Sally: People should only eat organic foodbecause it is always better for their healthand for the environment.

George: So are you saying that all peopleshould only eat organic food because its

better for their health and for theenvironment?Sally: Yes.George: Even people who cannot afford

organic food should only eat organic foodbecause it is better to starve in adeveloping country than to eat non-organic food.

Sally. No, thats not what I am saying. Letme try again. People in the United Stateswho can afford organic food should onlyeat organic food because it is better for

their health and for the environment.George: Okay, so what youre saying is thatif people can afford to eat organic food, they should only eat organic food

because it is always healthier and betterfor the environment, even if it takes lotsof fossil fuels to transport it to yoursupermarket.

  • 8/13/2019 Eng 102SC Rogerian

    13/18

Sally: No, thats not what I meant. What Iwas trying to say was that if you canafford it, organic food produced locallyin the US is better for your health and the

environment than non-organic food.George: So it sounds to me like what youare claiming is essentially that if theycan afford it, Americans should buy

locally grown organic food because itsbetter for their health and for theenvironment.

Sally: Yes, that is what Im claiming.

Tim: So if I understand you correctly, you

are telling me that you are unhappybecause when your husband drinks, hekicks the dog, and you dont like it whenhe kicks the dog.

Donna: No, what Im saying is that myhusband drinks too much and when hedoes, he likes to kick the dog, whichmakes me feel sad.

  • 8/13/2019 Eng 102SC Rogerian

    15/18

Tim: Okay, so it sounds to me like youare saying your husband drinks toomuch, and this over-consumptionmakes you sad because when hesdrunk, he kicks your dog.

Donna: Yes. I feel sad when my husbandkicks the dog. My husbands drinking

is probably the root of the problem.
