The European energy landscape is transforming. Because of massive investments required on the energy sector, the change will take several decades. We must ensure that Vaasa energy cluster will keep up with change and retain its lead. This year the European commis-sion will propose legislation for

redesigning European energy markets to better integrate re-newables to the markets, review directives on energy efficiency and energy performance of buildings and reform the current renewable energy directive.

We are currently working on new legislation on energy efficiency labelling of products

and adjusting the emission trading system. We’re also aiming for energy consumers empowerment. Vaasa region can proactively influence the outcome of these legislative proposals. Together we can avoid legal traps and grasp the technological opportunities.

The agreement is a strong signal to legislators, investors and busi-ness all over the world. It gives the framework for measures for tackling the climate change and for Finnish import of advanced energy technology.

For the Vaasa region, this is a fantastic opportunity for further growth and development. On behalf of the city, we actively develop new innovation plat-forms in collaboration with the enterprises and universities. Our unique energy education strat-egy, for example, has received

recognition at the highest EU level. We shall do everything in our power to see that we can offer the best possible precon-ditions for energy businesses. I wish you all a fabulous Energy Week and warmly welcome you to Vaasa!

MIAPETRA KUMPULA-NATRIMEMBER OF EUROPEAN

PARLIAMENT MEP

JOAKIM STRANDMEMBER OF PARLIAMENT, CHAIRMAN OF VAASA CITY

COUNCIL

LEADING THE WAY IN A CHANGING CLIMATE

THE NORDIC ENERGY CAPITAL VAASA IS FILLED WITH EXCELLENT OPPORTUNITIES

The story of Vaasa is a European success story. Our cluster of energy industries has been built with extraordinary vision, commitment and cooperation between the regional actors. We have created a solid base for both technologies and skills, and finalised this with creative marketing.

The Climate Change Conference in Paris reached a legally binding, widely acceptable agreement. Even though its details include a number of parts that remain open to interpretation, we can say that the agreement contains a political direction for future development of the global climate policy and the energy markets.

MERJA KYLLÖNENMEP, European ParliamentThe shift towards more sustainable energy system and creating of well-functioning energy union are among the most topical and important issues in

Europe. It is clear that we need new energy solutions for industry, housing and transport.

RASMUS VALANKOManager, World Business Council for Sustainable DevelopmentAfter COP21 it is clearer than ever that we need to limit global cumulative emissions of carbon to one

trillion tonnes. How long can the era of natural gas last and in which end-uses before we transition to other energy vectors?

MATHIAS JANSSONGeneral Manager, (Innovation & Product Support, Marine Solutions,Gas Solutions, Fuel Gas Handling,) Wärtsilä Finland OyAn early set strategy to focus on gas technology has

enabled Wärtsilä to be a frontrunner in gas related technologies to comply to the the newly established and upcoming environmental regulations and answer the need of our customers.

TOMMY MATTILADirector, Sales and Marketing, SkangasThe Small Scale LNG concept is an effective solution for making natural gas available to energy users not connected to pipeline networks and also

for Marine and Traffic markets. The concept increases the market for natural gas by distributing LNG from either a LNG plant, LNG import terminal or directly from a LNG carrier using a combination of both sea and land based transport directly to the end-user. The concept also connects the Global LNG market to the Nordic countries.

DAVID BAXTERSenior Scientist Sustainable Transport, European Commission, JRC&IEA Bioenergy, Leader of Task 37The biogas sector has diversified over the last decade from mainly heat and power to biom-

ethane production and it continues to adapt to changing market opportunities. The presentation will cover a range of applications for biogas, including flexible production and storage for electricity grid balancing, upgrading to vehicle fuel, and grid injection and will consider impacts on environmental sustainability.

LASSE POHJALASenior Business Advisor, Vaasa Region Development Company VASEKLasse Pohjala, MSc in Mechanical Technology, represents the Vaasa Region Development Company. Lasse focuses on direct foreign investments to the Vaasa region, co-operating closely with the local export-oriented companies. Lasse’s previous experience includes working at Bodycote as a plant manager and Fundia as a metallurgist.

HERKKO PLITDeputy Director General, Ministry of Employment and the Economy, Energy DepartmentIn the recent years the gas consumption has been decreasing constantly in Finland. Global energy

issues also influence the Finnish gas market. The presentation will describe the future of the Finnish gas market and the regulation.

NIKO RISTIKANKAREPartner & CEO, WEGALNG market has gradually started to develop in Finland during a last couple of years. Terminal network requires a sustainable demand from mar-

itime and industry sector. LNG enables a new low emission solution for various end user sectors. Vaasa region provides a prominent ground for a small scale LNG-terminal due its versatile industries and growing maritime sector.

SEPPO NIEMIProfessor, University of VaasaThe energy research activities are about to take an international leap with the building of a new research and product development laboratory, the

Vaasa Energy Business Innovation Centre (VEBIC). The VEBIC is the first step towards a large science park for the energy technology field in Vaasa.

JOHAN SAARELADevelopment Engineer, Ab Stormossen OyLocal biogas production will play a major role in future’s sustainable energy system. Not only is it a local energy source, but also a waste solver and

nutrient recycler, creating a circular economy.

KIM WIKSTRÖMProfessor, Åbo Akademi UniversityDifferent global cases in energy and transportation are presented where gas is enabling a new type of industrial logic. We’ll also get a glimpse on how

the actual change process takes place – both on an ecosystem and business model level – and particularly how it could be financed.

It is important to ensure that our new buildings are energy efficient, but the real challenge lies within the already built building stock.

Energy & Buildings Seminar

PROGRAMME - 1ST FLOOR

Friday March 18, 09.00-14.00Vaasa City Hall (Senaatinkatu 1)

The current building stock accounts for approximately 40% of the primary energy demand today. Renovation can cut this energy usage by as much as 80%, which would save up to 30% of the overall energy usage.

This year’s Energy and Buildings seminar focuses on the why and the how regarding energy efficient renovations, which probably is the most important issue regarding energy efficiency and climate control today.

The Energy & Buildings seminar is arranged by the Renovation Center, A nordic center for energy efficient renovations.

The Renovation Center consists of the following partners; Novia University of Applied Sciences, Vaasa Region Development Company, Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences, Tampere University of Technology (TUT), Umeå University/TFE, Umeå University/Education, SP Technical Research Institute of Sweden, County council of Västerbotten and Narvik University College.
