Allpro uses a CADprogram that actually shows you“after” pictures of your future land-scape project.

Pete Spiridis, owner and operatorof Allpro Tree and Landscaping is acertified arborist. Pete believes thatquality performance comes with work-ing safe and smart, while utilizing theright tools for each individual job. In

order to keep up with today’s industrystandards, Pete sends all team membersat Allpro to regular safety and tech-nique courses at the International Soci-ety of Arboriculture. Pete’sexpectations for himself and his teamare set with high standards and hestrives for excellence in his work.

“I started my business as a youngkid right out of high school in 1997. Itook over my dad’s lawn service andran that for a number of years,” saysPete. “I thought I would like to go ina different direction, so I gave mas-sage therapy a shot, but as I wouldwatch maintenance crews at workoutside my air-conditioned unit, I re-alized that I was kidding myself andmy true passion was in outside,hands-on work. I shut down my mas-sage business and purchased equip-ment the next day. I started mowinglawns again but also added trees andlandscaping to my service and wasvery successful, maintaining over 400weekly clients.”

As Pete’s business grew, he recog-nized early on that he wanted to do

more for himself and his clients. “Iwasn’t happy because I stand for some-thing and I wasn’t reaching my full po-tential. My quality of life wasn’t what itshould be and I let my stress take over, which in turn affected my personal lifeas a husband and my faith,” says Pete.“I knew that change was in order be-cause God had bigger plans for me. In2007, I opened up Allpro Tree andLandscaping to provide better, qualityassured services. My wife and I cameup with this name, Allpro, because tous it means that at we are who we saywe are – All professionals, no more daylaborers. You must know your area ofexpertise. We only focus on trees andlandscaping, which sets us apart fromothers. I hold myself accountable togive true and honest meaning behindthe name Allpro.”

Pete adds, “I believe that in orderto be the best, you need to gain asmuch knowledge in your field as possi-ble. So in 2011, I earned the title Cer-tified Arborist and with that title Imaintain CEUs and also take the ad-vantage of sending my team members

to classes so they can be the best atwhat they do. I am only as good as myteam, so I make sure they are the best.”

Team members at Allpro Treeand Landscaping are always in recog-nizable uniforms, so you can knowexactly who is working on the job!Fully licensed and insured, AllproTree and Landscaping is dedicated toproviding clients with the best servicepossible in a way that doesn’t harmyou, your yard or the trees they areworking with. Pete takes every stepto ensure that he and his team are theprofessionals who do it all and do itthe best when it comes to tree andlandscaping services.

When hiring a tree and landscap-ing service, working with a certifiedarborist is the smart way to go. Im-properly pruned trees are at risk fordisease, which can lead to them hav-ing to be removed. Trees and a beau-tifully landscaped yard add value toyour home and business. We are all solucky to live in tropical Florida, wherewe can enjoy plants and lush treesyear round. Owner Jean-Louis Miranda, known as Sensei Miranda at the acad-emy, started martial arts training whenhe was seven, earning his first blackbelt in Shodokhan at age 18. “Grow-ing up in the rough parts of Mar-seilles,” he noted that it wasimperative to learn to control youremotions. Since he was a kid, hebeamed, “I always wanted to open amartial arts school.” He came to theStates and earned yet another blackbelt in Tae Kwon Do, then right herein Carrollwood, fifteen years ago, Sen-sei Miranda opened one of the firstafter school Karate instruction centersin Tampa. Originally housed in a1500sq. ft. store front in the CascadesShopping Center, Carrollwood BlackBelt Academy’s reputation grew pro-foundly by word of mouth, at whichpoint they moved to their current7000 sq. ft. standalone building at4125 Gunn Highway. Then snacks are made available in thecafeteria and the kids can turn their at-tention to video games or arts andcrafts while waiting for their particularkarate class to begin. Note that uni-forms (available on premises for $35)are required for this activity.

For more information pleasevisit www.lenlioftampa.org. Here isone of their success stories:

Alcinor AurelienAlone in his home, suddenly the

ground began to ferociously shake, the sound thunderous, and his homebegan falling in on him. It was Janu-ary 12th 2010 and a 7.0 earthquakewas shaking Haiti unlike anythingbefore. As the quake subsided, Alci-nor found he was buried in concretedebris, and began trying to pull him-self out. The more he tried he real-ized that his left leg below the kneewas completely crushed under theconcrete, and he could not get out.

After many hours, rescuers foundhim. Unfortunately, they also couldnot remove the concrete from atophis leg. His leg had to be removedbelow the knee by guillotine amputa-tion on site, and he was transferredto a makeshift hospital to be stabi-lized. It was there he learned that hismother and his young daughter didnot survive the quake; the quakeclaimed 230,000 lives and left at least1.5 million people homeless.

After two weeks, he was airliftedto Tampa General Hospital wheresurgeons performed a clean amputa-tion due to extreme infection, andalso began treating his acute bloodloss, anemia, malnutrition, and liverdamage. He barely survived; hisbacterial infection was so severe. After two months, he was stableenough to be transferred to a rehabfacility. He was fitted with a simpleprosthesis, what many have called a“peg leg”. He worked hard on his

rehabilitation and Catholic Charitieshelped him to obtain temporaryhousing. He found out about Voca-tional Rehabilitation (VR) thoughanother Haitian friend who was alsobeing helped by Catholic Charitiesand applied in July of 2012 – it hadtaken two years to become wellenough to attempt to work.

He was assigned to FrancesBranch, Sr. VR Counselor at thedowntown Tampa office. She helpedhim to obtain a lifelike prosthesis, and also sent him to an eye surgeonfor removal of an object lodged inhis eye from the earthquake, whichhad not been detected. She also pro-vided him with eyeglasses after a vi-sion test showed extreme myopia.During this time she employed theuse of a Creole Interpreter as Alcinorhad very limited English skills. Ms.Branch referred Alcinor to theCARIBE Refugee Program where hebegan ESL classes. (His first school-

ing, as he had never attended schoolin Haiti.) It took several months ofadjustments to the prosthesis, stabi-lizing his health, and getting hiswork visas in order before he was re-ferred to Linda Lennox, owner of“Lenli of Tampa, Inc.” for Sup-ported Employment Services. Alci-nor wanted to work so badly. It washis one dream.

Linda networked into the busi-ness community and found a job forhim very quickly, at Mister Car Wash. She also helped him get a FloridaI.D. and helped him get an exten-sion on his visa. The General Man-ager of the business became awonderful mentor to Alcinor, teach-ing him how to do his job and alsohelping him with his English. (Alci-nor has also taught his supervisorCreole). He can now carry on a con-versation in English. Although it isbroken English, he has made greatstrides in his almost two years with

VR. He also now has his own apart-ment. Linda worked very hard tomake sure nothing went wrong withAlcinor’s job placement and adjust-ments into a new community andwork environment.

His supervisor, Jonye has be-come a natural support and cannotsay enough good things about Alci-

nor. He callshim his bestworker andsays that he isthe first onethere everyday and thelast one toleave. “Alci-nor has nevercomplained, always doesan outstand-ing job, andnever misseswork,” saysJonye. Alci-nor says thathe loves hisjob, and he isvery proud tohave a fulltime job; his

first real job ever.Alcinor says he cannot thank the

United States and Vocational Reha-bilitation enough. He is overwhelm-ingly thankful for all that has beendone for him. With his never-endingpositive nature and his drive to sur-vive, and to succeed in life, his hastruly been a success story.

Alcinol Aurelien (M) has a never-ending positive nature andwith his drive to survive and excel in life, he has truly

become a symbol of success!

Kindergarten CultivatesInquiry with WildlifeResearch Projects

They spent weeks conducting re-search to seek answers to questionsthey had formed and then organizedtheir findings on paper and displayboards. Once completed, they stoodbefore their classmates to present allthey had uncovered on their topics, often with visual or multimedia aids, calling on peers during question-and-answer sessions.

It may sound like a college class, but this is kindergarten at CorbettPreparatory School of IDS.

Kindergarten students recentlycompleted projects on wildlife fortheir unit “Sharing the Planet: LivingTogether in Harmony.” The processprompted students to think like re-searchers and learn to ask engaging

questions. Corbett Prep teachers Ash-ley Davis, Holly Ralph and Marla Vil-dostegui focused on creating wonderin the classrooms, using “I wonder”questions to help students beginthinking about how questions areasked. They encouraged inquirythroughout students’ research so theycould uncover meaning and becomeexperts on the animals they studied.

Teachers laid the groundwork inthe classroom, building backgroundknowledge of wildlife and the sevencontinents while emphasizing creativ-ity and critical thinking.

Students also worked independ-ently, in pairs and with families. Incomputer class, they teamed up withfifth-grade partners who helped themconduct research on safe websites andfill out their “animal fact sheet” withinformation about the animal’s size, color, classification and more.

The cooperation assisted theyounger students but benefited olderones as well. Fifth-grader TreyHodges said he enjoyed working with5-year-old Jackson on his rattlesnakeresearch: “It was really fun becausethey like to try it on their own beforethey want you to step in, and thenyou can coach them better.”

At home, families worked together

to synthesize the information and helpthem with visual presentations.

Many of the students used card-board displays to showcase their re-search, including photographs withtheir facts, which they pointed outduring oral presentations to theirclass. Anna asked a teacher to help herstretch a string 6 feet wide to illustratehow broad a moose’s antler was.

Christopherpassed around acurling snake-skin for his kingsnake presenta-tion. Tyler useda video excerptto allow hisclassmates tohear prairiedogs barking.

Studentstook turnsstanding to askquestions afterthe presenta-tions, wonder-ing aloud whatthe animals ate,how big the ba-bies were andwhether theywere dangerous

or endangered. The final part of theassignment encouraged students toreflect on what they had done andcomplete self assessments.

The kindergarten research projectallowed students to uncover and sharefascinating facts about animals, butthe process they learned of askingquestions and assembling researchpromises to turn them into lifelong

learners. The kindergarten teachershope the students develop into inquir-ers who continue to ask “I wonder”and are fascinated by the worldaround them.

use socially-conscious beans from theoutset, working with Thrive Farmers,an African and Central AmericanFarming Cooperative that ensures in-dividual farmers get paid a fair wage. The beans are hand-picked, then man-ually cleaned and dried. Stop for a

minute and consider that every onepound of coffee is equivalent to theyield from one coffee bush. That issome intense manual labor we’re talk-ing about. Hattie’s pays above marketprice for the “right thing.” Brucenoted, “Being a little radical, we thinkthat is important.”

Stepping out back, l saw how thecoffee beans are delivered to Hattie’sby pallet from Thrive and thenbrought into the café to be roastedand blended. Jonathan Boore,Bruce’s son, and more notably, Hat-tie’s chief coffee bean roaster, has anose for the bean and understands thecomplex nature of the roastingprocess. You’ll see him load up abatch of green coffee beans into theroaster, then hook up his laptop to thisamazing machine so he can overseethe entire roasting process from a timeand temperature standpoint. As shewas savoring her coffee, long-timecustomer Kara Jolitz said, “I love thisplace. I am obsessed with their gour-met oatmeal and I buy their wholebean coffee – Papua New Guinea ismy “fav”.” The perfect name for Hat-tie’s first blend was “La Boda,” whichis Spanish for “The Wedding,” com-memorating the marriage of flavorsfrom their own roasted beans. “Dale

Mabry Decaf” is another blend you’llwant to try. They use a water-processed decaffeination technique ona Mexican bean about which Brucesays, “It’s almost impossible to tastethat it’s a decaf.”

Let’s talk about other offeringsthat have recently taken flight. Hat-tie’s now offers curb-side service, where you just phone in your orderand at a predetermined time, they’llhave someone run out to your carwith your order with an IPad in handto complete the transaction right then

crew that include a salad, sandwich, chips and a cookie. Don’t forget thatHattie’s brews its own fresh iced tea.You can even get it by the gallon.

How else has this bustling enter-prise expanded its offerings? A newlyrediscovered interest in Hattie’s fresh-squeezed orange juice is currently un-derway. They offer it by the glassin-house and sell it by the gallon foryou to take home and enjoy. Cold-brewed coffee has become very popu-lar as well. Bruce quipped that thecoffee concentrate that they create is3-4 times stronger than regular coffeewithout the bitter taste from the cof-

fee oils and acid. They use that cold-brewed coffee concentrate as the basisfor their trademarked “Hattie’s Bang-A-Rang”, a delectable standalone nat-ural energy drink also containing sugarand milk. It’s a “jet pack in a glass”and virtual rocket fuel for folks whoare lifting weights, exercising or justneeding a sustained energy boost.
