddy! If your goal is to run a 5k when

you’ve never made it around theblock before without huffing andpuffing, you might need a little help;otherwise you’re going to be

tempted to quit! If you really want todo it, it’d be really helpful to talk tosomeone who enjoys doing what youare learning to do, because they cangive you some helpful tips. There areall kinds of resources online, aroundtown and most likely in your ownnetwork of friends. So, ask around!Make your resolution known, andyou might make some new friends in

the process! If you’re trying to break a habit,

having a buddy or a friend on yourside is instrumental. Sometimes youmay need someone that you can justcall when you’re feeling low, some-one who knows your struggle andcan talk you through it. Whetheryou’re nursing a broken heart or try-ing to quit a more serious problem, having someone that you can dependon, who will not enable, you butstrengthen you, is key.

Don’t Compare Yourselfto Others!

Listen, we all know that “oneperson” who lost a ton of weight“without even trying” or quit smok-ing “cold turkey.” Don’t get caughtup in comparison! You are you, yourgoals are as unique as you are, andcomparison only makes people loseconfidence, so keep focused, andavoid falling into this tricky trap!

Whatever your New Year’s reso-lutions are, all of us at NeighborhoodNews & Lifestyles hope that 2015 isfilled with blessings and success! Wehope these little tips will help yourdreams become a reality!

When your child is labeled withADD or ADHD, it is beyond frus-trating! Brain Balance Center ofTampa in Oldsmar wants parents toknow that there is hope. ADHD isone of the most common childhooddisorders and is characterized by de-velopmentally inappropriate levels ofinattention, hyperactivity, and impul-sive behavior, and the symptoms canmake it very difficult for a child tosucceed in school.

Many parents are finding successwith the programs at Brain BalanceAchievement Centers for ADHD andmuch more. Brain Balance useproven strategies to help children ex-ercise their brains. Brain Balancehelps children who have ADD,ADHD, Dyslexia, Tourette’s, As-perger’s Syndrome, Autism SpectrumDisorder, Learning Disabilities orProcessing Disorders, to work be-yond those challenges and becomemore successful socially, developmen-tally and cognitively.

Brain Balance Achievement Cen-

ter of Tampa, located in Oldsmar, takes a whole-child approach that ispersonalized and focused on findingcauses, rather than masking symp-toms. There are more than 50 BrainBalance Achievement Centers in thenation, where children are given anindividualized program that includesnutrition, sensory motor coachingand academic skill improvement.

Employing Florida CertifiedTeachers who have impressive re-

sumes in the fields of Behavioral Sci-ences and Exceptional Education,Brain Balance takes a “brain-based,not drug-based” approach. BrainBalance is an education facility, not amedical facility, and they make it alot of fun for kids to come, play, grow and change!

Brain Balance Program for ADHDThe Brain Balance Program® is

the most comprehensive approach

to overcoming the symptoms ofchildhood learning and develop-mental issues like ADHD. It offers acutting-edge, integrated approachthat combines three core modalitiesinto one program, integrating physi-cal, sensory motor, and cognitiveexercises with nutritional guidanceto effectively address the root causeof these issues. Brain Balance’sunique, whole-child approach hashelped thousands of kids reach theirphysical, social/behavioral, and aca-demic potential.

The Brain Balance programcomes directly from Dr. Robert J.Melillo’s research on neurobehavioraldisorders. Dr. Melillo, a world-renowned neurologist, professor andauthor, strongly believes that condi-tions such as ADD, ADHD,Tourette’s, Autism spectrum disor-ders and processing disorders, whichwere previously thought to be unre-lated, are in fact related, and can begrouped into what is called “Func-tional Disconnection Syndrome.” In

his book, “Disconnected Kids,” Dr.Melillo explains that if you were totake a child with any of these condi-tions and give them an MRI scan, orany other number of medical tests, there would be nothing to find.Their brain is not damaged. These is-sues are all connection issues, and re-search has proven that the lefthemisphere of the brain and the righthemisphere of the brain have distinctresponsibilities, abilities and func-tions. Research has found that whenone-half of the brain has a deficiency,it leads to these connectivity issues,

which can result in a “disconnect”between a child and their ability tolearn, communicate and succeed. The goal is to challenge the hemi-sphere of the brain that is showing adeficiency, and to stimulate it so thatit will learn to function.

patients come here because they knowthey can get an honest opinion and re-ally good customer service; they comehere to get something done and get itdone well!”

Dr. Landon says, “Landon PlasticSurgery is very comprehensive and it isimportant for people to know, thateverything we do, we do a lot of; wedo procedures multiple times a weekin every category. We handle about700 cases a year.”

Recently joining the Landonteam is Dr. Gloria Thomas, a very wellestablished female plastic surgeon.Previously owning a private practicefor years, Dr. Thomas has over 20years or experience and brings withher a multitude of knowledge and alengthy list of happy patients. “She is anice edition to the office because thereis a subset of patients that would pre-fer a female physician, so now we offerthat as well to better serve the needsof our patients,” says Dr. Landon.

I can tell you, from my own per-sonal experience, that Dr. Landon andhis staff truly are amazing. From dayone, his staff went above and beyondto provide me with a personalized ex-

perience and did a great job of makingme feel comfortable and relaxed. From my first consultation, where thestaff was very thorough and actuallylistened to what I had to say, to thenight of the operation where Dr. Lan-don called me at home to see how Iwas doing, to the months followingthe operation, where Dr. Landon andhis staff did an excellent job makingsure everything progressed and healedright, Landon Plastic Surgery reallyhas set the bar with how patientsshould be treated.

“We do take care of our patientsand I do think we offer that extra levelof service,” says Cheryl. “I almostthink we nurture patients. We have anamazing, amazing staff. They are alltruly wonderful. We really care aboutour patients and our patients knowthat. They almost feel part a part ofthe family.”

World-Class Technology Using the newest, most innova-

tive technology, Dr. Landon’s 3Dbreast imaging machine allows pa-tients to see exactly what their im-plants are going to look like before thesurgery, and gives them the opportu-nity to “try out” different sizes to seewhat will look best on their body andwhat size will give them the desired

outcome that they hope toachieve.

Dr. Landon says, “Weoffer patients the ability totake a virtual road trip withdifferent size implants to seehow the implants are going tolook on their body. This hasreally done a great job of alle-viating the anxiety.”

The newest in patient-centered advancements, Lan-don Plastic Surgery hasrecently introduced TouchMD to their practice. Interac-tive software for patient edu-cation, Touch MD, as like the3D breast-imaging machine, gives patients the opportunityto experience the closestthing they can to having sur-gery, before the actual sur-gery. By uploading a pictureof the patient’s target area tothe software, Dr. Landon isable to show his patientswhere the incisions are goingto be made, as well as theprojected outcome as to whatthat area will look like post-surgery.

“This gives patients asense of familiarity, making them feelcomfortable about their decision,”

says Dr. Landon. “It is a great teach-ing tool, and my patients end up leav-ing with a solid education of what we

When asked his favorite partabout what he does, Dr. Landon

replied, “being able to take bodyimages that people find distaste-ful or aging and give them a pos-itive body image change. Peoplehave a wide range of expectationsand if you are really going to besuccessful you have to listen toyour patients and deliver whatthey want. I think that is what re-ally sets up apart.
